A Tranquil Stroll Through History: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu in Kamakura
#japantrip #travel #japan #solotrip #temple #spring #kamakura #shrine
Walking through Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine, is like stepping into a serene pocket of history. As I made my way up the grand stone stairway, I was greeted by breathtaking views of the shrine’s vermilion structures, framed by lush greenery and seasonal blooms. The peaceful Genpei Pond, lined with lotus flowers, offers a perfect spot to pause and take in the tranquil surroundings. Strolling along Wakamiya Oji, the tree-lined approach leading to the shrine, I found charming cafés and traditional sweet shops perfect for a mid-walk treat. If you’re looking for a peaceful escape from Tokyo’s fast pace, this historic shrine and its scenic surroundings offer a perfect city walk.
The Beloved Gion San — Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto's Gion District
The deity being enshrined at the Yasaka-jinja Shrine is Susanoo as its kami, amongst others. Kami refers to a deity or a supernatural power that is revered as god and inhabits in nature. The Yasaka-jinja Shrine was originally named Gion Shrine, dedicated to Shinto, which is considered a native faith in Japan.
Shinto is polytheistic and animistic. Worshippers practice the principles of purity, as shown in their cleaning rituals. Other rituals include dance, rites of passage and kami festivals. Followers of the faith will offer food and drinks to the deities, and priests officiated some of the shrines as well.
In Kyoto, the Gion Shrine was a beloved site for the locals. They call it Gion San, as an endearing name for the shrine. The site is very crowded during the New Years. Every year, the shrine holds the Migoshi Togyo, meaning the procession of the portable shrine, as the celebration of the Gion Festival. It takes place on the nights of July 17 and 24. On July 17, 3 Migoshi’s (the portable shrines) will be taken for display at Otabisho in downtown Kyoto. It is believed that these shrines carry the deities with them and will bless everyone on the way of the parade. After sitting in Otabisho for a week, the portable shrines return to Yasaka-jinja Shrine on July 24.
Perhaps what caught my attention at the Yasaka-jinja Shrine is a whole section of the shrine dedicated to romantic relationships (with matchmaking prayers). Daikoku-sha is where the faithful gather to pray for a good relationship with their loved ones.

The Incredible Atsuta Jingu Shrine, Nagoya’s historical gem 🏰 🇯🇵 🏯🗾
The Atsuta shrine is one of the biggest in Japan and is an iconic representation of the past, with al much of the country destroyed in WW2 this is a testament to Japans cultural heritage.
The shrine is set in a wooded area and there are lots of paths to walk around, lots of toilets along with a museum, gift shop and small cafe. There are areas to wash your hands before entering the shrine, it’s advised to do so to show respect.
There are places to buy little plaques to leave prayers and wishes, but it can be quite busy so be prepared for queues.
The main shrine itself is a very sacred place so you need to be aware that it is an active shrine, Japanese people come everyday to pray and wish for luck. Remember to show respect and keep your voice down, don’t use flash on your camera and do not take any photos of people using the shrine for its intended purpose.
head to Atsuta Jingu Nishi station and follow the signs.

Beautiful day at Lion Shrine Namba❤️
#japantrip
It is well-noud overseas because of the "Lion Hall" in the company, and has become the leader of small shrines in Osaka. The "Lion Hall" in the shrine is majestic and solemn. It has captured the hearts of countless tourists and made it stand out and become an "Internet celebrity" among the uniform shrines.
Compared with traditional Japanese shrines, this temple is particularly eye-catching and magical. Why was it built here?
Legend has it that there was an infectious disease rampant in ancient times. At that time, the people in the Namba area were deeply affected by it. Later, the god lion drove away the plague and protected the people. People offered it and let it sit here to defeat demons. At Yasaka Shrine, you will see many lion sculptures of different shapes, and even the outlet of the Mitarai near the main entrance is also in the shape of a lion. It can be seen that this shrine admires lions very much.
The Lion's Hall is 12 meters high and 11 meters wide. The open mouth is full of magical power, which can suck away people's bad luck and bring good luck.
It is less than a ten-minute walk from the Takashimaya Namba head office in the residential area. Friends who come to Takashimaya for shopping must not miss it.

