The winter Shaxi is as beautiful as a painting
The winter Shaxi has morning fog and dusk. Every early winter, it becomes even more beautiful like a painting~ The temperature is comfortable, and the scenery is beautiful.
In the winter of Shaxi, there is an unpredictable wind. Every day you can see a grand sunrise and sunset, and the villagers who are busy sowing in the fields. In another month, you can see the colorful auspicious clouds every day.
Shaxi Ancient Town is the only surviving market on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, a truly living secluded ancient village, simple, pure, half worldly, half paradise! When you come here, you will unconsciously slow down.

A decade ago, the tranquility and allure of Shaxi left a profound mark on me❤️. This year, I returned to this beloved place with my family in tow. Every day, strolling the ancient streets with rich coffee in hand☕, time seemed to stand still.
However, this trip wasn’t all easygoing. Bringing Sienna here ignited many debates. Some believe that traveling with children might disrupt their routines and isn’t suitable for them. Yet, we believe that travel can offer children unparalleled experiences and perspectives🌍.
In Shaxi, Sienna had the chance to connect with nature🌱 and experience a life distinct from the city. Seeing the curiosity and excitement in her eyes, we felt it was all worth it.
But we also faced challenges, such as ensuring Sienna’s safety and comfort. It really got me thinking about the balance between travel and family life.
What do you think? Is traveling with children a good idea, or should we wait until they’re older? Eager to hear your views and comments!

Relax in Shaxi Ancient Town
It may be a little out of the way but I can't stress how lovely Shaxi Ancient Town is. Full of handicrafts, cafés, bakeries, restaurants and bars it's a wonderful place to spend a day or two.
I stayed for 2 days and wished I'd stayed longer! There are even vegan restaurants. It is midway between Lijiang and Dali so visit on the way between either two. Getting there is a little difficult, it takes a train and then a bus, but once you're there ask about local minibusses or drivers. They'll drive you directly to Dali for ¥80.

The most CHILLED. Shaxi and Shibaoshan.
Shaxi is commercial, but still in a nice way. People are relaxed and happy. Nice restaurants and small bars abound. Of course there are handicraft shops, but there seems to be no connection with local crafts people. The streets are small and car free. There’s a river and water area. For foreigners and locals alike, there’s Peter’s Kitchen - an absolute gem of a bakery, that was always jam packed when I visited. Hungry Buddha is a super vegan option, near the large tree. Be careful, the pizzas are quite large.
The trip recommended to me was Shibaoshan temples and grottoes. Again, I recommend Komoot hiking maps and further, to do my route in reverse. Start near Shaxi and hike steeply upwards, marvelling at the rock formations and occasional sculptures until you reach the temple and grottoes. From there, cross the valley to more sculptures and rock features. Then find the paths towards Jinding temple area with craggy grottoes and a lot of monkeys. Down the road to the exit, the nunnery up to the side provides food by donation. It was pretty tasty too!
Overall Shaxi, is a fantastic place to chill and hike for a couple of nights. Highly recommended!

Shaxi Ancient Town - a truly magical place
A magical ancient town full of wonder and incredible beauty where there is a clear stream flowing down the center and all the aged design house owners take incredible care and pride in their gardens to add a rainbow of colors and personality.
It’s long been called the Switzerland of China and after our trip to see this with our own eyes - I can confirm it’s really a special must see destination when wishing to explore ancient beauty outside of the big cities.
Within the city there are cute little coffee shops, traditional food, original and immaculately designed home stays / boutique hotels which are a must try, to absorb yourself in the atmosphere.
It you a fortunate to visit in Spring you will be able to admire the river surrounded in flowers on both sides hugging the river. Take some time to admire the old arched stone bridge that is perfect during golden hour in the afternoon and also great for photos.
Make sure to pass by the old souvenir shop in the main square where a friendly little old lady who might just be as old as the town, helps you buy little mementos and strawberries.
Whether you are a tourist or a local, Shaxi Ancient Town should be on your travel list. This really was one of the most beautiful places I have visited so far. You will not regret it.

