Escape the crowds
Plitvice Lakes National park is one of the most popular tourist sites in Croatia and there’s definitely good reason for that with the national splendour of the waterfalls crashing through the forest a must see sight for anyone visiting the country.
However, at the height of summer crowds at the lower end of the park can become very overwhelming and for those seeking a more tranquil experience that may seem hard to find.
There is an answer though, you should head towards the upper lakes where the same beautiful natural world is still there to inspire you, but you can enjoy it in a far more serene environment. #lakes #waterfalls #croatia

If you are in Split, the Bell Tower of St. Domnius is worth visiting at least once. Climbing to the top is an adventure in itself, with narrow stone stairs adding a touch of thrill to the journey. However, the effort is well worth it, as your reward is a breathtaking panoramic view of Split. From the summit, you can admire the terracotta rooftops, the bustling streets of Diocletian’s Palace, and the shimmering Adriatic Sea stretching into the horizon. The sight of nearby islands and Marjan Hill completes the picture-perfect scene. Just remember to wear comfortable shoes for the climb—it’s an experience you won’t want to miss!

Croatia is located at the junction of Western, Central and Southern Europe and has many karst terrains (limestone terrain).

Also known as Plitvice Lakes National Park
A national park famous for its lakes, alpine forests, waterfalls, caves, and hiking trails.
Certified by UNESCO in 1979❗
There is also a UNESCO stone monument at the entrance of the park. Remember to take a photo to commemorate your visit to Plitvice Lakes❗
This beautiful national park is maintained regularly, and the water quality is super clear. Walking and hiking by the charming lake while looking at the green water is actually one of the great enjoyments of life.
The photos you take casually are either reflection photos or unique scenery photos~
This place was also selected by CNN as one of the 15 secret places in the world that must be visited in life👍
I thought it was going to be very cold but it got hotter as I walked. It took me two hours to walk. Because I had to keep walking, I was sweating by the end and even took off my scarf.
I especially choose to come at the end of October because I want to enjoy the beauty of the maple leaves at the same time😘👍
Fortunately, we can both walk to Shanghu (waterfall area) and Lower Lake area. The journey takes about 4 and a half hours.
You really have to see it with your own eyes to know the beauty of this place☺️

A hidden Croatian Gem
Split, Dubrovnik, Zadar. All of the above have become famous holiday destinations along the Croatian coast in recent years but those harbouring for days gone by, where the country wasn’t awash with visitors should head for the town of Sibenik.
Just like its more illustrious neighbours, the town was used for the award winning TV series Game of Thrones, but that’s not all that’s here.
The old town including the UNESCO world heritage St James Cathedral are must do in addition to climbing up the the medieval gardens where you can enjoy a fantastic view over the Adriatic whilst sipping on some delicious loxla wine #croatia #gameofthrones #voyagevibes

Dubrovnik - Medieval City south of Croatia 🇭🇷
Dubrovnik is in southern Dalmatia, near Croatia’s southern tip. The Adriatic offers swimming and water sports and gives this port city a maritime climate. Summers are warm and sunny, and winters are damp and fairly mild. It’s a compact place, with under 50,000 residents – making it significantly smaller than Split and Zadar further up the coast.
In July and August (the high season), the sea is warm, and there’s an average of 11 hours of sunshine each day. Temperatures frequently exceed 95°F (35°C) as a constant stream of festivals – which focus on classical music, theater, folk and opera – arrive in town. Croatia’s many dance music festivals are further up the coast near Zadar, but buses and ferries make getting around a breeze.

Zadar, well worth a side trip?
The Croatian coastline increasing popularity of the past decade has led to crowds descending on the famous resorts of Dubrovnik and Split, especially with their connection to Game of Thrones.
For this still longing for the Croatia of old, Zadar might be the answer. Located on the beautiful Adriatic coastline the city combines both a beautiful coastline with a stunning old city centre and harbour hosting a delightful range of cafes, shops, restaurants and bars.