Amanoiwato Shrine
A shrine revered by the people of Kyushu for generations. It is believed that the deity Amaterasu hid in this cave out of fear of the deity Susanoo, plunging the world into darkness. Later, Amaterasu was coaxed out by the other deities through festive activities in front of the cave, bringing light back to the world.
**Amanoiwato Shrine** (天岩戸神社, Amanoiwato-jinja) is a Shinto shrine located in Takachiho, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. This shrine holds significant importance in Japanese mythology as it is associated with the legend of the sun goddess **Amaterasu**. According to the legend, Amaterasu hid herself in a cave called **Amanoiwato** (meaning 'Heavenly Rock Cave') after being angered by her brother Susanoo. This event caused the world to be engulfed in darkness since she is the sun goddess. The other deities gathered outside the cave to devise a plan to lure her out, which involved the passionate dance of the goddess Ame-no-Uzume. Eventually, Amaterasu was drawn out, bringing light back to the world.
### Key Features of Amanoiwato Shrine:
- **Mythological Significance**: The shrine is built near the Amanoiwato cave, believed to be the hiding place of Amaterasu. The cave itself is not open to the public, but visitors can view it from a sacred observation point nearby, guided by the shrine's priests.
- **Sacred River**: Near the shrine is **Amano-Yasukawara**, a small cave by the Iwato River where the deities gathered to discuss how to bring Amaterasu out of the cave. It is a pilgrimage site where visitors leave stone piles as offerings.
- **Cultural Importance**: The shrine and its surroundings are considered one of the most sacred sites in Shinto, deeply connected to the origins of Shinto mythology.
Visitors to Amanoiwato Shrine are captivated by its spiritual atmosphere and unique place in the mythological creation stories of Japan.
I booked a flight to Fukuoka at noon with Trip.com. Got the ticket really fast.

🇵🇹 Sanctuary of the Christ of King ✝️
The Sanctuary of Christ the King is a Catholic monument and shrine located in Almada, the southern bank of Tagus River in Lisbon. The Catholic statue was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The monument was built after World War II and inaugurated in 1959.
This is probably the best place in Lisbon which offers stunning views of the 25 April Bridge which connects the city of Lisbon and Almada. The entrance ticket costs 8€ and allows you to take the lift to the top floor. From there you still have to climb a few flights of stairs to reach the observation deck where the statue of Jesus Christ is built. The viewpoint at the bottom of the monument also offers great views and walking on the ground surrounding the monument is completely free.

Taking in the infamous orange arches.
Fushimi Inari Taisha Senbon Torii (Thousands Torii Gate)
The orange gates at this shrine are recognised all around the world and it’s something you have to see to believe. There are thousands of these gates lining a walk way through the forest from the main shrine to the mountaintop.
The walk is a gradual slope with many tributes and mini shrines along the way, there’s so much to take in.
The main shrine at the foot of the mountain is intricate and beautiful, the orange is a stunning contrast against the green of the trees and blue if the sky.
The shrine is easily accessible with a metro stop right outside, only two stops to Kyoto main station. Or local taxis and Ubers drop off right at the door.
They offer guided tours for a few or you can scan QR codes along the trail for multi-lingual translations.
it can get very busy and it’s hard to get photos if you go late, we arrived by 8 and got a lot of the walkways to ourselves. Its best to head there early, beat the crowds then have a breakfast in one of the side streets after.

A peaceful pitstop near Harajuku
Togo-Jinja Shrine
This Shinto shrine is a perfect escape form the hustle and bustle of the surrounding streets, directly opposite Takeshita - Dori street.
The shrine is set in a small park area with a huge pond full of koi fish, there are wooden walkways over the water to take in the surroundings.
At the end of the walkways is the shrine, in a pebbled courtyard with trees and statues. The Shrine is a tribute to Marshal Admiral Togo of the Japanese navy and there are references to his success all around. There is a small museum and bookshop dedicated to his life and you’re able to donate a small tribute to leave a message on a wooden plaque.
The shrine is accessible from Harajuku station and is relatively quiet throughout the day, a great stop to pause and plan your next stops.

