WAVERLY, Iowa — Funeral services are being held today in Waverly for an Iowa Army National Guard soldier who died in a roadside bombing in Afghanistan.
Twenty-one-year-old Spc. Donald Nichols, of Shell Rock, was killed on April 13 when his vehicle was hit by a bomb. Another Iowa soldier was wounded in the attack.
Nichols is one of two Iowa National Guard soldiers killed in Afghanistan earlier this month. Thirty-one-year-old Sgt. Brent Maher, of Honey Creek, died in a roadside bombing on April 11. His funeral was held in Council Bluffs on Friday.