Embracing Nature's Beauty at Plitvice Lakes National Park
#closetonature #100waysoftravel #naturebeauty #love_nature #waterfall #lake #croatia #plitvicelakes #plitvicelakesnationalpark
In late September, we visited the breathtaking Plitvice Lakes National Park, a true haven for nature lovers. The park is renowned for its cascading waterfalls and interconnected lakes, where the crystal-clear waters shimmer in shades of turquoise and emerald. As we wandered along the wooden boardwalks, we were surrounded by lush greenery and the soothing sound of rushing water. The park is vast, and we took a boat ride across one of the larger lakes, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty of this natural wonder. Later, we hiked to a higher vantage point, where we were rewarded with a stunning aerial view of the entire park, showcasing its intricate network of waterfalls and lakes. Being immersed in such pristine nature was a truly unforgettable experience, leaving us in awe of the world’s natural beauty.
Hvar: Sun-Kissed Luxury and Island Charm
Hvar is the perfect blend of Mediterranean beauty and vibrant island life. My stay at the stunning apartment was an absolute highlight, offering incredible views of the turquoise waters. The heart of the island, **Hvar Town**, buzzes with energy, from its historic **Fortica Fortress** to its lively marina. I recommend climbing to the fortress for panoramic views of the town and nearby islands—it's worth the trek! For a relaxing escape, head to **Pakleni Islands** for secluded beaches and crystal-clear coves. Hvar’s nightlife is also not to be missed, with chic bars along the waterfront. This island has it all—history, adventure, and luxury!
**#TravelTips:** Visit during the shoulder season to avoid crowds and enjoy the island’s natural beauty in peace. And don’t miss trying the local lavender products, a specialty of Hvar.

Our Spontaneous Island Hopping and Boat Adventure to the Pakleni Islands
#islandtour#100waysoftravel #croatia #islandhoping #Paklenisland #hvar
We took a ferry from Split to Hvar and, on a whim, decided to rent a boat from a local Croatian guy. None of us had any experience driving a boat, but the owner was super cool and laid-back. He gave us a quick demo on how to start the engine and navigate, then, with absolute confidence, rented the boat to us. His only advice was to avoid hitting the yachts, as they were expensive. Armed with a simple map, we set off toward Pakleni Islands, an archipelago known for its pristine beaches, secluded coves, and crystal-clear waters. It was an incredible feeling to be in control of the boat, exploring the hidden bays and small islets at our own pace. We anchored near Palmizana, where we swam in the turquoise water and relaxed on the beach, surrounded by the scent of pine trees and the sound of gentle waves. The freedom of the open sea, the beauty of Pakleni, and the thrill of driving the boat ourselves made for a truly unforgettable adventure.
Croatia
#100waysoftravel #croatia #europe
The present-day republic is composed of the historically Croatian regions of Croatia-Slavonia (located in the upper arm of the country), Istria (centred on the Istrian Peninsula on the northern Adriatic coast), and Dalmatia (corresponding to the coastal strip). Although these regions were ruled for centuries by various foreign powers, they remained firmly Western-oriented in culture, acquiring a legacy of Roman law, the Latin alphabet, and western European political and economic traditions and institutions. A part of Yugoslavia for much of the 20th century, Croatia suffered considerably from the disintegration of that federation in the early 1990s. The European trajectory of Croatia was finally realized in 2013 when it joined the European Union; in 2023 Croatia adopted the euro as its currency.
Diocletian's Palace: The Emperor's Retreat
Diocletian's Palace is a massive ancient Roman complex built between the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. Rather than being a palace for the retired Roman Emperor Diocletian, it is more like a fortified compound, with half serving as Diocletian's residence and temple, and the other half as a typical Roman military camp. Today, Diocletian's Palace occupies half of the old town of Split, Croatia's second-largest city. It is one of the best-preserved and largest Roman palaces still in existence, earning it a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Diocletian was born a commoner and later rose through the military ranks to become the Roman Emperor. When he took over the empire, the once-mighty Roman Empire was in decline, plagued by internal strife, power struggles, military factions, barbarian invasions, and famines. After eliminating all rivals and gaining complete control of the Roman Empire, Diocletian deified the emperor's status, moved the capital, and sidelined the Senate to implement autocratic rule. He also initiated extensive reforms in taxation, law, and politics to address the empire's decay. Externally, he waged wars to secure the empire's borders against Persia, Egypt, and Germanic tribes. Most notably, he established the Tetrarchy, a system of rule by four emperors, to manage the vast empire and succession issues. This system worked well during Diocletian's reign due to his prestige and leadership, but it collapsed after his retirement. Nonetheless, his other reforms laid a solid foundation for the later resurgence of the Roman Empire.
After reaching the pinnacle of power, Diocletian made the surprising decision to abdicate, becoming one of the few Roman emperors to voluntarily step down. He chose to retire to his hometown of Dalmatia, where he built Diocletian's Palace near his birthplace in Split. There, he lived a peaceful rural life, experiencing a transformation from soldier to emperor to farmer.
In Split, Diocletian's Palace is impossible to ignore. The city is essentially built upon the palace, with homes and businesses embedded within the ancient ruins. The centuries-old stones can be found in every corner, creating a unique blend of old and new that I personally find enchanting. It feels like stepping through a time warp back to ancient Rome.
📜 Interesting Story: After Diocletian's abdication, the Roman Empire quickly fell into chaos again. Interestingly, when the empire was in turmoil, someone came to Diocletian's Palace to ask him to return and restore order. However, the retired Diocletian, enjoying his tranquil rural life, famously replied, "If you could show the emperor the cabbages I have grown with my own hands, he would never dare suggest that I replace the peace and happiness I now enjoy with the insatiable greed of power."
📜 Ironic Fact: After Diocletian's death, he was buried in his palace. Ironically, he is infamous for the last and largest persecution of Christians in Roman history. In the 7th century, his mausoleum was converted into the Cathedral of St. Domnius, housing the relics of two martyrs who were persecuted under his rule.
🌟 Tips: You can buy tickets to enter the Cathedral of St. Domnius within Diocletian's Palace and climb the bell tower. I highly recommend climbing the bell tower, as it offers a panoramic view of Split and the beautiful Adriatic Sea.
🚗 Transportation: Diocletian's Palace is located in Split's old town, adjacent to the train and bus stations. When traveling in Croatia, it is recommended to take the bus, as it is more convenient and reaches more destinations.