Charm of Yunnan - Shaxi Ancient Town
Getting There - Shaxi Ancient Town is a pleasant surprise sitting between Dali and Lijiang. It’s easy to find local mini bus that takes you either from Lijiang or Dali straight to the town for a reasonable price.
It is a famous attraction among Chinese as once it played an important role as a bustling trade point on the Tea Horse Caravan Road.
My friend and I rode motorcycle all the way from Lijiang to Shaxi and stayed at a local guesthouse that provides a nice view of the entire area. Be warned that prices for everything are slightly higher than Lijiang or Dali but a visit is definitely worth it. Many people fall in love with how tranquil this town is as my friend and I did as well.
In the town, the ancient stage, temples, alleyways, houses, village gates, bridges, and traditional fairs all remain intact.

First day of Tiger Year in Shaxi
We started our trip in the morning from Dali with the direction Lijiang. Somewhere in the middle between Dali and Lijiang is an ancient town of Shaxi. Shaxi was an important stop on the old tea route, which lead from Yunnan to Burma and Tibet.
Just after we got off the highway, there was a police filter, where they checked our travel codes and temperature. Beware that you still have mountain road ahead and it is quite whirly. Also the road to Shaxi is not in great shape. Although I think they are working on an alternative way to get there.
When we arrived in Shaxi, we were grated by a town, which is still waking up. The pavement, the houses, the shops, the temple... Everything seemed to be out of a fairytale. And the elderly people were really eager to get to talk to you. I stopped to look for directions and a man came to tell me where I can find a toilet and also asked about where I am from, if we were already engaded in a discussion.
Xingjao Temple was decorated with red lampions. Sideng market square too, and all shops had red stripes of blessings, door gods and red lampions.
Everything was dressed up nicely for the new year, but there was no sight of the firecrackers in the old town. I think they all got cleaned up already.
I really liked the town. I think next time we should stay at least overnight there.

Shaxi is like Lijiang more than ten years ago. Neat stone road, there is a clear stream on both sides of the street, the water is unbelievable.
Rows of shops are also old houses, wooden carved doors and windows, some are snack bars, some sell clothing, some are hardware department stores, there are also one or two bookstores, coffee shops, cute shops, neither People feel too commercial, and they don't make tourists feel too primitive. It maintains a proper balance between old and simple tastes.
Ancient stage is Shaxi is also the landmark building of the temple on the street. The tree on the open space in front of the stage is old, and it has its appearance in the old photos of the last century. At that time, the tree was still relatively Fine, not as leafy as it is now, standing on the ground. The opposite of the
ancient stage is the Xingjiao Temple built in the Ming Yongle period. It and the ancient stage form the center point of Shaxi. In the early years of the information picture, the people here come and go, the horses shuttle constantly, than Qingming Shanghe map will be a bit more lively.
The world is changing, the flow of years is like a white pass, and the bustling market of the bustling city has now vanished, leaving only the bluestone board to tell the silence of the land.
Shaxi's inn, all of them are exquisite and have a mood, the flowers and trees are sparse, and the public space has comfortable and interesting couches. When people see it, they want to go in and have a cup of tea and spend a long time. I hope that I am an innkeeper, guarding a yard of flowers, boil water, cooking tea, watching the clouds.
Bean..
The ancient town of Shaxi is different from Wuzhen. It is popular in the ancient town of Jiangnan. It still retains its original features due to inconvenient transportation. Although it has been a lot of prosperity since four years ago, there are still not many people. Ancient temples, ancient stage, ancient shops, ancient red sandstone streets, centuries-old trees, ancient lanes... all of which fascinate us. Sifang Street is the most characteristic place in Shaxi. Under the blue sky and white clouds, the uneven stone road, occasionally there will be puppies walking. The Shaxi without the tour group is more free. Everyone who comes here seems to be distracted. They played chess on the street, or bought some pine mushrooms on the street, or just wandered aimlessly, and we did the same, taking pictures while walking, stopping and stopping.
Jojos trip.

Morning mist in Shaxi in early December
In the morning, head to Yujin Bridge. By this time, the sun will have risen. You can see a layer of white frost on the grass by the river. Looking at the distant mountains, the morning mist is clear and silky. The morning mist will last until around 9 am.
Despite the 0°C weather in the morning, many people are already taking photos on Yujin Bridge. After taking photos of the morning mist in the cold morning, enjoy a bowl of steaming rice noodles at "Three Fish Snack Bar" on Sideng Street. What a blessing!

