Sakura Magic at Himeji Castle
My visit to Himeji Castle during sakura season was like stepping into a fairy tale! The castle, with its stunning white walls, looked even more beautiful surrounded by soft pink cherry blossoms. Walking through the castle grounds, petals were gently falling like snow, creating a magical scene.
I had so much fun taking photos of the castle framed by the blooming sakura trees. It felt like everywhere I turned, there was another perfect picture waiting. Climbing up to the top of the castle rewarded me with a breathtaking view of the entire area, covered in a sea of pink and white.
People were having picnics under the trees, and the happy, festive atmosphere made everything even more special. Himeji Castle during sakura season is a dream come true, and I’ll never forget that beautiful spring day!

Himeji Castle and its Gardens 🏯
My first castle visit to Himeji Castle during my trip in Japan. There were so many levels in the Castle which you can explore, all the while learning about its history such as it's past occupants/families. Throughout the castle levels (especially at the top), I got to take in the beautiful scenery overseeing the castle's surrounding architecture and its gardens (including the city).
Even the entrance and path leading up to the Castle are lined by cherry blossom trees in bloom during the spring period we visited. But if you love greenery/nature the Koko-en garden beside Himeji castle is also a must go with tranquil rivers and a colourful scene painted by a large array of plants and flowers 💮
Tickets are needed for both the castle and garden but can be purchased as a bundle.
Just a word of caution, the steps as you traverse the Castle are quite steep and small so be careful as you try to climb them.

Japan’s earliest World Heritage ~ Himeji Castle 🏰
Himeji Castle is one of the 100 famous castles in Japan. Together with Kumamoto Castle and Matsumoto Castle, it is known as the three most famous castles in Japan🙌🏻 Himeji Castle is very well preserved. Although it has a long history, it has successfully escaped the Warring States Period, World War II, etc. It was damaged by wars and natural disasters, so there was not much damage👍🏻The castle tower in the castle is also one of the 12 existing castle towers in Japan. Therefore, Himeji Castle is not only a national treasure and national special historical site designated by the Japanese government, but also one of the first batch of world-famous castles in Japan. One of the cultural heritages, it is known as "Japan's most famous city"🤩Many Japanese dramas and movies have been filmed here! 😝
The pure white exterior wall of Himeji Castle is full of Japanese aesthetics and is very eye-catching. What amazed me the most was the layout of the interior of the castle. It reflected that Japan’s defense technology was very mature at that time and highlighted the wisdom of the ancients😍
Although Himeji is not close to Osaka, they are both worth a visit🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

This is a truly magnificent castle and as you walk around the grounds there are many fine views of this astonishing building. It is built on top of the biggest, most impressive dry stonewall I've ever seen. The building itself brings thoughts of Samurai. Used many times in films from Kurosawa's films to James Bond. This is a visual treat as well as an historically important part of Japanese culture.

Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is a castle located in Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Due to its white walls, it is also known as the White Heron Castle. It is one of Japan's three most famous castles, alongside Kumamoto Castle and Matsumoto Castle, and one of Japan's three most famous hilltop castles, alongside Matsuyama Castle and Wakayama Castle. Due to its high level of preservation, it is known as "Japan's most famous castle." Located in the center of Himeji, it is the city's main symbol. Many period dramas and movies have been filmed here, or have used Himeji Castle as a symbol of the now-destroyed Edo Castle.
Himeji Castle is built on top of Himeyama, which is 45.6 meters above sea level, and the main keep is 31 meters high. The castle resembles an elegant white heron, which is why it is also known as the White Heron Castle. It is the largest and most elegant of Japan's surviving ancient castles.
Himeji Castle was a daimyo castle during the shogunate period, and the highest example of castle-building technology during the Edo period.
Himeji Castle is tightly structured and impregnable, with three layers of spiral-shaped strategic defenses, including outer, middle, and inner moats. The defenses are cleverly constructed, starting with three concentric moats, which surround the tall, winding stone walls, with several gates and watchtowers between the walls. The walls and watchtowers have small holes for shooting arrows and guns; the roads in the inner courtyard of the castle are winding and labyrinthine, but can be clearly seen from the top floor. The roof is decorated with large, ornate animal-shaped shachihoko, which protrude from the eaves and are talismans against fire. The largest castle tower is 92 meters above sea level. The three smaller castle towers are cleverly connected by a unique series of defensive walls. The undulating gables and white plaster walls achieve a beautiful balance, giving people a sense of tranquility and elegance.

Stroll through the White Heron Castle and visit a stunning Japanese castle.
Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle, is a Japanese national treasure and a World Heritage Site, famous for its well-preserved condition. This 400-year-old seven-story castle tower is a must-visit for Japanese history enthusiasts.
🔅Long history
Himeji Castle was built in the 14th century, and the existing structure was mainly built in 1609, and has undergone several renovations to become what we see today. Many famous historical figures have lived in Himeji Castle, such as Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Ikeda Terumasa, Miyamoto Musashi, and others.
🔅Well-preserved
Himeji Castle is one of the few ancient castles in Japan that has not been damaged by war or natural disasters. Many famous Japanese castles, such as Edo Castle and Nijo Castle, have not been preserved intact due to fires or bombings. Himeji Castle has been fortunate to escape many disasters.
🔅Complex defense system
The castle tower is built on a hill overlooking the entire city. The castle has maze-like paths and multi-layered fortifications, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack, and has never been captured.
🚆Route: Take the JR Tokaido Sanyo Line from Osaka Station for 1 hour and 5 minutes to Himeji Station, and you can see the castle right across from the north exit. Walk north for 20 minutes or take a bus to get there.
Himeji Castle is a niche attraction, and when I went there at 7 am, there were many locals walking their dogs.

