From the bottom of her broken heart. Britney Spears admitted in a new interview that she is still “a hopeless romantic” even though she’s been through the wringer in her search for Mr. Right.
While chatting with Australia’s Rove & Sam radio show on Sunday, July 31, the “Make Me” singer, 34, spoke about her optimistic outlook on love despite her string of failed romances. Hear what she said in the video above!
“Unfortunately, I am [a hopeless romantic]. I’ve been through horrible relationships, but unfortunately I still believe in love,” Spears explained. “And you know, I think you should protect your heart and stuff like that. But yeah, I’m a hopeless romantic and I believe in love.”
As fans are well aware, the mom of Sean Preston, 10, and Jayden James, 9 — whom she shares with ex-husband Kevin Federline — hasn’t had the best luck in the dating department.
In 1999, a year after Spears shot to superstardom with the release of her iconic first single “… Baby One More Time,” she secretly began seeing fellow teen idol Justin Timberlake. However, they called it quits in 2002 amid reports that the pop princess cheated on JT, now 35, with choreographer Wade Robson.
After brief flings with celebs such as Fred Durst and Colin Farrell — and a 55-hour marriage to childhood pal Jason Alexander — in the early aughts, Spears fell for former backup dancer Federline, now 38, in 2004 after meeting him at a Hollywood nightclub. The pair married in September 2004 but divorced two years later shortly after Spears gave birth to their second son.
In the 2008 MTV documentary Britney: For the Record, the chart-topper revealed that she wed Federline for the wrong reasons: “Instead of following my heart and doing something that made me really happy, I just did it for the idea of everything.”
In 2009, Spears mixed business with pleasure when she began courting her agent Jason Trawick. She accepted his proposal two years later, in December 2011. They split amicably in January 2013.
The music magnate went on to date David Lucado, who she once described as “a simple man.” However, Spears pulled the plug on their nearly yearlong relationship in August 2014. During a September 2014 Piece of Me Las Vegas residency show, the entertainer put Lucado on blast for cheating on her. “Well, by now everyone knows my boyfriend cheated on me,” she bluntly told concertgoers during her set.
After that, she struck up a romance Charlie Ebersol — the son of Saturday Night Live cocreator Dick Ebersol and actress Susan Saint James — in October 2014, but they went their separate ways less than a year later in June 2015.
Regardless of her rocky relationships, Spears has been able to lean on her mom, Lynne, and her girlfriends for support.
“At the end of the day, I mean, I love my father, but I was always a mama’s girl growing up. I’m from the South, so there’s always something about me when I’m just with my girls or even my mother,” she said on Sunday. “There’s just a strong connection there. No offense, men!”
