Nvidia RTX 4000 Series: Release date, price and specs

The Nvidia RTX 4000 Series has finally ben announced, with both the Nvidia RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 graphics cards officially confirmed.

The new Nvidia cards will be built upon the new Lovelace architecture, featuring TSMC’s 4nm process node to upgrade the performance. The architecture will also debut the 3rd Generation RT Cores and 4th Generation Tensor Cores to allow for improved ray tracing as well as compatibility with DLSS 3.0.

The flagship card, the RTX 4090, will apparently be 4x more powerful than its predecessor, making it the most powerful consumer graphics card.

Keep reading on for everything you need to know about the new Nvidia RTX 4000 Series graphics cards.

Release date

Nvidia has confirmed the RTX 4090 will be the very first graphics card in the range, and will available to buy from 12 October 2022.

The company also unveiled the RTX 4080, which will launch in November. There’s no exact release date just yet, but we’ll update this article as soon as we hear more.

Price

The new Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card has a $1599/£1679 starting price. This makes it $100 more expensive than the RTX 3090 at launch.

The Nvidia RTX 4080 16GB and 12GB have starting prices of $1199/£1269 and $899/£949, respectively. That’s a huge price increase on their predecessors, with the 12GB and 10GB models costing $699 and $649 respectively at launch.

Specs

The Nvidia RTX 4000 Series is built upon the new Lovelace architecture, which uses a custom TSMC 4nm process node. This packs a whopping 76 billion transistors, which is a huge upgrade on the 28 billion transistors found on the preceding Ampere architecture.

A higher number of transistors generally results in a faster performance, so it’s clear to see that the RTX 4000 Series will provide a significant performance boost.

The Lovelace architecture will also feature 3rd Gen RT Cores to boost rat tracing performance, and 4th Gen Tensor Cores that enables the Lovelace GPUs to use the new DLSS 3.0 software.

Nvidia claims the RTX 4090 is between 2x and 4x faster than RTX 3090 Ti, depending on the game. The company also claims the RTX 4080 is between 2x and 4x faster than the RTX 3080 Ti.

The Nvidia RTX 4090 will feature 24GB GDDR6X memory, while the RTX 4080 will be available in two different flavours: 16GB GDDR6X and 12GB GDDR6X.

Nvidia has increased the number of CUDA Cores for each card, while also raising the boosted clock speed. The Nvidia RTX 4090 unfortunately has a greater power consumption than its predecessor at a whopping 450W, and so may require a more powerful PSU. But Nvidia has actually managed to reduce the power consumption for the RTX 4080 compared to previous models, which is a great achievement.