A charming village trip
#myhiddengems
Samobor made for a nice day trip during my stay in Zagreb. Croatia is starting to become a staple of my European holidays. And I've come to realise that all these lovely day trips and small cities with an old town might have something to do with it.
Samobor deserves more credit than it is given. For a small place with cobblestone streets, lovely food and historic ruins. I shared a rented car with another friend of mine so it took us barely half an hour to get here from Zagreb. There are also buses to do so. Oh and no parking issues, something that always worries me about new places and renting a car.
Now about things we managed to do or places to see included Wande king tomislav square, the church of St. Anastasia, old wooden bridge, a hike to the sombor castle ruins and the sombor museum. This felt just about enough and suited our pace. Although there might be some more local attractions worth seeing. Lastly, the town's famous somobor cream cake is worth trying. Then again all cakes are worth trying!!#myhiddengems #summerdestinations #sombor #croatia #daytrips #100waysoftravel #cherryblossom2024 #somobor
The Italian Flavour
#myhiddengems
I flew into Pula, with plans of visiting Istria during that trip. Pula itself has Roman ruins for sightseeing. Perhaps then you could head to Istria. There is something about Istria that is so reminiscent of Italy. Some things make it very obvious though. Be it the vineyards, the olive groves, seaside villages painted the colors of Liguria or the hill towns that look straight out of Tuscany. And you’ll notice that places here have Italian names as well as Croatian names.
If you love the idea of small and charming towns, Istria is the place for you. Labin, is one of my personal favourites among small towns. Each town has its own character, and each town’s residents will claim it’s the best town in Istria.
Another famous thing about Istria is that it's known for truffles. One of my favorite Istria experiences is ordering traditional fuži pasta with truffles and a glass of white Malvasia wine at one of the restaurants on the edge of the hilltop of Motovun, overlooking the landscape. These truffles are shaved thin enough to be translucent but thick enough to make a satisfying chew. Elsewhere what would have cost you 40 dollars or more. Here i remember paying barely 10 for it. #myhiddengems #summerdestinations #europe #istria #cherryblossom2024 #croatia #singapore #solotrip
The gem on the Dalmatian Coast
#myhiddengems
Zadar is a quaint sea side city with a fascinating history that hints both Roman and medival remains. The place had amongst the most memorable sunsets for me. And its mix of cliffs, coves and ancient Roman streets are worlds apart from Split or Dubrovnik’s noise and crowd.
This is also where you will find not so crowded and peaceful adriatic beaches. The pine covered streets of ugljan and pristine lakes with crystal clear lagoons is what sets it apart from other places. Some of croatia's most impressive National parks are close to or easily accessible from Zadar. Making it a great base for holidays that involve National parks. The likes of plitvice lake National Park, paklencia National Park are world class and not to be missed. #myhiddengems #summer #europeantrip #familygetaway #nature #beachlife #croatia
Another Croatian Gem
#myhiddengems
While Sibenik is known to travellers that have visited Croatia and naturally come back cos it's so worth it. I feel that in case of croatia and new travellers or those intending to travel here with less number of days usual overlook it. More often they favour Dubrovnik or split.
While people have their reasons but in terms of an authentic croatian experience and seeking a hidden gem as a way of avoiding crowds in popular places. I think Sibenik is a strong contender. It is as authentic as it gets, offering a glimpse into the local life, rich history, and wine production. When you enter Sibenik, you get these contrasting first impressions all within the first ten minutes or so. The quaint fisherman's waterfront, the Cathedral and the grandeur of the Renaissance noble families' homes, the breathtaking view of the bay, and the winding alleys harboring cozy cafes, boutiques, and heritage hotels.
Now, old towns tend to be a common theme in croatain holidays and it's very well justified in places like Sibenik. You see, Sibenik was an important Renaissance hub in Croatia during the 15th and 16th centuries. Many buildings, including the imposing St.James Cathedral, were erected during this period. The triple-nave UNESCO-protected cathedral is particularly stunning as it was built from limestone and white marble originating from the island of Brac.
In terms of what else to see, the list goes on. Other attractions include the Duke's Palace, and the Loggia or Town Hall featuring grand pillars with arches, a balustrade terrace, and a full-window front facade. With two more walkable fortresses, St.John's and Barone, you can have a fulfilling day of soaking in history. A personal favourite activity of mine also tends to be local cuisines and Sibenik with its wines won't disappoint you. #myhiddengems #100waysoftravel #summergetaway #croatia #sibenik #cherryblossom2024 #solotrip #singapore
A pricey family getaway
#familytravel
I think Dubrovnik coupled with some more of Croatia can make for a very nice Family travel.
Between my last trip to Dubrovnik almost a decade ago and then a family trip earlier this year. A lot has happened. The prices have shot up unreasonably. So much for enjoying GOT. While it is not longer an affordable backpacker destination.
There are better options in Croatia for that. But for shorter holidays like the ones you go with family. It might still be doable. As you still get to enjoy all that Dubrovnik offers. Dubrovnik is one of the most popular walled cities in the world. Personally i rate it high on my list of mediaeval destinations.
I like that Dubrovnik seems spotlessly clean, not only in the old town. But also in the modern parts. I also like the fact the way the new houses integrate perfectly into the landscape - there are no horrible, concrete blocks and heavy architecture known in post-communist states.
The size of Dubrovnik also works to its advantage. It's just perfect, small enough if you want to see its beautiful old town in one day by just walking around. And big enough if you want more and like to be active. You can hike the Sdr hill - we took the cable car one way up and then walked down, this way we could admire the absolutely amazing, bird's eye view over the old town as well as many islands surrounded by the crystal clear, azure Adriatic sea.
The sun, the weather and the beaches! Dubrovnik has an amazing, Mediterranean climate which guarantees a lot of sunny days throughout the year. The crystal clear waters and the beaches are also beautiful - especially contrasting with the view of the spectacular walls of the old town.

