Wandered into Zhujiajiao ancient town 🛶
Suzhou’s ancient water towns are overhyped and this less known one is just right in Shanghai for those who don’t want to travel all the way to Suzhou! I decided to stop here a day before going to Suzhou’s Tongli ancient water town and couldn’t help compare both. Tongli is much more ancient and has more historical landmarks, but Zhujiajiao is absolutely stunning and so much more hippy with more cafe, tea houses and cat cafes!

A Journey to Time: Exploring the Enchanting Hongcun Village in Anhui Province
I had the pleasure of visiting Hongcun Village in Anhui Province, and let me tell you—it was an experience that felt like stepping straight into a living, breathing piece of history. Nestled at the foot of Mount Huangshan, this ancient village is a UNESCO World Heritage site that captures the essence of traditional Chinese culture and architecture.
🏠Architecture and Atmosphere
Hongcun Village is renowned for its well-preserved traditional Anhui-style architecture. As I wandered through the narrow, cobblestone streets, I found myself surrounded by white-washed walls, gracefully aged wooden structures, and intricate, centuries-old carvings and murals. The signature "Moon Pond" and "South Lake" are masterpieces of art and design, with their serene waters reflecting the stately buildings and ancient trees that line their shores.
💧One of Hongcun's most remarkable features is its historical irrigation system, known as the "Water Supply System," which ingeniously channels water through the entire village. Walking along these waterways, accompanied by the gentle sound of flowing water, provided a peaceful and almost meditative experience.
✨Cultural Richness
But it’s not just the architecture that’s impressive—Hongcun is a cultural treasure trove. I visited several open museums and ancestral halls that offer a glimpse into the village’s rich history and heritage. Local artisans demonstrated traditional crafts, from ink making to calligraphy, making my visit both educational and deeply engaging.
Visiting Hours and How to Get There
Hongcun Village is open to visitors daily from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM, offering ample time to explore its winding alleys, historical sites, and scenic vistas. I recommend arriving early in the morning to beat the crowds and enjoy the village in the soft, golden light of dawn.
Getting to Hongcun is convenient, whether you’re coming from nearby cities or further afield:
📍By Bus: If you're traveling from Huangshan City, you can take a direct bus from the Huangshan Long-Distance Bus Station to Hongcun. The journey is approximately 1.5 hours and offers scenic views along the way.
📍By Car: For those choosing to drive, the village is well-connected by road. From Huangshan City,it's about a 1.5-hour drive. Parking is available near the entrance of the village.
📍From Mount Huangshan: If you are combining your visit with a trip to the Huangshan Mountains, Hongcun is an easy and convenient stop. Direct buses from the Huangshan Scenic Area take approximately an hour.
In summary, Hongcun Village in Anhui Province offers an unparalleled blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. From the minute you set foot in this ancient village, you'll be transported back in time, surrounded by breathtaking architecture and tranquil landscapes that have inspired countless artists and filmmakers (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, anyone?).
Whether you're a history buff, an
architecture enthusiast - Hongcun is amazing! #architecture #ancientarchitecture
Mesmerizing Matera 🏛️
Matera, located in the Basilicata region of southern Italy, is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Famous for its ancient cave dwellings known as "Sassi," the city exudes a unique blend of history and culture that makes it an unforgettable destination.
Begin your exploration at the Sassi di Matera, a labyrinth of cave dwellings, narrow alleys, and centuries-old churches carved directly into the limestone rock. The Sassi are divided into two main districts: Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso, each with its own architectural wonders and breathtaking views. Guided tours provide fascinating insights into the caves' history and their former inhabitants.
Don't miss the chance to visit the rock-hewn churches of Matera. Santa Maria de Idris, perched high on a rocky outcrop, offers sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, while the nearby Crypt of Original Sin features remarkable frescoes that have earned it the nickname "Sistine Chapel of the Rupestrian Art."
Matera's Piazza Vittorio Veneto is the heart of the modern city, where you can enjoy local cuisine in family-run trattorias. Regional specialties include orecchiette pasta, lamb, and artisanal cheeses. Be sure to try Matera bread, a staple with a distinctive flavor that's tied to the region's ancient grain-growing traditions.
For a unique experience, consider staying in one of the renovated cave hotels, which blend historical authenticity with modern luxury. These boutique accommodations allow you to fully immerse yourself in the ancient atmosphere while enjoying contemporary comforts.
The best times to visit Matera are spring (April to June) and fall (September to October) when the weather is mild, and the crowds are smaller. Matera is also recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, so it's worth spending time exploring its rich historical heritage.
Matera’s blend of ancient architecture, stunning landscapes, and distinctive southern Italian culture makes it a captivating destination that reveals its hidden charms at every turn.