Shaxi Ancient Town, Dali | Meet Yourself
|Meet Yourself. Shaxi Ancient Town, Dali, a place with real wind.
It is not as bustling as Dali Ancient Town, nor as crowded as Xizhou Ancient Town. However, this quiet and simple village town, where accommodation is always fully booked, makes me linger.
🚶♂️➡️Shaxi Ancient Town Travel Route:
Yujin Bridge → Sifang Street Stage → Grandma A Rui's Shop → Xingjiao Temple → Sideng Street → Beiguzong Lane → Pioneer Bookstore
🖼️About the Scenic Spots:
✅Yujin Bridge
You can see the morning mist and sunset. The morning mist is around 07:40 (it is recommended to see the morning mist on a sunny day, which is more beautiful); the sunset is around 17:30-18:00.
✅Sifang Street Stage
This ancient stage is a landmark building in Shaxi. There is also Grandma A Rui's Shop and Youli Grocery Store nearby, where you can take photos.
✅Xingjiao Temple
Xingjiao Temple is opposite the ancient stage. It was built in 1415 and is a Ming Dynasty building with three courtyards. It is the only surviving ancient market on the ancient Tea Horse Road in Yunnan and Tibet. It is open from 9:00 to 17:00.
✅Beiguzong Lane
There is a persimmon tree in the courtyard of this lane. The whole lane is very quiet, with few tourists, and is very comfortable.
✅Sideng Street
The only surviving market on the ancient Tea Horse Road. There are many literary shops and food stores on this street. The word "Shaxi" was also taken here.
✅Pioneer Bookstore
The bookstore is 2 km away from Shaxi Ancient Town. If you don't drive, you can take a yellow bike on the roadside, which takes about 8 minutes.
It is about 130 km away from Dali City, with no direct bus, and the transportation is inconvenient. Because it is far from the city and has a small flow of people, it is full of fireworks.
🚗Self-driving: It takes about 2 hours from Dali to Shaxi Ancient Town and about 1.5 hours from Lijiang to Shaxi Ancient Town.
🚗Carpooling: Available in Dali and Lijiang, about CNY 80 per person for a one-way trip.
🚌Bus: Take a bus from Dali Bus Station to Shaxi, CNY 42 per person, 3 hours.

Shaxi Ancient Town: A Time Imprint on the Tea Horse Road
Walking into Shaxi Ancient Town feels like traveling through a time tunnel, returning to the prosperous era of the tea-horse trade. The ancient town is nestled among mountains and rivers, with ancient buildings arranged in an orderly manner. On both sides of the bluestone-paved roads are quaint shops and residences, retaining the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. Strolling through the alleys of the ancient town, one can feel the tranquility and simplicity, as if time has slowed down here. The surrounding mountain and water scenery is even more breathtaking, with lush trees and murmuring streams, perfectly complementing the ancient charm of the town. Here, you can taste authentic caravan dishes and experience the food culture of the Tea Horse Road; you can also visit the ancient theater stage, listen to a melodious ancient tune, and travel back to that distant era.

