After a year hiatus, American Burger Bar in downtown St. Paul has reopened, unveiling a new look and updated menu.
The burger spot on Wabasha Street opened to the public Monday after a fire in October 2014 closed the doors temporarily. During the closing, a major remodel took place.
“We tried to take the design of the space and make it more of an urban feel and something that fit more with the American Burger Bar concept,” said Todd Geller, owner of the Victory Ramp building where American Burger Bar is housed. “Before it was more of a steakhouse feel.”
Look for a more casual vibe with an open-floor concept. A light color palette and plenty of natural light from windows facing Wabasha Street have replaced dark mahogany walls and dim fixtures. The former bar has been relocated and replaced with an extensive wrap-around bar. Updated booths, tables and the addition of casual high-tops are also now part of the decor. An added entrance from the Victory Ramp now gives customers access to the restaurant through the skyway.
As far as the menu, the tap beer selection has more than doubled from 10 to 24. Slight tweaks have also been made to the menu, but you can still build your own burger.
American Burger Bar in downtown St. Paul first opened in March 2009. Previously the space housed Matty B’s, and before that, the long-running Gallivan’s.
Geller says the fire most likely started in the chimney space above the gas fireplace.
“We think it got so hot it ignited the wood framing in some way. And ultimately while the fire didn’t do an enormous amount of fire damage. The smoke damage was pretty darn significant and so was some of the water damage,” Geller said. “The only thing to do was to take it apart and start over. That’s why it took longer to reopen than expected.”
