What is Holi?

The traditional festival dates back centuries in Indian history. To put it simply, the Holi festival celebrates Spring's arrival after the long winter months. This is symbolic of the old-aged ethical discussion of good triumphing over evil. Despite the troubles and stress experienced in the dark times of the year, one can look forward to the beauty of the sun via hope and appreciation. For the Hindu people celebrating Holi, this comes at the beginning of Spring.
  • Holi 2023 falls on March 8th , according to the Phalguna calendar month. Throughout India, countless pyres will be lit to symbolize the burning of evil spirits and the embracing of new beginnings and better days.

Holi's History

The history behind this tradition is celebrated according to ancient Indian literature. One common story details a tyrant king, forcing his subjects to worship him as his power increased significantly. As the story goes, the king's son, Prahlada, was devoted to the iconic deity, Lord Vishnu. As expected, this did not go over well with his father, who tried to murder his son multiple times unsuccessfully. Consequently, he turned to his sister, Holika. Her reputation for being evil was amplified tremendously by her immunity to fire. Once employed, Holika decided the best way to get rid of Prahlada was through deception, and she invited him to sit on a pyre with her.

The fire was lit, and Holika fully expected the deed to be completed in the most vicious of ways. But to her surprise, Prahlada walked away from the pyre unharmed. It turns out his devotion to Lord Vishnu was more than enough to protect him in the realms of evil and murder. Holika, on the other hand, was burned to death despite her supposed immunity to fire. Her lasting legacy was providing the name of the traditional festival, a way of burning away the evil and entering a brighter chapter of one's life.

When is Holi 2023 & how is it celebrated?

Holi 2023 falls on March 8th, and Holika Dahan falls on March 7th. As the story above suggests, the instrumental way of celebrating Holi is with pyres. Countless pyres are ignited in many parts of India. Just like Holika was burned to death, lighting the large pyres symbolizes the burning of evil spirits. You'll find that most people would throw things like twigs and wood to further strengthen the various fires. The most vibrant aspect of the celebration is the colored powders that fill the sky. On the day of Holi, people fill the streets covered in red, green, and blue, tossing them in the air and onto each other.

Pyres are set up days before the festival officially begins. Celebrators collect a variety of flammable objects, and later, they gather in parks, community centers, and many other accessible open spaces. On every pyre, the Holika effigy is placed on top like a star on a Christmas tree, prepared to be burned, as the legend details. This is usually seen during sundown on the first day of the festival. Many gather around a pyre, and after prayers, they ignite it, symbolizing enduring and overcoming evil.

What are the color origins of Holi?

Of course, these colors have symbolic meanings in relation to the festival. Green represents the new beginnings to come after the burning of evil spirits. It is the color of nature and Spring, focusing on the manifestation of Hinduism through harvest and happiness.

Red maintains a traditional meaning revolving around love and fertility. At Indian weddings, women wear red as a sign of marriage and passion. During Holi, red reflects many concepts like strength, wealth, love, and more. Moreover, the color is an acknowledgment of the burning evil spirits.

Yellow is a sacred color in India and is often used to represent turmeric, an incredibly special spice in Indian culture. Turmeric has been used as medicine in India for centuries, developing a reliable reputation for its supposed healing powers. Moreover, during Holi 2023, yellow represents happiness, meditation, and peace.

Pink represents youthfulness and good health. With the vibrant and energetic color, celebrators hope to bring in more joy, playfulness, and fun to further enhance their livelihoods. Blue brings calmness, tranquility, determination, and bravery as a known color representation of the ocean and sky. One of India's most dominant colors, orange, represents sacrifice and courage. Perhaps more importantly, it symbolizes the energy center, which embodies strength and courage seen in the saffron robes and turbans that "men of God" (gurus, yogis, etc.) wear.

Lastly, purple represents a strong sense of wisdom and peace. In many traditions and cultures worldwide, purple has always symbolized royalty; and the same can be said in India. Moreover, it is also linked to wealth and power, combining the calmness of blue and the passion of red.

Celebrators often use water guns, balloons, and other interesting ways to fling these lively colors onto the streets and each other. Once the outdoor festivities are over, families gather and eat large, delicious meals together and even exchange special treats with neighbors and friends.

What is usually eaten?

The meals typically consist of Gujiya, a sweet dumpling filled with popular dairy products, such as khoya, and various dried fruits. But it wouldn't be traditional food without the amazing drinks to go with it.

In addition to the incredibly interesting stories of Holika and Prahlada, there are other legends that deserve mentioning. Specifically, Radha and Krishna are celebrated with significant love devoted to each of them. As the iconic story goes, Krishna acquired blue skin when he was a baby. This came as the result of drinking poisoned breast milk from a she-demon named Putana. Fearing his darker skin, he worried that he would not be able to woo the many other fair-skinned girls in the village. To avoid such things from happening, his mother suggested that he go and color the face of Radha, choosing any color he desired. His actions of applying colors directly connect with the reason why the Holi festival consists of countless celebrators playing with various colors. If you're celebrating Holi 2023, make sure you enjoy a nice cup of the traditional drink, thandai, made of delectable ingredients, including milk, fennel seeds, almonds, and more!

