Ubud is not only just a nature paradise for grown adults. It is also an adventure playground for children who are ever ready to jump on any activity that gets their adrenaline running. These young inquisitive minds are longing for experiences that open their horizons and lead them to uncharted territories which, most importantly, let them have fun. For parents thinking about what to do in nature-abound Ubud, we believe the best way to admire earth’s jewels in the uplands of Bali is by foot.
Here are three easy trails in Ubud to bring your kids on for an adventurous family trip away from the urban sanctuary of Singapore!
A popular trail for beginners, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is one of the easiest trails in Ubud, making it perfect for kids and families who prefer a calming walk amid the tranquil greens. Along this nine-kilometre route which starts at the entrance of Warwick Ibah Villas, you can admire in awe of the breathtaking Balinese countryside while trekking through Campuhan Valley.
The dense tropical forests border the entire route, offering splendid views of the hillsides when observed from far. The soothing sounds of the Campuhan River rushing through both sides of the paved track make for a calm and meditative experience. When you finally make it to the highest point of the trek, you can capture the beautiful Ubud sunset with your kids and revel in nature’s beauty.
The trail also leads to an ancient temple, Pura Gunung Lebah, which is situated on a protruded rock at the junction of two rivers. Its magical settings exude the spiritual aura of the 8th-century multi-tiered shrine that come with elaborate ancient carvings that are hard to ignore. Even the view of the temple’s minarets will be inviting from afar, almost like a spell that calls upon trekkers to savour its charm.
While the Campuhan Ridge Walk may not offer the best views of Bali’s popular rice paddy fields, you will still find some to admire at the end of the trail.
The fields are located just outside Karsa Cafe where you can relish in the local cuisine with a countryside experience.
In Ubud, there is always a chance to teach the kids something unique. If you spot a rice farmer hard at work, let your kids witness what it takes to do the job of a local villager in Ubud and the effort he puts in to earn his bread and butter. You may also make your way to the village Bangkiam Sidem and meet with the locals there before completing the trail.
For a trek that is all about the famous rice paddies, a walk around the Tegalalang Rice Terrace will be Bali’s best. A 20-minute drive to the outskirts of Ubud will take you to the jaw-dropping photogenic rice paddies that fill the valleys at Tegalalang. The large expanse of the farm can be overwhelming at first sight but touring around this green paradise brings to the heart an unfound treasure of peace.
Enjoy the serenity, one that is dearly longed for in the hustle and bustle back on our sunny island.
While at it, keep your eyes peeled for the Ubud sunset behind the palm trees!
While the walk is child-friendly, kids are best advised to take it nice and slow when climbing the terraces. It is easy to trip over and an injury is not something you want to deal with on a trek like this.
It will also be an adventure for the kids to get up and close with the locals for whom these rice paddies are a significant part of their lives. Try on a rice field hat, throw some rice over your shoulder and snap a photo for memory - although you may need to pay to gain access to these items, it will be worth a shot!
If you have already explored the vicinity and are thinking of what more to do in this scenic enclave (after all you travelled out of Ubud for this), make your way up to the top of the terrace to the swing station. As the craze for the Bali swing has now spread across this tourist destination, you will be able to find the iconic swing at many nature spots all over Bali. This one at the Tegalalang Rice Terrace is no less enthralling.

We reckon your kids will love the Tegalalang swing here in Ubud. Surprise them at the end of the walk!
The Mount Batur hike, what is known to be the most popular activity to do in Ubud, is a two-hour trek up to an active volcano at the North-East region of Bali. The hike is typically a guided tour, often taking place in the wee hours of the morning to catch the sunrise. However, some local guides do cater to tourists who want to avoid the rush in the mornings and prefer a sunset trek instead.
After a 1.5-hour car ride from Ubud, you will reach Bali Sunrise Villas where the hike begins. The most adventurous trek from our list, the Mount Batur hike may not necessarily be convenient for all children. If you are planning to hike with young toddlers, be prepared to carry them for most of the journey as they could get tired easily. Otherwise, the hike is great for older children looking for an exciting feat. Do remember that you will need to descend back to the ground before dark falls, so perhaps a morning trek would be better for the kids.
While the trek can be done without a guide, it is best advised to book one. Not only does the guide pick you up from your hotel in Ubud, but he is also an experienced climber who will guide you and your kids throughout the trek. Bring lots of water and some food to munch along the way. The guides will typically initiate breaks to rest and hydrate in between so you will be in the safe hands of a local when you book a guide.
Once you have reached 5,633 feet above sea level at the peak of Mount Batur, you will see the puffy white clouds right ahead of you and from afar, a view of Mount Agung. Be sure to snap a picture with the majestic Gates of Heaven!
Embarking on a vacation is what you need to do for a much-needed respite from your busy work schedule in Singapore - whether to Ubud or elsewhere across the world, it is time to plan your holiday for 2020!