Meiji jinju shrine in Japan 🇯🇵
Meiji Shrine (明治神宮, Meiji Jingū) is a shrine dedicated to the deified spirits of Emperor Meiji and his consort, Empress Shoken. Located just beside the JR Yamanote Line's busy Harajuku Station, Meiji Shrine and the adjacent Yoyogi Park make up a large forested area within the densely built-up city. The spacious shrine grounds offer walking paths that are great for a relaxing stroll.
It’s free entrance and everyone entering must be respectful to the architecture and forest. You’ll need between 1-3 hours to visit. Inside there are places to worship or you can purchase a poem written by the emperor. It was a lovely stroll and I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Tokyo. #urbanexplorer #forest #shrine #japan #tripblazers #hikingtrails
one of the must visit places in Japan - Itsukushima Shrine
Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto shrine on Miyajima Island which is near Hiroshima. It is best known for its big floating torii gate .
Miyajima can be reached by ferry from Hiroshima or from Miyajimaguchi- which is faster. after getting off at Miyajima guchi train station, simply walk toward the ferry pier. On the weekend there is often a large crowd so following them would likely lead you to the ferry terminal.
There are two ferry companies running ferries between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima; the JR ferry and the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen. Both have large passenger ferries and costs ¥360 round trip for the 10 minutes ride. there are four ferries per hour between 8-6pm, and less frequent schedules in the early and evening hours.
After arriving to the island, turn right and walk for 10-15 minutes to reach the shrine. Weekends are particularly busy with tourists so getting there early would help.
There are also many deer roaming around so beware of not feeding them with food- they will follow you!
It is best to reserve 4-5 hours to leisurely walk around the Shrine and the island. if you have time , a few more hours would be even better to walk further, and enjoy a lunch or tea , or even grilled oysters!

1368 steps to the inner shrine of Kotohira -gu
Kotohira shrine in Kagawa prefecture in Shikoku is a shrine dedicated to sailors and seafarers. It is situated at 521 m - halfway to the top of Mount Zozu.
The journey starts from the Kotohira town where there is a row of souvenir shops and restaurants, and it will gradually go uphill with a long stretch of stairs. There is a large tori at the entrance of Kotohira- gu, while the two sides stood many stone pillars marking the “millions “ of yen contributed to the shrine over the years.
There were many large and small shrines as we walked up the long flight of stairs, and we made our first stop at 477 steps where there were two beautiful white horses that werr 14 and 18 years old. There was also a cafe at 500 steps but it was already closed when we arrived.
Our next stop was the Main Shrine at 785 steps. The view of the nearby towns and fields from there was quite spectacular! However as it was closed to 5pm we noticed the workers started to close some of the windows of the shrine. Just as we were about to start uphill again, we were told that the premise gate will close by 6pm, and we should start to go downhill. As much as we wanted to reach the top, we couldn’t make it this time.
If you are planning to complete the whole journey uphill, I would recommend to start from 2 or 3 pm latest as there are many interesting things to see and photos to be taken. You would also want to take your time to walk slowly and rest from time to time. There is no admission fee to visit Kotohira gu.

Nagoya's most sacred Shrine ⛩
#wecreate
This place, shine, temple, garden, space out of our time line is located in Nagoya, a not so visited city of Japan compared with others, but it does have some of the most impressive places that I saw during my last visit.
The Atsura Jingu was built around 1900 years ago, and currently is the most sacred place in the city. Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi sword being one of imperial Japan religia makes this shrine it's home.
After a walk by its gardens we had some traditional Eel just a few minutes walking from it. Very special and unique place to be.

Udo Jingu, a shrine inside a cave, was the highlight of my Miyazaki trip. Due to its location in the lower levels of the rocks, there were numerous stairs to navigate along the way. Thankfully, the weather was excellent on the day of my visit, and the seaside scenery was stunning.
Initially, I believed that the shrine was the only attraction to see, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover the nearby rock formations. This unexpected find was a great addition to my already enjoyable experience.