There are plenty of other amazing custom food options, including kanji vada, dahi bhalle, and namkeen. It's a fantastic feat of amazing food that will surely immerse you in the Holi festival.

Where does Holi usually happen?

If you want to experience Holi truly, we recommend visiting India or Nepal as your top picks. However, the beauty of the festival is now celebrated worldwide, and you are sure to find a local community to enjoy the festivities together.

It is not uncommon to see Holi celebrated in places outside of India or Nepal these days. In the US, large cities like New York, San Francisco, and Chicago are home to vast Indian populations, and Holi is celebrated accordingly. From Boston to various places in Utah, you can find the vibrant Holi 2023 festivities that surely present a traditional event in a truly mesmerizing way.

It's the perfect opportunity for Indians living abroad to be connected to their cultural roots back home and for those genuinely interested in the Holi festival to experience it fully. However, it is always best to attend Holi events that recognize the significance of the culture and history of the event.

Colaba Mumbai|17.77km from city center
Beautiful historic hotel which is iconic in South Mumbai opposite the Gateway of India. The club room was beautiful and well appointed. Service was polite but requests from the room were a little slow to be responded to and we didn’t meet the ‘butler’ that was supposed to be available to us throughout our stay. There was some construction work happening on the roof directly above our room during our stay which was deafeningly loud, it took 3 calls to the front desk to get a resolution which was disappointing. At this level of hotel I would have expected at least a warning before the work started and a plan on how to mitigate its effects on us without us having to complain. Having a toddler needing an afternoon nap whilst jackhammers were pounding the ceiling was not an experience we enjoyed. To their credit they did stop the work for 2 hours to let our child nap, but the experience lessened appreciation of the Taj stay.

This charming hotel is located very close to the airport. The staff is very warm and friendly and takes good care of their guest. The rooms are clean and spacious and reminded me of 5 star properties from back in the 90’s. A good place to host weddings as they have ample of space to organise all the various functions etc. Only and biggest drawback is the layout of the hotel. I really really recommend the owners/***agement accommodate another lift and staircase lobby as the hotel design is such that the rooms are quite far away from the main lift lobby and becomes a hassle to travel from one end to another

What are the Holi rituals?

As mentioned above, the Holi festival celebrates the ending of Winter and the welcoming of the Spring season. Although the rituals sometimes vary depending on where you are during the celebration, for the most part, festivities include colorful powders, custom folk music, and plenty of delicious sweets.

colorful powders / Source: rishi @ Unsplash

The fundamental essence of the tradition includes burning away the evil spirits brought about by the fire-immune Holika, who the festival is named after. This is done through the use of pyres across India with twigs, leaves, and other flammable objects being tossed inside to welcome in the new beginnings coming in Spring. One should remember the eternal spirits of the Holi rituals and respect them as they participate in various Holi 2023 activities.
There are several customs and traditions during the Holi festival, and most locals would prepare days ahead of the start date. Traditional snacks are prepared, and wood logs used for pyres and Holi rituals are set up.
  • The play of colors is almost essential in most, if not all, regions of India during the Holi festival. As described above, it is natural for celebrators to drench each other and the air with water and color. More importantly, each color used has a symbolic meaning to the Holi festival. Covered in custom colors, in some regions, locals visit nearby houses and sing relatable songs before moving on to other destinations.

What should I wear?

  • Yes, Holi 2023 will be an unforgettable event for both locals and tourists. However, there are certain dress codes you should probably abide by to ensure you experience the festivities in their entirety.
Cotton is highly recommended. As temperatures increase, cotton is great for keeping your body dry faster. However, if you're planning to get plenty wet throughout the many festivities, then we recommend opting for nylon since these synthetic fibers don't absorb water that much. Whatever you choose, bringing an extra change of clothes will ensure you are comfortable while branding the outfits you celebrate in.

You can almost never go wrong with denim jeans and a tank top. For Holi 2023 or any Holi festival, it is always best to keep it simple. It's also important to wear a pair of comfortable shoes as you'll be doing a lot of walking and running. Comfort is the No.1 necessity. Moreover, keep all jewelry and accessories simple. It is unnecessary to overdo it, especially during a religious ceremony.

What shouldn't I wear?

With that said before, it is important that you avoid certain clothing and accessories when celebrating Holi 2023. First, see-through clothing or any fabric that clings tightly to your body is not recommended. To keep it in line with Holi 2023, it is best to dress in vibrant, colorful clothing and avoid anything overly dark or plain. Shoes with too much bling and heels will be no fun, not just for the aesthetics but also for your comfort. For the latter, it's best to prevent any ankle sprains or foot injuries when trying to keep up with the fast pace of the celebrations.

👉 Simply put, avoid causing too much distraction or irritation to the locals. As a foreigner, the last thing you want is to attract too much attention. Don't over-accessorize with jewelry, clothing, scarves, etc. Always respect local customs and traditions and never wear or display anything that will offend locals or the Holi festival in general.

Who celebrates Holi, and how has it expanded beyond India?

You should also apply skin moisturizer for better defense again the various colored powder that may flow your way. Fortunately, many places in India have adopted organic ingredients in their powders to protect you and the environment.
