GRAND FORKS, N.D. — University of North Dakota officials say next week’s runoff vote on a new nickname might not determine the winner after all.

Voters will be deciding among three nickname options that were the most popular choices in the first round of voting. While next week’s vote was expected to be the final election, officials said Wednesday that another runoff will be held if the winning choice does not achieve a majority.

The three finalists are Fighting Hawks, Roughriders and Nodaks. Fighting Hawks was the top choice in the first vote, but did not receive 50 percent of the vote.

Those eligible to vote include UND students, faculty and staff; school alumni and retirees; donors; and athletic event season ticket holders.

UND’s controversial Fighting Sioux moniker was retired three years ago.
