Locals Know Best: Must-Try Fried Fish at Ming Xin Coffee Shop (Kampung Valdor)
My recent food adventure took me to Kampung Valdor, a charming village just 30 minutes away. I'd heard rave reviews about the legendary fried 松鱼(snakehead fish) at Ming Xin Coffee Shop (明新茶室), and I couldn't wait to try it for myself.
This dish is a true culinary masterpiece. The 松鱼is marinated with galangal, which removes any muddy taste, and then deep-fried to absolute perfection. The result? A crispy, golden-brown delight that's bursting with flavor. I ordered a portion (perfect for sharing!) along with a plate of char ta pan and a comforting bowl of fish porridge.
The fish was incredible - fragrant, perfectly fried, and seasoned just right. But Ming Xin Coffee Shop (明新茶室) offers more than just amazing fish. While waiting for my food, I saw other tables enjoying plates of laksa, and after chatting with some friendly locals, I learned the coffee shop is also known for its herbal teas.
If you're a food lover seeking an authentic taste of Kampung Valdor, this is a must-visit! Be prepared for a bit of a wait, as this place is popular with locals. Trust me, it's worth it!

Penang, often hailed as the culinary capital of Malaysia, is a paradise for food lovers. The island’s rich cultural tapestry is reflected in its diverse and irresistible cuisine. Here’s a guide to the must-eat foods that define Penang’s gastronomic landscape:
1. Penang Laksa
This iconic dish is a must-try for anyone visiting Penang. Unlike the coconut milk-based laksa found in other parts of Southeast Asia, Penang Laksa is famous for its tangy, tamarind-infused broth, making it refreshingly tart. The soup is loaded with fresh fish, noodles, pineapple, mint, and cucumber, creating a complex blend of flavors that burst with every bite.
2. Char Kuey Teow
Char Kuey Teow is perhaps one of the most beloved street food dishes in Penang. This stir-fried noodle dish is cooked over high heat with soy sauce, fresh prawns, cockles, sliced Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and egg. A good Char Kuey Teow has a slightly charred aroma from the high heat of wok cooking, known as 'wok hei', which is essential to this dish’s distinctive taste.
3. Cendol
To beat the tropical heat, indulge in a bowl of Cendol. This popular dessert features shaved ice topped with green rice flour jelly, palm sugar syrup, and coconut milk. It’s often served with red beans or sweet corn. The combination of creamy, sweet, and chewy textures makes Cendol a refreshing treat at any time of the day.
4. Yam Rice with Braised Pork
For those who prefer savory comfort food, the yam rice with braised pork is a standout. The rice is cooked with cubes of yam, lending a subtle sweetness that complements the savory and richly flavored braised pork. This dish is typically served with a side of salted vegetables and a spicy chili sauce.
5. Satay
No visit to Penang would be complete without trying Satay. These grilled skewers of marinated meat, be it chicken, beef, or lamb, are served with a delectable peanut sauce. Every bite offers a smoky flavor enhanced by the dip, making satay a favorite among locals and tourists alike.
Exploring Penang’s culinary offerings is like taking a journey through the heritage and traditions of its Chinese, Malay, and Indian communities. Each dish tells a story of migration, adaptation, and fusion, making dining in Penang an essential part of experiencing its culture.

🇲🇾 Penang's Culinary Delights: A Must-Eat Food Adventure
#travelchecklist
Penang, often hailed as the food capital of Malaysia, offers a gastronomic paradise for anyone looking to delve into the rich tapestry of flavors that Malaysian cuisine has to offer. From bustling street food stalls to quaint roadside eateries, Penang's must-eat dishes like Charcoal Char Kuey Teow, Oyster Omelette, Asam Laksa, and Duck Egg Char Kuey Teow represent a culinary heritage steeped in tradition and innovation.
Charcoal Char Kuey Teow
A visit to Penang would be incomplete without tasting Char Kuey Teow, especially the version fried over charcoal. This method imparts a unique smoky flavor to the dish, which features flat rice noodles stir-fried with shrimp, cockles, Chinese sausage, bean sprouts, and chives. The high heat from the charcoal caramelizes the ingredients, creating a complex flavor profile that is both delicious and memorable.
Oyster Omelette (Oh Chien)
Another Penang specialty, the Oyster Omelette, combines small, plump oysters with a starchy batter and eggs, fried until crispy around the edges but still soft and gooey in the middle. It's often served with a spicy chili sauce that perfectly complements the rich taste of the oysters, making it a beloved choice among locals and visitors alike.
Asam Laksa
Asam Laksa is a tangy fish-based soup that is both spicy and sour, made from mackerel and tamarind juice. This noodle dish is then garnished with fresh mint, pineapple slices, thinly sliced onion, and a spoonful of shrimp paste, which deepens the flavor. Asam Laksa is a true representation of Penang's complex and bold flavors, a must-try for those who appreciate dishes that pack a punch.
Duck Egg Char Kuey Teow
For an even richer take on the traditional Char Kuey Teow, try the version that includes duck eggs instead of regular chicken eggs. The duck eggs provide a creamier texture and a richer flavor to the dish, making it a luxurious treat. This variation is particularly popular among food aficionados looking for an elevated version of this classic street food.
Visitor Tips
- Street Food Havens: Explore areas like Gurney Drive, Chulia Street, and the Penang Road for the best street food stalls.
- Eating Etiquette: Be prepared to share tables with strangers, as this is common in busy food courts and hawker centers.
- Local Beverages: Pair your meals with local drinks like 'Teh Tarik' or 'Lime Juice' to balance the rich flavors.

