MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — The aviation program at Minnesota State University, Mankato, has grown about 60 percent in the last four years as demand for new pilots grows nationwide.
The program offers the state’s only bachelor’s degree in aviation. It was recently accredited by Aviation Accreditation Board International and 176 students are enrolled.
The approaching wave of baby boomer retirements is expected to hit the aviation industry hard, with pilots forced by rule to leave the cockpit at age 65. The Air Lines Pilots Association says 21,000 pilots are expected to retire from large U.S. airlines in the next decade.
The aviation program has been at the Mankato school since the mid-1970s, but coordinator Tom Peterson said it was at risk of shutting down amid a state budget shortfall in 2010.
“We were on the chopping block to begin with,” Peterson said. “Then we had some grassroots and community support that sent a message … that we’re serious about keeping our program, we’re serious about keeping our airport at the standard it is.”
St. Cloud State University decided to get rid of its aviation degree program in 2010, making Mankato the only one in Minnesota.
The university contracts with a local flight school, North Star Aviation, to provide training, Minnesota Public Radio News (http://bit.ly/1icFx7Q ) reports. Many students work as North Star flight instructors for about a year after graduation to accumulate the additional flight hours necessary to work for an airline.
The four-year cost of getting the degree is about $146,000, which includes aviation fees of roughly $81,000.
Rob McGregor, North Star’s flight school manager, said airlines are recruiting students months in advance, before they’ve flown enough hours to be hired.
“These students that are here now can pretty much pick the airline they want to go to,” McGregor said. “Two years ago, they may have instructed here two, three years, just trying to find a spot to go.”
