Shaanbei cave dwellings are a unique form of residential architecture on the Loess Plateau in northern China. The main advantage of cave dwellings is that they are warm in winter and cool in summer. Cave dwellings are mainly built by taking advantage of the characteristics of loess, and arch-shaped spaces are excavated in the thick loess layer. From the appearance, there are cliff-style cave dwellings (excavated on natural soil cliffs), sunken cave dwellings (a square pit is dug on the flat ground, and then the cave dwellings are excavated on the pit wall), and other forms. The internal facilities generally have a kang, which is a place for sleeping and heating, and is heated by burning firewood and other methods. The doors and windows of the cave dwellings are also very particular, and there are usually exquisite paper-cuts for decoration. This architectural form reflects the full use of local natural environment and resources by the people of Shaanbei and is an important carrier of local folk culture.