Phreah Vihear Temple
#2024wish
I just had an enchanted day to visit the beautiful temple called Phreah Vihear Temple. The highest temple was built on top of the mountain, and it felt like we stood in the sky.
The Preah Vihear Temple, located in the northern part of Cambodia, was built by King Yasovarmamn I (887–900) in the 6th century. The temple was a significant part of Khmer culture and was a significant part of the political and economic growth of the region. It underwent over 300 years of consultation and remodelling under King Suryavarman II (1113–1150), leading to its transformation into one of the greatest Khmer temples of all time.
The temple is situated on the edge of a giant cliff at about 625 meters above sea level in Preah Vihear Province, near the Cambodia-Thai border. It has four levels and four courtyards, including five Gopuras, which served as the king's residence and shelters for pilgrims. The main temple complex includes the front stone stairway, the Nagaraj Courtyard, and the first-level Gropura.
The stairheads are seven-headed snakes called "Ngu Suang," facing north towards the Prasat. The heads and tails of these snakes resemble ordinary snakes, with the head portion being made from a single solid stone. The first-level Gopura is a Greek architecture pavilion with a cross plan on an elevated, rebated angle base on each roof doorway.
The temple is open from 8.00 to 16.00 hours and offers a memorable experience with its grand site, ornate Gopuras, and a wealth of decorative detail. The temple's location and historical significance make it a must-see attraction for visitors to northern Cambodia.
I would recommend visiting the temple if you want the most antique piece that will make you enchanted by its wonderful construction with art. #phreahvihear #ancientarchitecture #historicallandmarks #triptravel
Koh Ker, Ancient city of khmer
#2024wish
I just had an enchanted day to visit the beauty temple on the way to Phras Vihea Temple. The pyramid-shaped temple, surrounded by a lot of big trees and thick rain forest, felt like we were going through ancient times.
Koh Ker, the capital of the Khmer Empire between 928 AD and 944 AD, is a lesser-known archaeological site located 120 km north-east of Siem Reap. It was once a bustling hub with over 10,000 inhabitants.
The site features a seven-tiered pyramid structure named Prang, which stands at 36 meters high. Visitors can enter through the imposing sandstone entrance pavilion and pass two laterite towers, now moss-covered ruins. The eastern side of the complex features meditation or prayer 'palaces' built for noble kings.
The western side of the complex is believed to be the state temple. A wooden staircase with handrails allows visitors to climb to all but the top tier. The seventh tier is believed to be where a plinth originally supported a four-meter-high linga honouring Hindu deity Shiva.
Due to the remoteness of the region, only a dozen ancient cities' 184 monuments are accessible to visitors. This makes Koh Ker feel like a secret, with fewer crowds and little tourist infrastructure.
To reach Koh Ker, arrange a private taxi from Siem Reap and drive 2.5 hours along scenic roads with cashew and banana plantations and rice fields. The Kulen mountain route can be combined with a visit to Koh Ker and Beng Mealea.
Inside the car park, there are restaurants, drink kiosks, and a few market stalls selling coconut drinks and souvenirs. There are no rest rooms at Koh Ker. Morning visits provide relief from the hot sun, and if combining with a visit to Beng Mealea, visit Koh Ker first to enjoy the cool weather.
During the quieter months of May to November, visitors can enjoy a more leisurely stroll around the site.
I would recommend visiting the temple if you want the most antique piece that will make you enchanted by its wonderful construction with art. #kohker #ancientarchitecture #oldestcity #mytravelhacks
a day trip on the Ancient Ruins of Ayutthaya
it was blazing hot that the sun’s heat will certainly prick your skins. But seeing these ancient ruins satisfies my history buff heart❤️
these temples and their story certainly fascinates me, the endless question of how can they built these things without the help of modern technology. the works of these artisan craftsmen is simply wonderful.
for the Ayutthaya day trip, make sure to bring umbrella, cap, sunglasses and sun block (lol which we didn’t bring any😂)

