Turku Vacation Packages - Top Things to do in Turku

Some people might ask what’s so special about a funicular elevator going to a smallish hill where walking is also possible and even quite easy. But the point in the Kakola Funikulaari is that it has a special reputation among the Finnish people. It was built around 2019 and marketed as being a handy way to access the Kakolanmaki hill (Kakola Jailhouse used to be there but nowadays it’s more a hipster district of Turku). Even for the people living on the hill it was supposed to offer a handy way to carry the shopping bags. Anyway, so many things happened. The funicular was delayed, it was extremely expensive and in the end looked little like a trashcan on a track. The funicular was also so much unserviceable during the early times that it gained a special reputation and was a source of numerous and numerous memes and jokes. Well, now it’s working (if not broken that day) and you can experience the feeling of riding the famous little funicular. The elevator is free of charge and fully automatic. You can experience this internet-famous funicular on your way to another Turku specialty, Fori - tiny river boat crossing the tiny river. It can be found in the address Linnankatu 55, Turku. It’s located just a kilometer away from the center, very near the river. #finland #turku #funicular #travelguide#roadtrip#summervacation#urbanexplorer
Ruissalo is an island just outside Turku. That’s the place where the locals can go relaxing, jogging or walking. There are numerous other activities too. I knew that the ferry ships traveling between Stockholm and Turku do cruise very near the Ruissalo beach so I went there to take a few pictures and enjoy the moment. Unfortunately that day the cruise ferry was delayed so it only came when I was already walking to the parking area and I kind of missed the near-the-beach boat. But it’s not the only thing you can experience there (although I recommend to visit the beach in the afternoon due to the absolute spectacular boat view). The place is extremely calm that it really calms the body and mind. I also saw a swan couple that let me come very close. If you happen to stay a little time in Turku, I definitely recommend going to Ruissalo. During the summer it might be difficult during yearly rock festivals held at the island but outside the festival times the place is so calming and relaxing that I can’t even describe. You can go to Ruissalo by car, take a bus (line 8 from the center) or take the public water bus line from Martinsilta quay. It’s located some 8 km from the city center. #turku #finland #ruissalo #historicculture#nationalpark#naturalwonders#seasidephotoguide#roadtrip#summervacation#beachvacation#urbanexplorer
Well, this one is a plain obvious destination to write of. It’s probably the most often visited tourist attractions in the city of Turku, southwestern Finland. The medieval castle was built during the 13th century. The castle served as a bastion and administrative centre in Eastland, as Finland was during that time a province of Sweden. Only once did the castle figure in the defence, when Russian invaders from Novgorod destroyed Turku in 1318. It more frequently played a role in internal struggles for power within Sweden and the Kalmar Union. The castle's bloom was in the mid-16th century during the reign of Duke John of Finland and Catherine Jagellon. That was when the Renaissance Floor and King's and Queen's hall were built, along with other features. It lost its status as an administrative centre in the 17th century after Per Brahe's period as governor-general of Finland came to an end. Turku castle is today Finland's most visited museum, with some 200,000 visitors a year. The castle has been kept in an excellent condition and it indeed offers visitors many different possibilities. That time I personally visited the chapel because I took part in a wedding ceremony. There are tours inside the castle but there’s also very nice public space inside. You don’t necessarily need to buy a ticket to enjoy of the castle. I personally think that no matter where you go, inside those thick walls there’s another world. Turku Castle is situated near the passenger harbor. You can drive there by car or use public transportation. The distance to the city center is about 3 km and the local bus line number 1 stops besides the castle. #finland #turku #castle #summervacationtravel#oldarchitecture#historicculture#roadtrip#summervacation#urbanexplorer
