#ChefFēi is a Chinese restaurant that I didn't expect at all. I happened to walk past it and it was dinner time because I hadn't eaten anything all day. I just noticed after walking past it once that there were a lot of locals eating at this restaurant and there were hardly any foreigners. Then I saw a sign guaranteeing that it had won some kind of award, something like an Iron Chef competition or something like that, so I decided to tell my friends to try it. I happened to have one queue in line, so I decided to go. In conclusion, I would like to say that you will definitely regret not trying it because everything is delicious!!! It is a really delicious Chinese restaurant. You won't be disappointed. The taste of the food is spicy and goes well with hot rice that they serve in a whole pot!!! If you find this restaurant anywhere, don't forget to stop by and eat. In all considerations, the Tai Kwun has retired into an age of glory by now. Tai Kwun is the former Central Police Station that operated during the early colonial days until the 2000’s. Standing as a revitalized cultural space consisting of three declared monuments, Tai Kwun presents the public with an opportunity to revisit a part of Hong Kong history that was once ridden with the unpleasantries of a sometimes-unjust system of justice. In 1841 when Britain formally took over Hong Kong, the Colonial Government set up the Hong Kong Police Force. The first “police station” in Hong Kong was a mere mat-shed shelter on a site next to what would become Tai Kwun in Central. Tai Kwun, meaning “the big police station,” served as the headquarters for law enforcement between the late 19th century and the Second World War. It became the regional headquarters for Hong Kong Island after the war, as it was also the police station for the Central district. With its decommission in 2004, it stepped down from its former role as a law enforcement institute. In Tai Kwun there are about 20 blocks of buildings that served various functions in the former Central Police Station. In my opinion, there are four must-see structures. As three of them are declared monuments, they are representative of the collective history of Tai Kwun. Facing Hollywood Road is the Central Police Station. Now serving mostly as a space of exhibitions displaying aspects of Hong Kong’s local history and culture, the Police Headquarters Block stands grand and stately as what might be the most eye-catching architecture in this part of Central. The Central Magistracy was the first building in Tai Kwun’s ensemble of former law enforcement agencies. Built in 1841, the year that the British took over Hong Kong as its colony, the Central Magistracy was an indispensable arm of colonial administration as the “busiest court of justice” that tried more than three million people. Known as the Victoria Gaol in the earliest days, the Victoria Prison was a structure of 1842 as the longest-running prison in Hong Kong’s history. An intriguing fact that I learned at the Tai Kwun was that Ho Chi Minh, the most significant statesman and founder of communist Vietnam, had once been kept in the Victoria Prison. Steeped in historic vibes, the Barrack Block is also a beautiful structure with a neoclassical façade. The official name of Tai Tau Chau is the Shek O Headland Picnic Area. It is an islet off of the Shek O Headland, with rocky shores and all-around views of the seas and the hilly terrain in northeast Shek O. It takes only about 20 minutes to walk from the Shek O bus stop to reach the islet. I spent about an hour walking leisurely on all the paths in the islet. I even sipped takeout coffee on a high point overlooking Ng Fun Chau (see below). The islet is indeed perfect for picnic. I do not know why the Blue Bridge of Tai Tau Chau is known locally as the Lover’s Bridge. The descriptions on-site suggest that because the blue color (it does seems like baby blue) is romantic, and that the bridge is only wide enough for two people, it came to be known as the Lovers’ Bridge. In any event, the Blue Bridge is very photogenic, as it sets a bright human touch upon the nature-themed colors of Tai Tau Chau. The Blue Bridge connects the Shek O Headland area to Tai Tau Chau. In 2018, super typhoon Mangkut destroyed the bridge. It was only finally and functionally restored in 2021. I am very glad that I get to visit Tai Tau Chau and walk through this bridge on this visit. As I walked around the islet, I noticed beautiful rock formations everywhere. The rocks that make up Tai Tau Chau are granites. Granites are a kind of volcanic rock. The first inhabitants in this small windswept island on the eastern waters of Hong Kong were of Hakka origin. The ancestor Chan Meng-tak came from Changle in Guangdong and first settled down in the salt fields of Sha Tau Kok. He then came to Sai Kung. The early villagers have inhabited this island as early as 1670. They took on farming, livestock rearing, fishing and salt-making as their trade. The Chinese character “tsai” in the island’s name means “homeland,” eliciting the idea that one must not forget his roots. During the mid-19th century, foreign missionaries set foot in the island. They established the church in the island and the islanders all turned to Christianity. This explains the absence of a Tin Hau Temple (or ancestral halls) on the island, and instead the existence of the St. Joseph’s Chapel. The Industrial History of Hong Kong Group claims that salt production was Hong Kong’s oldest industry. It is far older than the first settlement of Hong Kong’s indigenous clans. It is also far older than the other two ancient industries that Hong Kong was known for, incense wood production and pearl fishing. The salt trade was the lifeline for Yim Tin Tsai’s villagers for two hundred years. However, about one hundred years ago, the village’s salt trade slowly declined. They faced intense competition from cheaper salt exports from mainland China and Vietnam. With the advance of better transportation, the tax collector was able to visit the island to collect tax. The salt trade was no longer profitable. By the 1920s, the salt pans in Yim Tin Tsai have all but disappeared. The most amazing is the illustration of the salt’s crystalline structure by the staff. When you look closely at the salt, you see clearly that it comes in an interesting two-square structure. There are diagonal lines connecting the four corners of the outer square and the four corners of the inner square. There are two pieces of artwork on the island that drew inspiration from this very special crystalline shape of the salt. I was staying at the Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel (Mojia Dayuan, meaning the mansion of the Mo’s). It lies on the southern edge of the ancient town. At this location, the three sub-streams of the Yao river converge. The Dayuan Culture Theme Hotel is an antique building itself. Originally the building belonged to the Mo clan. In the old times, the villagers referred to it as Xianshan Study. During the times of New China, the government had used the building as a warehouse storage for food. The house was built in the traditional style of siheyuan, which was a very popular building format, particularly in Beijing, for the thousands of years. Buildings are built on all four sides of a courtyard. This format was usually built to give home to large multigenerational households. The building’s foundation was made of bluestones (limestones) and it took five years just to lay the foundation. In 2008, the government handed this building back to the Mo’s.