Watertown at Night!
Gubei Water Town is located on the northeast side of Miyun County in Beijing. This water town is about 2 hours drive from Beijing city. It is known for its northern architectural design and the culture and history of the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China historic period. Majority of the buildings in the town have been reconstructed using the traditional courtyard design. This Watertown has grown from just 5 ancient villages and a water source into a renowned holiday destination. There are lots of food and gorgeous little shops to visit. Night view is exceptional. I highly recommend to be there at night. We had a fabulous experience.

Gorgeous 12th century bridge
When visiting the old Town of Chaozhou is a good idea to be at this old bridge during sunset because in my opinion is when it looks the prettiest
There is a small fee to get into the bridge and see the boats closer, the interesting thing is that the bridge isn't compete by itself but made up by the smaller boats that arrived there, a very innovative way to collect the goods from other towns.
Which is your favorite picture?

ANCIENT EGYPT IN THE VATICAN
The obelisk that is visible in St. Peter's Square was taken by Caligula.
At the foot of Vatican Hill, Caligula, the Roman emperor, constructed a small circus where charioteers practised and where it is said that Nero executed Christians. Caligula had a pylon that had previously been in Heliopolis transported from Egypt by his troops to serve as the centerpiece of the amphitheater. Over 3,000 years ago, the obelisk was built for an Egyptian king out of a single piece of red granite that weighed more than 350 tons. It was transported to its current site in St. Peter's Square in 1586, where it serves as a massive sundial.

Huangqi Guanyin Ancient Temple - Dongguan
Huangqi Guanyin Ancient Temple - Shanmen, Dongguan. The particular reason to visit this place is the location of the temple, as it is located in Qifeng park in Dongguan.

CITY CENTRE OF ANCIENT ROME
Roman Forum, also known as Forum Romanum in Latin, was the most significant forum in ancient Rome. It was located on a flat area between the Capitoline and Palatine hills. In republican times, gladiatorial battles, law courts, and public gatherings all took place in the Roman Forum, which was also lined with stores and outdoor markets. Many of the city's most impressive temples and monuments were located there throughout the empire, when it primarily served as a hub for religious and secular performances and rituals.
The Cloaca Maxima, the Mamertine Prison, the Temple of Saturn, the Temple of Vesta, the Temple of Romulus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, and the Temple of the Deified Caesar are just a few of the buildings that have survived in whole or in part.

Charmingly Primitive Old Town in Shaoxing 🎋
Anchang Ancient Town is located in Shaoxing county, near Hangzhou’s Xiaoshan district. The waterway is narrow and strips across the town with old Chinese style houses on both sides. The town looks charmingly primitive with its old stone bridges, walkways and local specialties such as the yellow wine, Anchang sausages and soy sauce roasted duck.
It’s also a living area where I saw elders watching TV, playing majiang or preparing the town’s specials. I also spotted a cobbler at work 👞 For the first time, I saw boats rowed by feet🛶🦶There are also a bunch of restaurants, shops, teahouses and a Starbucks 🤭 The town isn’t overwhelmingly commercial which makes it a nice place to visit if you want to stroll around a place with a more traditional vibe of the Chinese lifestyle.

How to go ➡️ I joined a tour group which provided transport to the ancient town. I believe hiring a private driver or taking a taxi would be more convenient🙂

The 600-Year-Old City Wall Still Stands
History: "The largest city wall in the world is in Nanjing. The wall is over 32km long. It was built to defend the city against coastal pirates. The construction of the wall required the labor of 200,000 workers over 21 years to complete. This city was laid out in much the same pattern as Beijing; indeed Nanjing’s was the pattern for Beijing’s Forbidden City".
Now I'm sharing you the beautiful views from the top of the wall. The wall is something everyone should experience. It's quite a view up there and a great history of China.
