Bogd Khan Palace Museum also known as Winter Palace of the Bogd Khan is a historic complex that used to be the winter residence of Mongolia’s last king, Bogd Khan. Getting There - You can hire a taxi but I got there on foot but it is a long distance from main city. Highlights - The museum is the main highlight and it features various temples and the king’s residence. It showcases traditional Mongolian architecture and Buddhist art. You can also see many of the furniture from the past and items used by Bogd Khan. There is a rich collection of artefacts like religious relics, and gifts to the Bogd Khan. The place offers a glimpse into Mongolia's history and cultural heritage. Getting there - You can hire a taxi but I got there on foot but it is a long walk. Highlights - 1. Zaisan Memorial Highlights - The memorial is located in a hill overlooking Ulaanbaatar. This is built as a tribute to Soviet soldiers who fought alongside Mongolians during World War II. The memorial has a large circular mural depicting scenes of friendship between the Soviet Union and Mongolia. 2. Zaisan Hill Highlights - Zaisan hill offers panoramic views of the city. At the top is Zaisan Memorial. Climb up the steps to the top and be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and the surrounding landscape like the Tuul river. 3. Zaisan Mall Highlights - This is a very modern shopping mall linked to Zaisan hill. This is the best folk and cultural performance I have ever watched. This is presented by the Tumen Ekh Ensemble in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. Tumen Ekh Ensemble is a renowned traditional Mongolian performance group known for showcasing the Mongolia's rich cultural heritage through music, dance, and throat singing. Address - WW78+3C5, SBD - 1 khoroo, Ulaanbaatar 14241, Mongolia Highlights - First highlight was throat singing, which is a unique technical skill and the musician paired this with horse fiddle. Next, the highly skilled contortionists performed some epic acrobatics and showcased their exceptional flexibility. Also, I really enjoyed the folk dances and dramatic singing, where story telling was woven in and truly displayed the nomadic traditions and culture of Mongolia. Rating - 10/10. Sükhbaatar Square is the main central square in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia. It is a must-visit when in Ulaanbaatar to experience local vibes and culture. Highlights - This is a vibrant central square and filled with locals dressed with beautiful traditional clothing. Usually, there are important ceremonies held in the Government Palace right in the centre. In the palace, you can also see huge statues of Genghis Khan, Ögedei Khan and Kublai Khan. Another important highlight is the equestrian statue of Sukhbaataar, a revolutionary leader. The square is filled with beautifully bloomed flowers. You can see many important buildings in the country around the square like the State Ballet and Opera House and Central Cultural Palace Building. Hotels - There are many hotels including premium ones near the square. Chinggis Khan statue complex has a towering equestrian statue on top and also a museum inside. Getting There - I hired a local guide/ driver to go there, it is about 50km from Ulaanbaatar. Highlights - 1. Equestrian statue of Chinggis Khan This statue is 40m tall made out of steel, and is the tallest equestrian statue in the world. 2. Underground Museum This was a very interesting museum to learn about Mongolian history and culture, such as the different leaders of Mongol empire and where they conquered. 3. Top of the complex observation deck Go all the way up to the too to take a close up photo with the statue, and also get a panoramic view of the vast grasslands around the complex. Simply breathtaking! 4. Gobi desert is such a fascinating place and nature wonder with so much to explore! One of the best sunsets and night skies I have seen in the world is in the Gobi Desert during a trip to Mongolia. Getting There - You will need to hire a driver and local guide as you need their expert navigation skills. There are no roads or signs in the desert. Highlights - There is so much to explore in Gobi Desert including unique cliff and sand dune formations. You will also be able to see the most perfect sunset in the endless desert against the blue skies. This is a different travel experience. Once the sun sets, you will be able to see infinite stars in the night sky. I was able to see the galaxy and constellations so clearly. It is simply breathtaking, especially with the deafening silence in the desert. Accomodation - I stayed in a tourist camp, inside a traditional Mongolian ger. Tsagaan Suvarga (White Stupa) is a very beautiful cliff that has rainbow colours in Gobi Desert Mongolia Getting There - I went there with a local tour guide and driver who is highly skilled at driving. You can visit this as part of a tour to Gobi desert. Attractions - White stupa is a stunning natural limestone formation. First see the the beautiful rainbow cliffs from the top to get a full panoramic view. Then you can drive downwards into the cliffs and experience them upclose. You can see a stark contrast against the surrounding desert landscape. Accomodations - You can stay at a tourist camp in the area. They usually come with good toilet and showering facilities. I stayed at Gobi Erdene whitch is really nice. Getting There - You should hire a local driver and tour guide to get the best experience. Navigation in the desert is a whole new story as there are no roads or signs. Highlights - Khongor Sand Dunes is also known as the "Singing Dunes". It is a stunning natural wonder