The star of the show for me was the seafood station, where I sampled the freshest prawns, crabs, and oysters.
But the culinary journey didn’t stop there. I also tried a variety of Indian, Chinese, and Western dishes. The desserts were equally impressive, with a tempting selection of cakes, pastries, and traditional kuih. It was truly a gastronomic paradise!

🍵 Pretty Teahouse Cafe in Penang
Mu Ming Coftea is one of my favourite cafes in Penang! It is an aesthetic little space specialising in chinese tea based drinks and desserts, although they do also have a coffee menu for the caffeine addicts. Located slightly north of Chulia Street, it is a perfect spot to chill as it is open late until almost midnight.
Tea leaves are grinded into fine powder here, and I got to smell each of them before deciding on my choice of tea. I tried the Iced Tie Guan Yin Latte (RM16), which came with a strong floral aroma and a dash of milk to smoothen it. Those who are health conscious like me can request for less sweet, which made the bitter oolong base more prominent.
Don’t skip on the desserts, which are all baked in-house and infused with the grinded tea powders for intensity. The Peach Oolong Burnt Cheesecake (RM16.90) was delightful with a strong tea base and fruity fragrance, and it was thick but not overly cheesy.

Visited this restaurant for a couple of times now. Cozy ambience, great place for gatherings and drinks! Attentive staff with great service which made us feel very welcomed.

🥣 Cod fish miso soup
🍱 Japanese-Western fusion bento was kinda cute and unique (Chawanmushi topped with cheese was one of a kind and taste like cheese omelette!)

Value for money - 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nan Yang Dao serves very nice Malaysian food at wallet friendly prices and I’m so glad that they have opened a midst the HDB enclave.
Managed to get a promotion where the set comes with a drink (almost free). We had the Big Bowl Curry Mee, KL Hokkien Mee and Penang Fried Kway Teow. All are their more popular choices. The Big Bowl Curry Mee comes with lots of ingredients. Enough for 2 ladies actually. Their Penang Fried Kway Teow unfortunately wasn’t that fragrant, no wok-hey. Many it’s due to the busy dinner crowd. The KL Hokkien Mee is a tad too starchy for us.
Still we will be back, to try other dishes. They even have vegetarian option for non-meat diners.
They close at 9pm with the last order at 8:30pm. So don’t be too late.

A super satisfying food trip to the Penang!
It was a short yet fulfilling trip to Penang!
It started with a visit to the Traditional Kopitiam - Joo Leong cafe where they serve eggs in cute green little cups and toasts with margarine. It was crowded early in the morning so pay a visit there early.
Next, we went to the famous tourist spot, Kek Lok Si temple where they housed a huge Guanyin statue. It’s fun to walk around and feel the peacefulness. Do try out the short cable car trip to the second or third station of the temple to reach the Guanyin statue.
The popular Ayer Itam Asam laksa is just a stone away from the base of the temple. The service was fast and the soup was flavourful. Not to forget the famous Penang Road chendol that everyone has to try! It has a super rich taste of coconut sugar with coconut milk topped with green smooth jelly ! Perfect choice as a dessert under the hot sun!
Do check out the Sunday market - Hin Bus Depot if you happened to visit Penang on weekend. It’s the latest hipster spot where various art and craft creators gather and show their work. Live band performance is pretty cool too.
Eating is never ending in Penang, a few others food that you must check out are prawn noodle and oyster omelette at Lebuh Presgrave, char kway teow, parse bye and curry noodle at Cecil street market.
Wait no more ! #penangtrip #penangfood #penangfoodie
Zen Xin Vegetarian Penang
Looking for some healthy vegetarian food at Penang, Malaysia? Look no further, come try Zen Xin Vegetarian restaurant that is located in the heart of the Penang Island.
We came for an early dinner at about 5pm plus but there were already many tables occupied when we came in the shophouse based restaurant. We look through the menu and really like how it look like a normal Chinese restaurant where instead of serving normal food they make it like it will look and taste interesting as well. Love the old school vibe of the restaurant where it felt like time have stopped at the 1980s. Food was delicious, no wonder there were many people here already when we came at off peak timing.
Do consider this place if you would like to bring your old folks here.
Do also check the social media for opening hours before coming down as well, or even give a call.

Cute dim sum in Penang
You are in for a treat if you are looking for cute looking dim sum and still want to try it in a local delight way. Come try this dim sum store located at the heritage shophouse at George Town, Penang. Indoor seating but without air conditioning for that local touch is what you need to feel when you are waiting for the food. Although stuffy, we were lucky it wasn't too sunny and hot while inside. The food is not only a delight to see and also great to eat as well. We enjoyed looking at the servers and the local people talking and eating. Do note that most of the local foods stores open really early and thus they do close early as well.
Do check before going down the food area!
