LA Times Book Club - The Many Worlds Of Octavia E. Butler with guest Lynell George

This fall the L.A. Times Book Club is exploring the legacy and prolific writing of Southern California science fiction author Octavia E. Butler.

On Nov. 18 the book club welcomes Lynell George, author of “A Handful of Earth, A Handful of Sky: The World of Octavia E. Butler,” in conversation with Times writer Julia Wick. George based her new book on research from her fellowship at the Octavia E. Butler archive at the Huntington Library.

Born in Pasadena, Butler lived from 1947 to 2006 and was the first science fiction writer to win a MacArthur genius grant. Grand Central Publishing began to reissue her books in 2019. In September, Butler’s “Parable of the Sower” made the New York Times bestseller List 27 years after publication.

Butler’s “Parable of the Talents” won the Nebula Award for the best science fiction novel in 1995. Her books also include “Wild Seed,” which Viola Davis and Julius Tennon are developing for an Amazon series.

This free virtual book club event starts at 7 p.m. PDT on Nov. 18. (Please check back for the Eventbrite link & information on joining the event.)

Bookplates signed by Lynell George are available with purchase, while supplies last.
