This is definitely a must see in Dujiangyan. We booked through the WeChat mini program thanks to the help of our hotel, and thank God we did it! We ordered a DiDi early in the morning, and were the first ones waiting to enter. A few minutes later, two more people arrived, and then several bus bus tours arrived, and it quickly went to chaos. If you don't have your tickets, you can buy it there, but you'll have to queue to get tickets (only opens when the base opens, not before) and then queue behind the ones who already have tickets. We could see people were ready to fight, which explained the board asking people to not fight and act civilized. Don't take me wrong, we're civilized, but we were ready to fight if needed (people pushed and try to cut in line, but we stand our ground and told them off). We finally entered, first, and managed to enjoy some quietness before the groups reached us a dozen minutes later. What we saw made us feel blessed, we felt lucky to see this endemic and endangered species so close. There's no protective glass, so you can see the pandas well. They were very active in the morning as it was cool outside. They're so goofy, it's so cute and funny to witness. There was some panels giving you the names and telling you more about each panda, which was kind of cute. However, it did lack a bit of explanations as to what is done to help for conservation. I liked the fact that there are security guards around the enclosure who won't hesitate to tell people off when they are too loud. We strolled for hours, the park is small, so you can walk around, observing the kids pandas playing with their mother, or the big boys eating and enjoying their meal. Bear in mind it is in a natural environment so it can be quite hot/humid, bring water with you and stay hydrated 💦 Please, remember that these animals are endangered, take good care of them when visiting, don't call them, don't give them food, don't be loud. During a visit to Chengdu, I took a day trip with family friends out to Dujiangyan 都江堰, one of the oldest and longest surviving irrigation systems in the world. The views were very scenic - you have mountains, rivers, temples, old bridges, and plenty of street vendors around. It was also a great learning opportunity to educate ourselves on how this area got started. Dujiangyan is a small city next to Chengdu (1h drive) and we stayed at some local hotel just for a night. Qingcheng mt is nearby, 20min by taxi and entrance to a big park is free. You can use sightseeing bus to entrance, but it's just a 25min walk to ticket office. Save some money. To visit all temples and pagoda on top, price is 80rmb. And then climbing starts...stairs, stairs and more stairs. Highly recommend Cable car return ticket (60rmb). Saving you around 2km of climbing. Plenty of small fast food and beverage stores, but pricey. Coke is 10rmb, some pies go to 25rmb. So better get some snacks and water before. On the top is amazing view on mountains, city and lake. Summer season isn't best option cuz of noisy cicadas every step of the way. The Dujiangyan (Chinese: 都江堰) is an ancient irrigation system in Dujiangyan City, Sichuan, China. Originally constructed around 256 BC by the State of Qin as an irrigation and flood control project, it is still in use today. More than 2000 years of history. The system's infrastructure develops on the Min River (Minjiang), the longest tributary of the Yangtze. The area is in the west part of the Chengdu Plain, between the Sichuan Basin and the Tibetan Plateau. Originally, the Min would rush down from the Min Mountains and slow down abruptly after reaching the Chengdu Plain, filling the watercourse with silt, thus making the nearby areas extremely prone to floods. King Zhao of Qin commissioned the project, and the construction of the Dujiangyan harnessed the river using a new method of channeling and dividing the water rather than simply damming it. The water management scheme is still in use today to irrigate over 5,300 km2 of land in the region. During the Warring States period, people who lived along the banks of the Min River were plagued by annual flooding. After the system was finished, no more floods occurred.