Lovely little town
#100WaysOfTravel
Primosten was a great find. I went there for a weekend and ended up staying 4 nights. It's about an hour or slightly more from Split. It's a fantastic place to enjoy sunny weather, clear water and some great food. The beach was quite long. So even if i was there during peak season, one could always walk further and find a nice spot.
To think of it i could have visited other places that I eventually went to from here, while staying here. I mean Trogir was not too far, split too. And accommodation options were good here. While some people prefer places with a list of attractions. I am more for the small town feel.
Having said so, during my time here and besides the food and beach adventures. I also managed to walk around plenty and touch most things of tourist interest. Namely the old town gate, hilltop cemetery, that statue of a fisherman with a cat, st. Rocco church and some similar stops. A personal favourite was Bucavac Vineyards. They, as in primosten seems to have very good red wine!#100waysoftravel #croatia #sunnydays #clearwater
More Authentic
#100waysoftravel
While both Dubrovnik and Split are victims of overpricing. There is still some hope in the case of Split. As it is less crowded compared to Dubrovnik and offers a scope for a more authentic croatian experience. Split can also score more points on the affordability scale (only when compared to Dubrovnik). The rest of croatia continues to be decently priced.
As far as sightseeing goes. Just about everything you want to see in Split is within the walls of Roman emperor Diocletian's Palace, completed in 305 AD. It's a compact area and you'll easily find your way around the narrow alleys. Make sure you visit St. Domnius Cathedral, it is well over 1,000 years old. You could climb to the top of the bell tower there for a view of the city.
But if you care, I did find a better spot.Walk exactly 10 minutes to the left of the palace and then up some stairs and paths in the neighborhood of Marjan. By the time you reach the tiny St. Nicholas Church (1219), you'll be rewarded with an even better view, most importantly without any tourists and it's free!

