WOODBURY (6-2) at ROBBINSDALE ARMSTRONG (6-2)
The skinny: Woodbury is the only Class 6A team with a winning record that opens the postseason with a road game, and the Royals are tasked with taking down a strong Armstrong team whose only losses were to Class 5A powers Robbinsdale Cooper and Spring Lake Park. Still, Armstrong likely hasn’t seen a passing game as good as the one quarterback Brady Mundahl, receiver Jeremiah Coddon and the Royals sport this season.
Our pick: Woodbury 31, Armstrong 20
CHAMPLIN PARK (4-4) at STILLWATER (5-3)
The skinny: Four games through the season, Stillwater was 1-3 and the thought of a home playoff game for the Ponies was laughable — but here we are. The Ponies have won four straight, including victories over Woodbury and Mounds View. Senior running back Stephen Wagner has been a workhorse for Stillwater, rushing for 1,010 yards and 12 scores.
Our pick: Stillwater 27, Champlin Park 14
MOUNDS VIEW (4-4) at EDINA (3-5)
The skinny: The Mustangs are viewing the postseason as a new campaign after closing out the regular season with three straight losses. Mounds View is likely the best No. 6 seed in the 32-team field, with all four of its losses coming by 10 points or fewer to teams that finished with winning records. Meanwhile, Edina is the only Round 1 host with a losing record, though the Hornets did give 6-2 Wayzata a run for its money a couple of weeks ago.
Our pick: Mounds View 28, Edina 21
EAGAN (3-5) at CENTENNIAL (4-4)
The skinny: The curious case of Centennial involves a season in which the Cougars lost their first three games before going on to win four of their last five — highlighted by wins over Totino-Grace and Osseo, a couple of No. 2 seeds in the Class 6A tournament. No one may be hotter than Centennial right now, which could spell trouble for Eagan. One thing going for the Wildcats is their defense, which has held opponent to 20 points or fewer in five games.
Our pick: Centennial 21, Eagan 13
LAKEVILLE SOUTH (4-4) at BLAINE (4-4)
The skinny: Lakeville South found the solution for what ailed it during the first month of the season. The Cougars scored just 26 points over their first four games (1-3) before flipping the switch. They scored 140 points over their final four games of the regular season (3-1). Blaine’s defense has surrendered 146 points over the same four-game stretch (1-3).
Our pick: Lakeville South 41, Blaine 29
