The top of the mountain is at an elevation of 519 meters and resembles legendary dragon horn, hence the name – Jiaoshan, a horn-like mountain. Jiaoshan is also hailed as "the first mountain of the Great Wall". In early November, I visited Shanhaiguan Pass, known as 'The First Pass Under Heaven' (山海关 - 天下第一关), which was constructed during the Ming Dynasty from 1368 to 1644. It's a 1 hour and 30 minute train ride from Tianjin or a 2 hour and 30 minute ride from Beijing. Brought my mother to Beijing for her 60th bday because that was her bday wish and gubei water town DID not disappoint. 2 hours ride from main city (I came from Chongwenmen) and there’s an entry fee for both the town + Great Wall + cable car, about SGD40 per pax. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience one of the new seven workers of the world. I recommend you to go there early in the morning to avoid crowds. We went there around 8 am and it wasn’t busy at all. However, on our way out around 12 am there was a long queue with many people waiting. Mutianyu offers a very peaceful and pleasant experience. After 3 years of living in China, I finally made it to the Great Walk of China! 🇨🇳 🎫 I booked a tour which provided the ticket and transport from Beijing, about a 2 hour bus ride. 📅 I visited in March, the weather was not too hot or cold and the crowds were low. 🚠 I chose to take the cable car up to tower 14. You can also hike up or even choose to slide back down the hill! ⛰️ The highest point you can walk to on the Mutianyu Great Wall is tower 23. It takes about 1.5 hours to walk there from tower 14. 📸 For the best photos, I definitely recommend hiking up to tower 23. It gets quite steep towards the end, but it worth it for the beautiful view! 🥢 At the entrance, you can find many souvenir shops and restaurants. 🌟 Overall, I had an amazing time here. 🚌 I visited the Great Wall at Mutianyu. I went with a company called Mubus. They were amazing! For 150rmb, they provided a bus to and from the Great Wall, as well as covered ticket prices for entry. For additional costs, you can choose to toboggan down the wall! 🎋 I went in early March, which I highly recommend. It was quiet and still, allowing for perfect pictures and a much more laid back experience. While you may not have the lush greenery that surrounds the Great Wall during the summer months, there were many upsides to going off season. In addition to it being less crowded, it was also much cooler than it would be in the summer. ✨ The Great Wall really is so special and I am so happy I got to see it and hike it. #familytrips2024 I have been to Mutianyu Great Wall before, and this year I am fortunate enough to have a chance to visit another part of this gorgeous construction with my family. We got invited to joined a group tour to the Lakeside Great Wall. The journey was about 2 hours drive from China World Trade Center Beijing. We arrived Huanghuacheng Lakeside Great Wall around 9.30am. The view when we get nearer was breathtaking, with colourful flowers blooming everywhere. Once arrived, we were ushered to a tunnel and walk to the jetty for a short 5mins boat ride. The beauty of the lake and surrounding mountains and floral make the whole ride feel so graceful and magical. We crossed wooden bridges, hilly path, rainbow stride walkway, botanical gardens, witnessing a 800 year old ancient tree, what else can we ask for for such enjoyment. We also come across a hanging glass bridge before hiking up the Great Wall. The hike on this path is not too challenging but you still need some stamina and physical strength. The beautiful view and cool air helps to distract you from the exhaustion. It could be a bit tiring for those who don't exercise regularly but the experience along the way is definitely worth it. I had only seen the Great Wall in books or on videos, and when I was finally there, it felt surreal (I was super happy and had butterflies in my stomach 😅😁). I took a lot of photos there, of course😎. Getting There - The Great Wall is very far from the city center and it’s best to book a guided tour to the Great Wall. It’s going to be hassle free and most tours include a free lunch of traditional Chinese dishes. Food & Restaurants - There are a few restaurants near the entrance, but only a few stalls as you enter. This is Shanhaiguan (山海关), one of the major passes in the Great Wall of China, being the easternmost stronghold along the Ming Great Wall. For us we planned for a Great Wall [two parts, one in mountains which is called the nine gates of Great Wall on water (水上长城九门口) & the Dragon’s head (长城之首老龙头)] and First pass under heaven (天下第一关) and drop at railway station at the end including waiting at these three places total- 80yuans/head 2. Ticket price at nine gates of Great Wall on water (水上长城九门口) - 40yuans/head and extra 10yuans for a ride to go near the wall 3. Hushan Great Wall is just a 30-40-minute ride (using DiDi) from the Yalu Broken Bridge. I went to Hushan Great Wall during summer, so I highly recommend wearing white and bring at least two bottles of water. There is a vendo machine few steps after you reach the top. There is a comfort room before reaching the top. I bought two tickets, 60rmb