Timeless Delight: Traditional Awamochi at Sawaya
#getgoing2025
Awamochi-dokoro Sawaya in Kyoto is a true taste of history. This sweet shop has been serving its signature awamochi since the Edo period, and it’s clear they’ve perfected their craft.
The menu is simple but flawless, offering just two options: kinako (toasted soybean flour) or koshi-an (smooth red bean paste).
I tried both, and they were heavenly—the soft, slightly chewy texture of the awamochi pairs perfectly with the toppings.
The shop’s location near Kitano Tenmangu Shrine makes it an ideal stop after sightseeing. If you’re looking for an authentic and delicious Kyoto experience, you can’t miss Sawaya!
