York Minster, a must-see attraction

Photos 2-4: On May 2, 1916, York experienced its first Zeppelin raid of World War I, and two more later that year. The damage caused by the bombing prompted the York branch to take precautions to protect the church's irreplaceable stained glass, and the Stoneyard team removed 109 windows, including the Great East Window, the Five Sisters Window, and the Great West Window. These windows were hidden in bulletproof bunkers at secret locations around the cathedral campus. They were later restored and put back into use between 1923 and 1925. Photos 5-7: This instrument dates back to 1632, when the most famous organ maker, Robert Dallam, was paid £297 to create "the finest, largest, fullest, most powerful, and loudest organ." It was later destroyed by arson and rebuilt in 1829. Photo 8: The Great West Window, completed in 1340, is located at the end of the church. This window is known as the "Heart of Yorkshire" because of the shape of the stone carvings above it, and it demonstrates the authority and purpose of the church. Photo 6: The Five Sisters Window York Minster's Five Sisters Window is the only monument in the country dedicated to the women of the British Empire who died in World War I. Undercroft Museum Explore 2,000 years of history in the most advanced interactive room beneath the cathedral.