Beaches, Vineyards & Island vibes
#beachlife
Croatia is one of my favourite places in Europe. And I have been going there since before game of thrones happened and tourism boomed. Surely that has led to some cities becoming more expensive but hey I'm not a cheapster anymore (hehe).
Listen ya'll, let me tell you about Korcula. Until my most recent holidays it seemed to still enjoy less tourists and no rush. While offering all you need from a beach holiday and much more.
I mean there are forest, vineyards, beaches and fishing villages to explore. The old town is a net of narrow alleyways and hidden gems. Edifices framed by flowers and colourful pot plants paint the Medieval town with a quirky character.
And then just around the corner is the Town Museum that does a great job encapsulating Korcula’s rich background. Aside from the architecture and array of blissful beaches, winemaking is an intrinsic part of Korcula’s culture.
In terms of day trips and island hopping there are plenty of options. Namely the beaches of Vela Przina Beach, Bilin Zal Beach, Pupnatska Luka Beach and Vaja Beach make for a lovely day's work.#beachlife #culture #wine #croatia
Best weather in Europe
#hiddengems
While Croatia may not be part of everyone's European holiday. I sure was glad to have made it a part of mine. The weather in known to be brilliant with Croatia receiving lots of sunshine. Back when I visited it was starting to get popular with backpackers and getting featured in a popular television show.
Anyone considering it must ensure a minimum of two weeks. With picturesque seafront towns and quaint islands, there are many reasons to visit Croatia as it is truly a unique place to spend summer. Croatia might be a small country, but there are so many places to visit along the Croatian coastline from Pula in the north, Zadar in the center, and Dubrovnik in the south.
Places like Dubrovnik or Split get quite crowded in the summer, but you can still find hidden gems like Šibenik, Trogir, or the Istrian peninsula. While you could pick one destination to visit, I would even recommend going on a road trip along the Croatian coastline and visiting several towns.#hiddengems #beachlife #offbeat #croatia
The magical national park of CROATIA 🇭🇷
Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia is a natural wonder that captivates visitors with its breathtaking beauty and pristine landscapes. As Croatia’s oldest and largest national park, Plitvice is renowned for its cascading waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and lush greenery. The park consists of 16 interconnected lakes that flow into one another, creating a series of stunning waterfalls that range from gentle trickles to powerful torrents.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Plitvice is its vibrant turquoise waters, which are rich in minerals and teeming with aquatic life. Walking along the well-maintained wooden pathways and bridges allows visitors to immerse themselves in the park’s serene environment. The sound of water flowing and birds singing adds to the tranquility, making it a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Around 2 hours away from Zagreb or 3 hours from Split, the Plitvice Lakes National Park can only be reached by private transport or day tour with a Croatia travel agency. I will recommend to go with a day tour as they will be able to guide you the nature trails around the Lower Lakes as well as the Upper Lakes. The guide will bring you around the park to admire and enjoy the spectacular scenery of the UNESCO World Heritage site - the 16 terraced lakes, breathtaking canyons, and more than 90 waterfalls. You can also admire the highest waterfall, Veliki Slap in Croatia at Plitvice Lakes.

Slow Step in Marija Bistrica@Zagorje, Croatia
Marija Bistrica is a village and municipality located in Zagorje County central of Croatia. Taking small slow steps strolling around the area in the morning was indeed very peaceful with fresh air and green grasses everywhere also, very less of city’s noise pollution. One of the reasons is that this urban village is situated on the slopes of Medvednica mountain in the north of Capital Zagreb. Can be considered a good place for retirement plan in future😄.