in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert. The highlight includes the towering golden sand peaks. It is called the singing dunes because of the melodic sounds created by shifting sands when the strong winds blow. Take time to climb all the way up to the sand peaks and get panoramic views of the entire desert. You can also have fun sliding down and sinking into the smooth desert sand. Another highlight is riding a camel and getting a tour of the desert. Watch as these amazing camels adapt so well in deserts and strong winds. Accomodations - There are two kinds of accomodations for camping here, one is tourist camps which have toilets and showers. Or you can get a truly local experience by staying with a nomadic family in their ger. Central Mongolia is a place rich in culture and of course, it has breathtaking landscapes and steppes. Getting There - I went to Central Mongolia area with a local driver and tour guide part of my tour. Attractions - 1. Erdene Zuu Monastery This is the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. You can check out the unique architecture style of tibetian buddhist temples. There is a golden stupa outside the temple. 2. Karakorum This used to be the capital of Mongol empire in the 1200s. You can visit the museum here to learn about history of ancient Mongolia and Mongol empire. This is part of the World Heritage site of Orkhon valley. Accomodation - Part of the highlight is staying in the traditional Mongolian ger (yurt). Camping experience was one of a kind and very traditional. There are tourist camps here with toilets. Hustai National Park is a stunning national park in Mongolia. It has breathtaking landscapes and grasslands and is home to the endangered Przewalski's horses. Getting There - Recommend joining a tour or hiring a driver/guide as the park is way too big and you need the expert navigation skills of locals. Highlights - Firstly, admire the vast grasslands and see the eagles soaring in the perfectly blue sky. You will get to experience the pristine wilderness. Next, the most fun part was driving around trying to spot the endangered Przewalski's horses. But our best attempt was to see them from a distant through binoculars. Also, you will get to see some other wildlife like marmots and vultures in the reserve. Accomodation - You cannot camp within the national park as it is a protected area. But there is a big ger camp at the park entrance. Altai Tavan Bogd Mountain is a part of Altai Tavan Bogd National Park and is a dream travel destination for trekkers, mountaineers, wildlife lovers, and nature lovers. Not only nature, but the surrounding area is also home to various ethnic groups and historical sites. The highest peak of the mountain is snowcapped Khuiten Peak (4374 m), the highest point of Mongolia. Last year we decided to visit Mongolia during the spring season (to be exact, in May 2023 for 10 days). It was a long journey but it was worth it. Ulaanbaatar met us as a modern city with rich culture, and people, and with a windy weather. We've booked a room in Best Western Premier Tuushin Hotel. The view was amazing. The staff was welcoming. We've seen the gargantuan Genghis Khan monument, The Gandantegchinlen Monastery, The Zaisan Monument and the panoramic view of Ulaanbaatar, The Aryapala Temple and so much more. If I'm going to describe every place of our journey there won't be enough space. Before our trip, Mongolia was a mysterious place. It was calling for us. I have never heard about Shambhala until we arrived in Ulaanbaatar. It was quite a lengthy journey to this mythical place. The first thing we saw was this little building with sleepy eyes and a question mark. We have been told if you look into these eyes, the dot in the center will move, like during hypnosis. And you might see some things regarding your future. Unfortunately, we were exhausted, and none of us could stop and stare since we had our daughter with us. So, this building was an entrance to the world of Shambhala. It was surrounded with these white blocks. It was quite peaceful there. People were lying on the ground inside of a circle that was made from red rocks. We have been told that they were taking energy from mother earth. We decided to to the same and the first thing we saw was the Sun at its zenith with a halo. It was an unforgettable experience. We drove through the steppes from The Shambhala to Khan Bayanzurkh Mountain, the sacred, special place. Its land is soaked in the buddhist rituals. There were cashmere goats roaming around the mountain to get food from people, I guess. Our guide suggested that we should write our wishes on a piece of paper, as if they have come true. We went to a little joss paper furnace to burn our letters. And then we continued our mountain hike. But there was one thing, that only men can reach the top of it, women and girls should stay in the middle of the mountain. I immediately thought it was sexist but, hey, it's different culture, different religion and we, as guests should respect it. Nevertheless, we had a wonderful time. The scenery was breathtaking. It is a marvel to see - winding river bed, grazing horses and cattle, eagles flying in search for a pray. Solo trekking through the Tengger Desert in Inner Mongolia. This was a surreal, unreaĺ, immensely difficult task but remains one of my proudest accomplishments to date Located in the far Northwest of China the Tengger Desert is a vast empty area of wilderness there is nothing around except for desolate sand. However this doesn't mean it's without charm. It's actually nice in it's own way. With a real sense of nature. Khalkhgol (Mongolian: Халхгол, meaning Khalkha river) is a sum (district) of