CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — West Virginia native and NBA legend Jerry West has passed away.

The Associated Press reported that West died Wednesday morning, citing an announcement from the Los Angeles Clippers. He was 86 years old. The Clippers said that he passed away peacefully with his wife Karen by his side.

West is known for being one of the best players in West Virginia University history where he played from 1957 to 1960. After that, he was an NBA championship winner both as a player and executive as well as an Olympic gold medalist. He is also a three-time Basketball Hall of Famer—once as an NBA player, once as an Olympian, and he will be indicted a third time as an contributor later this year, according to the AP. He is also considered the basis for the NBA logo.

As a Mountaineer, West is considered “the most famous athlete to ever wear the Gold and Blue” and has 17 WVU records, according to WVU Sports.

He is originally from Chelyan, West Virginia in Kanawha County and went to East Bank High School.
