Choi Yiu Estate: A Geometric Architectural Marvel

Choi Yiu Estate, located in Lai King Hill, Kwai Chung, New Territories, Hong Kong, is a public housing estate developed by the Hong Kong Housing Society. Known for its unique geographical location and comprehensive facilities, it has become a model for public housing in Hong Kong. Built on a hillside, the estate offers a beautiful natural environment and convenient living facilities, providing residents with a comfortable living environment. The estate is named in honor of Sir Cho-yiu Kwan, one of the founding members of the Hong Kong Housing Society, who passed away suddenly on December 7, 1971. Choi Yiu Estate was completed in three phases between 1976 and 1981 and is the third self-financed estate developed by the Hong Kong Housing Society. The construction process faced multiple delays due to foundation engineering issues and financial difficulties, but it was eventually completed successfully. The architectural design of Choi Yiu Estate combines practicality and aesthetics, earning several architectural design awards. The buildings range in height from 3 to 38 stories, with the tallest, Kai King House, once being the tallest public housing building in the world. The design concept of the estate focuses on creating more open spaces at different levels, with a site coverage of only 25%. It also features the first public housing swimming pool in Hong Kong. Additionally, the estate includes a shopping mall, schools, sports, and recreational facilities, providing residents with convenient living conditions.
