'Private Practice' Cast: Where Are They Now?

Saving lives! Kate Walsh, Audra McDonald and more expanded the Grey’s Anatomy universe with the spinoff Private Practice. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the series premiered on ABC in 2007 and continued for six seasons. Walsh portrayed Dr. Addison Montgomery, who left Seattle Grace Hospital to join a private medical practice in Los Angeles. Before the show’s debut, Walsh opened up about how different it felt to be front and center after her time on Grey’s Anatomy. “I was shocked and excited and mostly just totally blown away,” she told TV Guide at the time of being given the starring role. “Then I was nervous, like, ‘Wait, really? Why me?’ But mostly I was just thrilled because it totally felt like the right thing. I was so flattered and honored that they would think of my character to take off for greener pastures.” [sendtonews type="float" key="S7lY0Ouvqg-2834536-14453"] The Emily in Paris actress said it was “the right time” to move on from Grey’s, adding, “It felt like leaving home for college. ​​I miss [the cast], for sure, because you spend so much time working with everyone every day. It’s like they’re your family, you know?” Walsh’s new ensemble included Tim Daly, Taye Diggs, Amy Brenneman and Caterina Scorsone, with a handful of crossovers throughout the series as it aired in tandem with Grey’s. Following its final episode, the cast spoke about the Private Practice team’s future. “It was hugely emotional, and there were a lot of tears. It felt very dreamy and symbolic: Addison is being sent off into this new life, and all the characters are being sent into their world to do what’s next,” the Girls Trip star gushed to The Hollywood Reporter in 2013, pitching a follow-up after wrapping the series. “It would revolve around Charlotte [KaDee Strickland] and Cooper [Paul Adelstein], and they start their own thing. Or I’d love to follow Violet [Brenneman] wherever she is going to go.” McDonald, for her part, was ready to pass the baton to the next generation. “I’d want it to be the children of Private Practice: Charlotte and Cooper’s kids, me and Sam’s kids, Henry and Lucas,” she told the outlet. “That would be a fun thing to see the children of Private Practice and what happens to them — we see them 10-15 years from now, and are they all drug addicts or are they rich little brats. Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery)

After Private Practice ended in 2013, Walsh briefly returned to the Grey’s universe during season 19 of the original series. Other notable TV credits include Bad Judge, The Umbrella Academy, 13 Reasons Why and Emily in Paris. On the big screen, she’s appeared in Kicking & Screaming, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Legion. The Under the Tuscan Sun star was diagnosed with benign meningioma, a slow-growing tumor, in 2015 and later underwent surgery to have it removed. She has been linked to Andrew Nixon since 2020 following her divorce from 20th Century Fox exec Alex Young. In October 2022, Walsh accidentally announced her engagement to Nixon during an Instagram Live with Brenneman for the 15th anniversary of Private Practice's premiere.

Tim Daly (Pete Wilder)

Daly was nominated for an Emmy in 2007 for his performance as J.T. Dolan on The Sopranos before joining the medical drama. He has since appeared on The Mindy Project, Hot in Cleveland and Madam Secretary. In 2021, he began starring on The CW’s The Game alongside Tia Mowry and Brandy. The After Darkness actor married Amy Van Nostrand in 1982, and the pair welcomed two children before splitting in 2010. Daly moved on with Madam Secretary’s Téa Leoni in 2014.

Audra McDonald (Naomi Bennett)

The Juilliard alum is a six-time Tony winner, earning the accolades for her roles in Carousel, Ragtime and A Raisin in the Sun, among other Broadway shows. In 2017, she was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame. Outside of the Great White Way, McDonald has appeared on Grey’s Anatomy, The Good Wife and The Good Fight. She went on to join Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski in the 2022 HBO Max series The Gilded Age. The Grammy winner married Peter Donovan in 2000 before welcoming daughter Zoe the following year. McDonald split from the musician in 2009 and wed Will Swenson, with whom she welcomed daughter Sally in 2016.