A hidden town in the mountains: sunshine, world heritage, and a lively atmosphere.
🏞 Shaxi Ancient Town is located to the west of the Ancient Tea Horse Road, which winds along the eastern foot of Cangshan Mountain in Dali. In 2001, Shaxi was included in the World Architectural Heritage Protection List as the "only surviving market on the Ancient Tea Horse Road."
🏡 However, 20 years have passed, and Shaxi is still low-key and introverted. Its unique natural scenery, profound historical and cultural heritage, and slow-paced lifestyle seem to have remained the same.
🌳 Natural scenery:
The natural scenery of Shaxi is picturesque. The Heihui River is like a green ribbon, gently surrounding it, adding a touch of agility and gentleness to Shaxi. The ancient bridge spans the river, connecting the bustling world on both sides. Pedestrians hurry across the bridge, while the water flows gently below, creating a moving picture of a water town.
🏯 History and culture: Shaxi Ancient Town has a history of more than 2,500 years. It is an important post station on the Ancient Tea Horse Road and has a profound cultural heritage. A large number of ancient buildings from the Ming and Qing Dynasties have been preserved here. These buildings not only demonstrate the architectural wisdom of the ancient Bai people, but also bear witness to the prosperity and vicissitudes of the Ancient Tea Horse Road.
🥢 Lifestyle:
The pace of life in Shaxi is slow, and people can find inner peace here. The streets of the ancient town are quiet and peaceful, yet full of vitality. Walking here, you will be moved by your gratitude for nature and your pursuit of the true beauty of life.
📌 Recommended two-day itinerary in Shaxi:
Day 1⃣:
Morning: Watch the sunrise at Yujin Bridge
Morning: Stroll around the ancient town, Sideng Street, Xingjiao Temple, etc.
Afternoon: Visit the surrounding area, such as the Avant-garde Bookstore
Evening: Watch the sunset at Yujin Bridge and the night view of Sifang Street
Day 2⃣
Daytime: Visit Shibao Mountain, Shizhongshan Grottoes, and Baoxiang Temple
🌶 If you visit Shaxi on the weekend, you will come across a market where you can see many local vegetables, fruits, utensils, and so on. The lively atmosphere is very interesting.
🥣 Shaxi's special food:
Rice noodles, rice cakes, wild mushroom hot pot, barbecue, etc.

Don't tell everyone I had a cheap meal in Shaxi.
✅ I have to visit any place where the fairy sister has been. On my way to Shaxi, I unexpectedly found a restaurant called Dianxi Yun Chu (Shaxi Branch). The food was delicious and cheap, and the ingredients were visibly good. The service was also surprisingly good.
‼️ The restaurant is filled with greenery inside and out, which makes for a very healing dining experience.
‼️ I didn't expect that just a simple lunch would come with so many gifts from the waiters, which surprised and delighted me.
✅ The waiters handled things just right and communicated very naturally and enthusiastically.
✅ Personal recommendations:
🥘 Stone Pot Mountain Tofu and Steamed Egg: The tofu is tender and smooth, perfect for the elderly and children.
🥘 Stir-fried Shrimp: This dish contains celery and lily bulbs, making it nutritious and light. I really love it.
🥘 Stir-fried Beef Liver Mushrooms: The large slices of beef liver mushrooms are fragrant and go well with rice. My best friend ate three bowls of rice because of this dish.
🥘 Vegetable Tofu Soup: Light and perfectly paired with the other dishes.
👉 Unexpectedly, I drank three bottles of fruit wine and had a dessert, all of which were surprises from the restaurant. I was so happy with the meal, it was really worth it.
✅ I will come back to Shaxi and eat at Yun Chu again. Don't miss this restaurant when you visit Shaxi.

Dali Shaxi.
Finally found a treasure homestay that I want to rave about|||As soon as I stepped in, I felt like I had entered a dream world. Every detail hit my heart just right. It is exactly my favorite style, simple yet warm, rustic yet stylish.
🌳The greenery in the yard is lush, the flowers are bright and dripping, and the breeze brings bursts of floral fragrance, making people feel relaxed and happy. Sitting on the rocking chair, closing your eyes, feeling the gentle touch of the sun, it seems that all the troubles are thrown away.
🛏The interior of the room is even more amazing. The wooden furniture exudes a faint fragrance, and the bedding is soft and comfortable, as if surrounded by clouds. The decorative paintings on the wall are ingenious, and each one seems to tell a story.
The owner here must be a person who loves life to create such a charming homestay. Whether it is the first ray of sunshine in the morning or the starry sky at night, you can feel the beauty of life in Yinhe Xiaoyuan.
If you are also looking for a place where your soul can rest, then Yinhe Xiaoyuan is definitely your best choice. Highly recommended to everyone! 🎉

Shaxi in November is so beautiful, but it can be cold in the morning and evening
Sunbathing near the ancient theater
So comfortable
The sun is shining, the sky is so blue
A place forgotten by time
Everything here is so comfortable

Dali Shaxi, Yunnan | Do you know where to go in Yunnan?
"Beautiful Dali, Bai people build fresh houses."
This is why I want to visit Dali.
When I approached Shaxi, I thought of a poem by Ouyang Xiu. One line goes: "I love the beautiful things in Jiangxi, and I often boast about them to people in the north."

