People who owned an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus at any point between Sep. 16, 2016, and Jan. 3, 2023, and experienced audio problems with their devices have 14 days to file and receive a piece of Apple’s $35 million settlement.

The settlement is restricted to United States residents who owned one of these models and either reported audio troubles or paid Apple for repairs. Those meeting the criteria can receive compensation ranging from $50 to $349 from the company.

The deadline to submit a claim is June 3, according to the settlement website.

By being a member of the “Settlement Class,” users are entitled to receive a payment called the “Class Payment.” Members who paid Apple for repairs or replacements can receive up to $349, and people who reported a problem but did not pay out of pocket can receive up to $125.

Joseph Casillas and De’Jhontai Banks filed the lawsuit in 2019. After each buying an iPhone 7 in 2017, they said they started experiencing problems within the following year.

“Plaintiff Casillas noticed that his phone’s sound was distorted with audible static while attempting to play a video on his phone,” the complaint reads. “Plaintiff Banks noticed that she was unable to hear callers unless she used her iPhone’s speaker function. These are common indications of the Audio IC Defect.”

According to the lawsuit, the audio chip problem stems from inadequate casing on the phones. It also alleges that Apple has been aware of this matter and consistently declined to provide free repairs for affected users.

In the settlement agreement, Apple denied that the devices had such problems and all allegations of wrongdoing.
