A Gem in the Heart of History
#funchal #madeira Our stay at Barcelo Old Town Funchal was nothing short of extraordinary. This hotel stands as the best in the Old Town, housed within a historical building that seamlessly blends tradition with modernity. The rooms are a testament to contemporary comfort within a historic setting.
The crowning jewel of this stay was undoubtedly the rooftop pool, the only one in the Old Town. The panoramic view it offered was beyond words, providing a breathtaking perspective of Funchal. The overall experience was simply indescribable and highly recommended. We were thoroughly impressed and enchanted by our time there.
Funchal’s Variety and Food, Do you need more?
When visiting Madeira one place that’s worth staying and has the majority of hotels on the island is Funchal. Funchal has great variety having cable carts, gardens, food, boat tours, island tours and much more.
The Terrain of Funchal is very unique and extremely steep so be prepared to either pay for taxis or experience a very steep walk that only few cities in the world offer.
The old town in Funchal is fantastic and home to the majority of unique street art that is very thought provoking and intriguing allowing you to get lost in the streets soaking in the culture.
When in Funchal though one thing you must do is look and explore the city at night, the way the city lights up is breathtaking and represented in the last photo. Seeing all the lights from businesses or houses climbing up the hillside is something you don’t get in many locations and an experience.

Exploring The Art of Open Doors in Funchal
The Art of Open Doors in Funchal’s Zona Velha is an outdoor gallery featuring vibrant paintings on old town doors, blending creativity with local culture. Wander through Rua de Santa Maria to admire the murals, each telling a unique story. This is a part of the Madeirian culture, where ancient villages paint their doors with what they have.
Travel Tip: Visit early morning to avoid crowds and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Photo Tip: Capture full doors straight-on to showcase the artwork’s symmetry, or zoom in on interesting details like textures or patterns.#portugal #madeira #thingstodo #travel #staycation #funchal
Exotic and dangerous fruits in Madeira
I have tried some exotic fruits in Funchal, Madeira. My reviews:
- Monstera deliciosa tastes like soursop with tingling after sensation. I guess soursop is what people associate with the combination of banana and pineapple taste. Be careful that it is dangerous to eat the unripe part.
- Banana passionfruit tastes like banana but less sweet and more sour. The seeds are harder than the normal passionfruit.
- Granadilla is basically sweet passionfruit with less flavor.
- Surinam cherry is like a cross between cherry tomato, cherry, and lime with a huge seed in the middle.
- Yellow pittaya or dragon fruit is a sweeter variety of dragon fruit.

A nice dinner at local seafood restaurant
I was craving for some fresh seafood for being so close to the sea. we walked down Santa Maria street and found many seafood restaurants. Taberna Ruel caught our eyes and it was the only restaurant that was full inside and outside. So, we asked for a table and ordered octopus carpaccio for the appetizer and fish shellfish cataplana for the main. They were very delicious and it was a great night!
