All grown up! After establishing their careers as kids, child stars including Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and Shia LaBeouf have continued to find a place for themselves in the entertainment industry.
The Full House stars, who switched off playing Michelle Tanner, appeared in Passport to Paris, Our Lips Are Sealed, Winning London and Holiday in the Sun after their time on the sitcom. The siblings later chose to step away from acting to pursue fashion design.
In 2007, Mary-Kate and Ashley formed The Row and retired from the spotlight altogether when they became a big name in the fashion industry.
“We like working together and we like having that dialogue. I think it helps harden your ideas to be able to hear them out loud, to speak something through,” Ashley shared in a rare June 2021 interview with iD magazine. “You know, we definitely go by intuition and instinct and it can either confirm that feeling, or if we’re both not feeling right about something, for some reason, we just don’t do it. Our instincts are kind of the same. But I think what’s great is that we have each other to lean on.”
Mary-Kate, for her part, also offered a glimpse at their professional dynamic. “I think we’re very much perfectionists. We’re hard workers and we’ve always been hard workers,” she explained. “I think the reason we do fashion is to constantly try to fix our imperfections. And you have next season to do that. But it’s also our job to find every imperfection in there to make sure that we’re constantly pushing ourselves and training our eyes and making sure everyone is served. Just evolving and learning.”
At the time, Ashley noted that the duo have no current plans to step back in front of the camera. “We didn’t want to be in front of it, we didn’t necessarily even want to let people know it was us,” she continued. “It was really about the product, to the point where we were like: Who could we get to front this so that we don’t have to?”
LaBeouf, however, found an interest in expanding his presence on-and-off screen when he explored his passion for directing. While reflecting on his time as a young performer, the actor revealed he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder as a result.
“I was trying to earn my father. I was trying to shake off Disney. I was trying to shake off blockbusters,” the Even Stevens alum detailed during an October 2019 appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s “Awards Chatter” podcast. “And I was trying to work with people who f—ked with me.”
After being involved in various legal issues over the years, the California native reflected on his declining mental health. “It was the first time I’d been told I had PTSD,” he added on the podcast, referring to his court-ordered rehab for a 2017 arrest. “I just thought I was an alcoholic, like, a true-blue drunk and I needed to deal with that. I knew it was an issue but didn’t know there was this extra whole other thing that was hindering my ability to have any peace in my life and my ability to deal with people.”
Since then, LaBeouf has welcomed his first child with wife Mia Goth. In August 2022, the Disney Channel alum confirmed that the Pearl star gave birth to their daughter, Isabel, earlier that year.
