UCCA Ullens Center for Contemporary Art hosts Hiroshi Sugimoto's photography exhibition, featuring a total of 13 series with more than 120 pieces, encompassing the major works of his nearly 50-year photography career. The content is very rich. In the theaters, he sets the exposure time according to the duration of a movie, compressing the entire film into a single still image. This photo is thus filled with a sense of story and life. He can give life to the 'people' in wax museums and the 'animals' in natural history museums through photography. Regarding the seas he photographs, he says this is his way of projecting the seascapes in his mind onto the canvas of the world. Hiroshi Sugimoto's unique understanding of photography as a medium: a technique concerning time and space. 'Time' becomes the theme that runs through all of Sugimoto's creations—every contemplation of the present, past, and future is condensed within the set exposure time. The endless instant, 'endless' and 'instant' are two words related to time yet with opposing meanings, interpreting the concept of unity of opposites. It made me begin to understand what 'conceptual photography' means. From birth to death, the exposure time for humans is only once. A person's life in the vast universe is almost folded into a single photograph, but it is a photo full of vitality, recording laughter and tears, pride and loss, and endless love.