Dornod Province in eastern Mongolia. There are 3,203 people in the sum, including 1,756 in the sum center. The area of the sum is 28,093 km², with a population density of 0.11 people/km². The largest sum in Mongolia by land area. I was there last April, 2022 in a business trip. You can't get services in this area, but you can see attractions with memories of the 1939 Battle. This sum is bordering Mongolia and has no access to neighboring countries. Therefore, it is a remote sum with poor infrastructure development. What I have observed is that the soft power of the Russian Federation actually exists in the behavior of people and the design of buildings. To reach this district, you have to travel about 150 km of dirt roads. Attractions: - Khalkhgol Victory Museum (for Foreigners approx 5$) - Victory statues (nearby to Sum center) - War shells - Bombarded lands and holes Hotel: - There are a few Hostels which is not costly - Personally I suggest to stay-in local guest houses (ask your guide for local guest houses) Finally, Mongolians are much more friendly peoples then you think, especially in countryside. Yes, believe it or not these places are still inside Mainland China! Located a few kilometers from the Russian border, Manzhouli is a tiny city with great personality. It is a mix of three countries: China, Russia, and Mongolia; becoming quite the urban city along the years. It shares borders with Xing’anling on the east, Hulun Lake on the south, Mongolia on the west and Russia to the north. 🇨🇳 🇷🇺 🇲🇳 Manzhouli is also home to China’s century-old and busiest land port, hence it’s known regionally as "the Window of Eastern Asia". We visited in mid-July and although the days were nice and sunny, we were definitely not prepared for the nights. Temperatures would drop drastically after sunset and winter coats (which we found at a little street stand for ¥100) came in very handy! When in Manzhouli, you cannot miss Matryoshka Square: the only one of its kind in China, with features that combine all three cultures. The square displays over 200 oversized Matryoshka dolls, which are also known as nesting dolls. The dolls have a wide variety of figures painted on them in many styles. They have Russian, Chinese, and Mongolian girls painted on the outside of some. The largest one is about 30 meters tall. This massive doll holds the Guinness World Record for the largest Matryoshka doll in the world. Inside of it, there is a hotel, Russian cuisine restaurant, and a performance hall. At night, there are singing and dancing performances in the square by foreigners, along with fireworks. Of course, gift shops all around. 🎁💸 Around Manzhouli you can also visit Hulun Lake and an interesting, small (but most of all random) theme park. There are life-sized mammoth statues all around, old school rollercoasters, a big Ferris wheel, and bumper cars. Plus a beautiful Russian style building that seemed to be completely empty and abandoned! 😂 It’s good fun since there is not much else to do. The night life pretty dead, sadly. We roamed around a lot looking for places to eat and have a drink, but at around 10pm, all the street lights were off and finding a cab was a hassle. On the banks of the Tuul River, which is 54 km east of Ulaanbaatar, there is a majestic forty-meter statue of Genghis Khan sitting on a horse - the tallest equestrian statue in the world. There are 36 columns around it, symbolizing 36 khans who headed Mongolia after Genghis Khan. The statue of Genghis Khan is considered one of the nine wonders of Mongolia and the main symbol of the state. For the entire Mongolian people, this monument is of great importance, because for them Genghis Khan is the person from whom the history of the nation begins. The monument to Genghis Khan is more than just a statue. It is installed on a round base with a diameter of 30 meters and a height of 10 m. Plus, the equestrian statue itself is hollow and consists of two floors. Inside the complex there are several interesting objects that are definitely worth a visit. The pedestal housed a historical museum dedicated to the Mongol khans; a huge map on which you can trace all the conquests of the great Genghis Khan; art Gallery; conference hall; several restaurants; souvenir shop. The opening of the monument, which took 250 tons of stainless steel, took place in 2008 after three years of construction. To date, the statue of Genghis Khan is one of the most popular attractions in Mongolia. The place where the huge steel Genghis Khan rises on the hill has its own history associated with the great warrior. According to legend, it is here that the history of the Mongol Empire as a whole begins. In 1177, the young Temujin, who in the future took the name of Genghis Khan, discovered a golden whip on the top of a hill, which symbolized good luck. For Temujin, this find was a sign that the gods favor him in fulfilling his dream of uniting the Mongols scattered around the nomadic tribes. He fulfilled his plan: in 1206, the Great Mongol Empire was formed by his forces, and a copy of the famous golden whip can still be seen inside the base of the statue. In addition to the whip in the tourist complex, the visitor is invited to take the elevator to the observation deck located in the head of Genghis Khan's horse. Last fall I visited the eagle hunters of Mongolia. This felt like one of the last remote places on this planet. It takes almost a week to get to them and once there you are far from any phone signal, city or anything looking like normal civilisation. I stayed in their tents and joined them hunting during the day. They own almost nothing but are still super happy and enjoy life fully.