for the entrance and 10rmb for the battery car. I also recommend riding a battery car for the back-and-forth ride going to the foot of the Great Wall and back to the entrance. During the hike, remember to take photo of the map, enjoy beauty for every tower you've reached. North Korea is visible especially upon reaching the peak of the Great Wall. Once you've reach the end of the hike, do not forget to go to the China-DPRK Border. We eagerly boarded a cable chair, we hopped on a cable chair that whisked us up the majestic mountains, revealing a breathtaking panorama. The view from the walls was nothing short of extraordinary, with the beautiful mountains stretching as far as the eye could see. The intricate architecture of the wall fascinated us, a testament to the ancient craftsmanship. To descend the mountain, we embarked on an exhilarating toboggan ride, gliding down on a chair slide that felt like a thrilling rollercoaster adventure. Details were clear as to which Train Station and exit to meet up with the guide whom very swiftly helped us with the tickets and recommendation as to whether to tour the Watertown or Trek the Greatwall depending on your personal tempo! We chose to do a quick walk around the refurbished Watertown to catch a glimpse of its beauty in day light , and took the cable car to the mid point of Simatai Great Wall . This shorten our trek, yet allowed us to enjoy most parts in day light , and we didn’t need to rush to trek the Great Wall. The scenery was crazy! though the height do pose some adrenaline drive to some but it is all worth it! As the sun starts going down, we made our way down back to the Watertown. The Watertown we saw in daylight is now transformed ! with the lights all up it’s almost like it’s another city! We decided to take our daughter on a hike. The weather was great. The sky was clear, so rain couldn’t deter us from a hike. Didn’t expect the hike to be part of the Great Wall of China. I had no knowledge of there being different entrance points to the wall until I researched how to get to the wall. once arriving it was fairly easy to get to the entrance from the shuttle. There were rows of shops leading up to the entryway of the wall. once we entered the wall and started climbing things got interesting. There were many steps, slopes, and breaks. This part of The Great Wall is called Laolongtou or “Dragon’s Head”. It is located in Shanhaiguan District of Qinhuangdao and is the part of the wall that extends about 20 meters into the Bohai sea. It is definitely worth a visit. Once called the beginning of the Great Wall, the dragon’s head makes for some cool photographs. Easily accessed by fast train from most major cities. The beach is not great but you can get your feet wet and enjoy a cold drink or meal by the sea. The town is not very foreigner-friendly so be sure to call ahead to see if your chosen hotel will accept you. We were collected from Sanlitun by car and drove for just over an hour to get to the Barracks where we would be sleeping. After some drinks, nibbles and chat we settled down to a phenomenal dinner and then to bed for an early night. At 3:30am we were awoken with a gentle knock on the door and after a quick croissant and smoking cup of coffee we were off with William’s sons, Jimmy and Tommy. The hikes offered were nothing short of amazing and the views were the best we had ever seen from the Wall. In total there were 3 hikes. The accommodation at the Barracks was simple but perfectly fitting our environment. The real gem was the conversations had during the hikes and during our off time where you can talk with William Lindsay and his family; a family of historians and fountains of knowledge about the wall. Fresh, excellent, homemade food provided as part of the package cooked on site and served piping hot. The breakfasts were amazing and the coffee strong and full-bodied. Tiger Mountain (Hushan) Great Wall is a restored section of the eastern end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, well known for the breathtaking views of the surrounding forestry and landscape. This particular section is located in a small village named Hushan in Kuandian County, Liaoning Province. It was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and overlooks the Yalu River which served as an important natural land barrier. Main purpose then was to protect against invasion by Mongol forces and Jurchen tribes to the north, Japanese from the northeast as well Korean attacks from the south. Highlights of the visit : - Breathtaking scenery and panoramic views of North Korea across the Yalu River. - Explore 12 gate towers, and see some Ming-style buildings. - The highest peak of Hushan Great Wall is a beacon / observaton tower. From there, you can overlook North Korea. - The Great Wall History Museum onsite is worth a visit if you wish to find out more about the Hushan section and the rest of the Great Wall. As this Is a much less crowded section of the Great Wall compared to other locations, you can have more space to take awesome shots and uninterrupted selfies ! Note : Steps are steep and narrow so do wear proper attire and shoes. Take some rest and water break along the way.
