Weizhou Island: One of China's Top 10 Most Beautiful Islands

Weizhou Island is one of China's largest islands and the country's largest and youngest volcanic island. During the late Pleistocene (126,000–10,000 years ago), volcanic activity occurred on Weizhou Island, and the deposits from this eruption form the island's main strata. In the late Pleistocene, the crust rose, and Weizhou Island emerged from the sea. In March 2024, Weizhou Island was named one of China's top 10 most beautiful islands. Crocodile Mountain Volcano Park includes Crocodile Mountain and Colorful Beach, and is home to the island's most spectacular volcanic landscapes. The Shengtang Scenic Area is located in Shengtang Village on Weizhou Island and is one of the "Four Great Catholic Churches of the Late Qing Dynasty." The church was built by French missionaries in 1853 and took 10 years to complete. Sanpo Temple, also known as Houtian Palace, was built in the third year of the Qianlong Emperor's reign (1738). Weizhou Lighthouse is located at the top of Weizhou Island and was established in 1956. The lighthouse was rebuilt in 2002 and is 22 meters tall, with a light range of 18 nautical miles.