The whole visit was amazing given its rich heritage and magnificent architecture. I am grateful to make it this trip under my tight itinerary. The free market nearby was another highlight where you can get the vintage products for local.

Dancing Egrets - Himeji Castle
Himeji Castle is the most beautiful and magnificent castle in Japan, and one of the few early castles. It was built in 1333, and the five-story, six-level (inner layer) main keep and three small keeps that have been preserved to this day were built in 1580 by order of the samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and later expanded by the samurai Ikeda Terumasa in 1608. Its beautiful shape, multiple roofs and gables, and white plastered walls resemble a group of dancing egrets, hence it is also known as the "Egret Castle". Himeji Castle is a World Cultural Heritage Site and a Japanese National Treasure.

Himeji Castle 🏯
#traveldiaries
Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle, due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered Japan's most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country's twelve original castles.
Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today was completed in 1609. It is made up of over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths.
The inside of the main keep is filled with very beautiful wood and it’s fascinating to see the military aspects of architecture that the castle has, like hiding places for soldiers and weapon racks. There’s also a throne on the top floor and amazing views of the city and outer parts of the castle.
💰Average Price per Person: 1000 yen for Himeji Castle; 1050 yen for combined ticket for Himeji Castle and Kokoen Garden.

This iconic castle is not only a symbol of Himeji City but is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its magnificent architecture and long history make it a dream destination for tourists.
Majestic Main Keep: A Witness to History
Upon entering Himeji Castle, the most striking feature is the towering five-story, six-level main keep. Built in 1601, it is a typical example of early Edo period architecture. Despite multiple restorations, it still retains its original appearance. Each floor's design is full of wisdom and ingenuity; for instance, the height and angle of the stairs are meticulously calculated to defend against enemies. From the top floor, you can overlook the entire city of Himeji and gaze at distant mountains and lakes, offering a breathtaking view that reflects the dual considerations of landscape and strategy in ancient castle construction.
Breathtaking Scenery: Different Charms in Every Season

Historical Treasure: Perfectly Preserved Cultural Heritage
Himeji Castle is considered a historical treasure not only for its beauty but also for its historical significance and cultural value. Despite enduring multiple wars and natural disasters since the Sengoku period, it still retains its complete wooden structure and exquisite castle design, which is extremely rare among existing ancient castles in Japan. Every stone wall and tile here witnesses the changes and prosperity of Japanese history. The artifacts and historical stories displayed inside the castle vividly recreate the splendor of the past, making one marvel at the wisdom and craftsmanship of the ancients.
In-Depth Experience of Himeji Castle

Before entering the castle, you can rent a Chinese audio guide to learn about the historical stories and design ingenuity behind each attraction. Walk through the traditional atmosphere of the inner and outer baileys, stroll along the ancient stone steps and corridors, and feel the tranquility and majesty of the ancient castle. Ready to step into a UNESCO World Heritage castle?
Did you know that Himeji Castle is one of the first UNESCO World Heritage sites in Japan? It is an ancient castle that dates back to the 1300s and is renowned for its fine Japanese castle architecture!
It was an amazing experience exploring the castle, but make sure you are physically able to climb the stairs. There are many of them and some can be quite steep in incline. But once you get to the top, the view is quite breathtaking.
I recommend getting a tour for this so that you can learn more about the history of this place. We didn’t, so we could only admire its beauty.
My overall rating of the experience: 4 out of 5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

⭕️ Use ICOCA card (Suica card) for the bus from Osaka Umeda to Kobe Sannomiya, Hanshin Electric Railway 330 yen. Buy the Sannomiya-Himeji one-day pass for 1600 yen at the station office in Kobe Sannomiya, then you can take the Sanyo Electric Railway as much as you want. You will get on and off several times along the way, so you will get your money's worth! 😛😜😁

Even during the rainy season, it started with clear skies, but after a round in the main keep, the weather changed 😔😔😔. Although it wasn't too hot, it wasn't great for taking photos 😂😂😂.
🌇| Koko-en Garden
🎟| Ticket: 300 yen (purchased separately) It is more cost-effective if bought together with the Himeji Castle ticket.
Koko-en Garden is 260 meters to the right after crossing the bridge from the main gate of Himeji Castle. There are bamboo gardens, pine gardens, etc. It is very beautiful if you come during the autumn leaves season. But the green scenery is also nice this season.
🌇| Maya Mountain Cable Car (Night View)
🎟| Ticket: 1760 yen
🚩| Location: Kobe Maya Mountain
🚌| Transportation: Bus No. 18 Kobe Sannomiya Station — Maya Mountain Cable Car Station
⏰| Time: Opening hours: Weekdays 17:30
Holidays 20:50
Taking the cable car up the mountain, you can see one of Japan's three major night views, the Kobe night view. It is very beautiful, but because I came late today, the photos were not as good as those taken at 19:00. The cable car ride is divided into two sections, the first section is a large cable car, and the second section is a small cable car. As the cable car slowly ascends, the night view of Kobe gradually unfolds before your eyes. This is also one of Japan's three major night views and is worth seeing.

This noodle shop offers spicy, black garlic, and basil flavors. The spiciness can be compared to Chengdu. The black garlic is very fragrant, and garlic lovers will definitely like it. The basil flavor is relatively mild.