Shaxi Service Center → Ouyang Courtyard → Mint Cafe → Grandma A Rui's Shop → Ancient Stage → Xingjiao Temple → Yujin Bridge → Avant-garde Bookstore → Poetry Tower → Return (Image 2 is a detailed map guide, you can check it out if you need it)
1⃣Ouyang Courtyard: The driver will drop you off at Shaxi Ancient Town Service Center. Walk along Siteng Street for a few minutes to reach Ouyang Courtyard, where you can take photos at the same spot as the fairy sister.
2⃣Mint Cafe: Continue walking along Siteng Street to reach Mint Cafe, which is the Windy Cafe in the drama. You need to make a purchase to take photos inside. The Shaxi Wall next to it is also a great photo spot (Image 5).
3⃣Grandma A Rui's Shop → Ancient Stage → Xingjiao Temple: Walk a few more minutes and turn right to reach the Ancient Stage. There are many attractions here, such as the Big Locust Tree, Grandma A Rui's Shop, Xingjiao Temple, and Youli Grocery Store. They are all great photo spots. You need to make a purchase to take photos at Grandma A Rui's Shop (Images 6, 7).
4⃣Yujin Bridge: After taking photos at the Ancient Stage, follow the navigation and walk for a few minutes to reach Yujin Bridge. Sitting by the bridge and enjoying the breeze is very comfortable. It really feels like a windy place.
5⃣Avant-garde Bookstore → Poetry Tower: After crossing the bridge, there are many yellow bikes by the roadside. Bargain for a round trip for CNY 15 to the Avant-garde Bookstore, where you can take photos at the same spot as Li Xian. You can also take photos at the Poetry Tower opposite. The view from the tower is also beautiful. Finally, return to the ancient town and enjoy some food and drinks. The ancient town is not big, and you can finish exploring it in half a day.
Although this place became popular because of the TV drama "Meet Yourself," when you come here, the simple folk customs of the ancient town will deeply touch you and make you fall in love with this place!

Shaxi Ancient Town: Tranquil Times on the Bluestone Road
In the early morning, when the first ray of sunlight penetrates the mist and gently falls on the bluestone road of Shaxi Ancient Town, I feel as if I have stepped into a paradise far away from the hustle and bustle of the world.
I stayed in a homestay in the ancient town. When I opened the window, I could see the rolling mountains in the distance and the ancient buildings in the near distance. The morning air was filled with the faint scent of earth and flowers, which refreshed me. I decided to take advantage of the few people to feel the tranquility of the ancient town in the morning.
I walked out of the homestay and slowly walked along the bluestone road. The road has been polished by the years and has become as smooth as a mirror, and every stone seems to tell the history of the ancient town. In the morning, the ancient town is free from the hustle and bustle of the day and the noise of tourists, with only the occasional sound of birds and the smoke from the distant farmhouses, creating a peaceful and harmonious picture.
I strolled through the alleys of the ancient town, flanked by old wooden houses and brick walls, with every door and window revealing the traces of time. I noticed that some of the doors were half-closed, and I could hear the soft voices and laughter of the residents of the ancient town as they began their busy day. This breath of life made me feel especially warm and friendly.
In the square of the ancient town, I met an old lady who was cleaning. She was holding a broom, her movements were skillful and powerful, and her face was filled with a satisfied and peaceful smile. I went up to her and talked to her, and she told me that she had lived in this ancient town for decades and had witnessed the changes and development of the ancient town. Her words were full of love and pride for the ancient town.
As the sun gradually rose, the ancient town slowly woke up. I walked through the streets of the ancient town and saw many breakfast vendors, busy greeting customers, and the steaming breakfast gave off a tempting aroma. I tasted a bowl of authentic ancient town rice noodles, and the delicious taste is still unforgettable.
There is no noisy noise and busy rhythm, only tranquility, harmony, and beauty. This trip not only allowed me to appreciate the beauty of the ancient town but also gave me a sense of inner peace and satisfaction.
