🏯 I Visited Matsumoto Castle, and It Felt Like Stepping Back in Time 🌸
Nestled in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, Matsumoto Castle (松本城) is a stunning blend of history and beauty. As one of Japan’s most iconic original castles, it’s also affectionately known as the “Crow Castle” for its striking black exterior. Visiting Matsumoto Castle isn’t just about seeing an architectural gem—it’s about immersing yourself in Japan’s feudal past.
🌟 What Makes Matsumoto Castle Special?
* Authentic History: Built in the late 16th century, this National Treasure has retained its original wooden interiors and stone foundations. Climbing its steep stairs feels like walking in the footsteps of samurai. 🛡️
* Scenic Beauty: The castle is surrounded by a tranquil moat and offers spectacular views of the Japanese Alps in the background. In spring, the cherry blossoms transform the grounds into a dreamy pink wonderland. 🌸⛰️
* Night Illumination: If you visit in the evening, the castle is beautifully lit, creating a magical reflection on the water. 🌙
🎟️ Admission Info:
* Castle Entry: ¥700 for adults, ¥300 for children. The fee also includes access to the Matsumoto City Museum, located nearby.
🗺️ Getting There:
* By Train: From Nagano, take the JR Shinano Limited Express to Matsumoto Station, then walk 15 minutes to the castle. 🚶♀️🚆
* By Bus: Local buses from Matsumoto Station stop near the castle grounds.
💡 Tips for Visiting:
1. You will have to take off your shoes in the castle so make sure you’ve got comfortable socks as it gets quite cold especially in winter. 🥾
2. Visit during cherry blossom season in April or the autumn foliage season for the most stunning views. 🍂
3. Try local specialties like soba noodles or wasabi-flavored treats while in Matsumoto—perfect for a post-tour snack! 🍜
My trip to Matsumoto Castle was more than just sightseeing—it was a journey through Japan’s rich feudal history, surrounded by natural beauty. Whether you’re a history buff or simply love breathtaking views, this castle is a must-visit.

Matsumoto.
A city of tranquility with many cafes. It's not very busy here, and you can either walk or cycle around. There are rental bikes available along the way. When I visited, there were few people.
The advantage is that there are buses to various cities easily, whether to Shinjuku (Tokyo) or Kamikochi. You can also go to Hakuba. It's a great hub for traveling.
Walking around the city, there are old temples and a relaxed atmosphere.

Matsumoto castle 松本城
Matsumoto castle is one of the 12 existing castle towers. Their towers were constructed before Edo period, over 400 years ago. It is probably the nearest castle of that kinds from Tokyo.
The closet station is Matsumoto Station , which is 150 minutes from Tokyo Shinjuku Station. In addition, it is about 20 minutes from Matsumoto Station.
Not only its tower but also cherry blossom trees there are so popular.

Togakushi shrine @Nagano
One of our memorable places visiting Japan this time. I based at Matsumoto to have a day trip to Kamikochi as we didn't want to change hotel so often. So I looked up and found this place. It takes 1-hour train ride from Matsumoto to Nagano station. Take another bus ride to get us to Togakushi upper shrine and BAMM! A nice stroll to Togakushi shrine with 400-year-old Cedar tree.
