Forget what you thought you knew about period gear. Here are some options that go beyond the basics. First step, heard of washable pads? Some companies that make them say their products can back up tampons or replace panty liners or pads.
And in case you're wondering, yes, period panties are a thing, too. They're absorbent underwear that you toss in the washing machine. How long you can wear products like these will depend on how heavy your flow is.
Next, menstrual cups are a longer-lasting alternative to pads and tampons. They're flexible devices that you could insert for up to 12 hours. And they collect your flow instead of absorbing it.
Some are reusable. You just empty them and clean them thoroughly. Other cups are disposable. You only use them once. Certain disposable kinds have a unique perk, though. You can have sex while the cup is in. Check the instructions to be sure, though. And since the device won't prevent pregnancies or STDs, your partner will still need to wear a condom.