Paul Adelstein (Cooper Freedman)

Along with Private Practice, the Chicago native has starred on Scandal, I Feel Bad and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. He cocreated Bravo’s Imposters, which aired for two seasons from 2017 to 2018. The Scrubs alum was married to Liza Weil from 2006 to 2016, when the Gilmore Girls alum filed for divorce. She requested to share custody of the duo’s daughter, Adelstein, born in 2010.

KaDee Strickland (Charlotte King)

Dubbed as a Hollywood “scream queen,” the Georgia native is known for her work in The Sixth Sense, The Grudge, Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid and The Flock. She went on to have roles in Something’s Gotta Give and Fever Pitch before returning to TV in 2016 for Hulu’s Shut Eye. Strickland sparked a romance with Jason Behr while filming The Grudge, and she married the Dawson's Creek alum in 2006. They share son Atticus, born in 2013.

Chris Lowell (William 'Dell' Parker)

Apart from his work on TV, the Veronica Mars alum has also appeared in Up in the Air, The Help and Promising Young Woman, all of which were nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards after their release. He made his directorial debut with 2013’s Beside Still Waters before starring on Hulu’s How I Met Your Father nearly a decade later. In July 2021, Lowell announced that he quietly welcomed a baby girl with longtime girlfriend Kerry Bishé.

Taye Diggs (Sam Bennett)

A star of stage and screen, Diggs is known for his work in Broadway’s Rent and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His movie credits include films How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Brown Sugar, The Best Man, Set It Up and Rent, in which he reprised the role of Benny the landlord. Along with Grey’s and Private Practice, the New Jersey native has appeared on Will & Grace, New Girl and All American. He had a brief cameo on Netflix’s Selling Sunset, reuniting with ex Amanza Smith. Diggs shares son Walker with ex-wife Idina Menzel.

Amy Brenneman (Violet Turner)

The Emmy nominee has starred in films including Heat, Daylight, Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her, Nine Lives and The Jane Austen Book Club. Following the end of Private Practice, she portrayed Laurie Garvey on HBO’s The Leftovers from 2014 to 2017. Brenneman was previously known for playing Detective Janice Licalsi on NYPD Blue and Judge Amy Gray on Judging Amy. She shares children Charlotte and Bodhi with husband Brad Silberling.

Brian Benben (Sheldon Wallace)

Before joining the ABC medical drama, the Virginia native played Martin Tupper on HBO’s Dream On. He met wife Madeleine Stowe while filming his first movie, 1981’s The Gangster Chronicles, and the pair welcomed daughter May in 1996. Benben briefly teamed up with Rhimes once more in 2014 with a guest role in Scandal before starring on Imposters in 2017.

Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepherd)

The Canadian star has been a mainstay in the Grey’s Anatomy universe since 2010, also appearing on Station 19. Scorsone married Rob Giles, a member of the rock band The Rescues, in 2009. The pair went on to welcome daughters Eliza, Paloma and Arwen in 2012, 2016 and 2019, respectively. Their middle child was born with Down syndrome, and Scorsone has since become a vocal advocate for those with cognitive disabilities. She and Giles separated in March 2020, filing for divorce two months later.

Benjamin Bratt (Jake Reilly)

On the big screen, Bratt has appeared in Miss Congeniality, Traffic, Piñero, Catwoman, Despicable Me 2 and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. His song “Remember Me” in the 2017 animated movie Coco won Best Original Song at the 2018 Academy Awards. The film also earned the trophy for Best Animated Feature. Bratt has also starred on Frasier, Modern Family and 24: Live Another Day. After splitting from Julia Roberts in the early 2000s, the actor moved on with wife Talisa Soto. They wed in 2002 and share two children: daughter Sophia and son Mateo.

Griffin Gluck (Mason Warner)

Along with Private Practice, the California native has starred in Hulu’s Big Time Adolescence and Netfilx’s American Vandal. He portrayed Jack Dunkleman in the Netflix original movie Tall Girl before joining the cast of Locke & Key, which was dropped by the streaming platform in April 2022.
