MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Detroit man was charged after officers found more than 80 grams of fentanyl while searching his vehicle in Morgantown.

On June 25, officers with the Morgantown Police Department saw “a suspect vehicle involved in a hit and run report” from the previous day in a parking space on High Street, according to a criminal complaint.

Deante Hurt

Deante Hurt, 27, of Detroit, Michigan, was “standing by the vehicle,” and “quickly got into the driver seat and drove forward,” which resulted in officers performing a traffic stop, officers said.

While Hurt was in the process of parking the vehicle, officers saw him “access the dash of the vehicle by removing the ventilation/dash controls,” and he “reached in many additional places in the car,” according to the complaint.

When officers made contact with Hurt, they “smelled the odor of marijuana” and “observed Hurt to have multiple plastic bags sticking out of his right shorts pocket,” so officers removed him from the vehicle, officers said.

After being read his Miranda statement, Hurt “admitted to possessing a marijuana blunt, which was impounded from his possession,” and a search of the vehicle was then performed, resulting in officers locating approximately 84.7 grams of a substance which field tested positive for fentanyl, according to the complaint.

Hurt has been charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. He is being held in North Central Regional Jail on $50,000 bond.
