New Gigabyte gaming laptops: The Taiwanese firm has lifted the lid on its latest line of Aorus X5, X7 and X9 gaming notebooks. Here’s everything you need to know about them.
Aorus X5, X7 and X9 specs
The new laptops are the eighth generation of Gigabyte’s X-series Aorus line. The laptops are flagship devices that aim to offer cutting-edge performance over a small form factor such as the company’s Aero line.
Sadly, none of the models feature the bezel-less design of the Aero, which has been in vogue since Dell launched its InfinityEdge display-packing XPS Ultrabooks. At first glance, the devices don’t look terribly different to past Aorus laptops, featuring a similar, “hawk” inspired chassis.
However, under-the-hood they’re very different beasts, with completely reworked components, an updated cooling system, and wealth of new features that includes Dolby Atmos.

The laptops are the first in a wave to support Dolby Atmos virtual surround sound. Gigabyte has also loaded the tech into its flagship Aero 15.
The X9 is the most interesting of the three new models, thanks to its use of Intel’s new powerhouse Core i9 mobile CPU. Paired with an Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU and up to 64GB of DDR4 2666MHz RAM, the X9 should be capable of 4K gaming. Gigabyte reportedly had to completely redesign the laptop’s cooling system to accommodate the hardware, increasing the number of heat pipes from six to seven and adding new dual fans.
For competitive gamers, Gigabyte is also offering the X9 with a Brown switch keyboard option. Although we can’t see many gamers having an issue with its regular RGB backlit, NKRO (N-key roll-over) setup.
Despite the hardware, Gigabyte is only offering the laptop with a 17.3-inch FHD panel. Which means those who really want to get the most out of the hardware will have to connect the machine to an external, higher-resolution monitor.
Below the X9, the X7 is the more sensible option for most people. It features close to identical specs to the X9 outside of its use of a still respectable Intel Core i7-8850H CPU, which will be more than good enough for 1080p gaming for years to come.
The X5 is the most basic option, but still offers buyers some impressive hardware. It uses the same i7 CPU as the X7, but features a GTX 1070 GPU and smaller 15.6-inch, G-Sync display.

The company has also remained tight-lipped on pricing, although past X5s have retailed for roughly £2000 – don’t expect them to be cheap.
