Passengers move from road to speed rail The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) has transported over 1,000,000 passengers in just four months since launching electric train services between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma in June 2024. This is double the annual figure achieved by the old train system, marking a major milestone in Tanzania’s rail transportation history. https://lnkd.in/eWP2pGcP #TanzaniaRailways #railway #rail #transport #SGRTanzania #RailTransport #Infrastructure #Development #TanzaniaRail

12k Trains SA - Southern Africa’s railways are suddenly getting global attention and attracting #billions of dollars in #investment, with a race to secure copper supplies needed for the #energy transition at its center. From #Angola on the continent’s west coast to #Tanzanian on the east, governments and investors are readying to revive decades-old rail lines that have fallen into disrepair and build new ones. Much of the new demand for freight comes from the central African copperbelt that #Zambia and #Democratic Republic of Congo share.

12k Trains SA - notes the fastest and only electric train in #EastAfrica. The #Tanzania electric #SGR hits a speed of 160 Km/h compared to Kenya’s SGR which uses diesel and can move up to 120 Km/h. The journey time for 460 km distance from #DaresSalaam to #Dodoma was reduced from 8 hours by bus to around 3 h 30 min by train. The future is #ElectricTrains

Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana are considering a collaborative rail project designed to extend a railway line into central Botswana. This tripartite initiative also includes the construction of a new deepwater mineral port in southern Mozambique, with the primary goal of exploiting Botswana's significant coal reserves. The project features several key elements: Participants: The collaboration involves Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. Recent Developments: - In May, the three countries jointly refurbished a 10 km section of railway from Machipanda to Mutare. - In November, they commissioned the upgrade of the Beira-Machipanda railway line, a project costing US$200 million. Port Location: The new deepwater port is to be situated in Techobanine, southern Mozambique. Railway Link: A 1,700 km railway line will connect this port to Botswana, traversing through Zimbabwe. Expected Cargo: The primary cargo for this railway link will be coal from Botswana. Bilateral and Tripartite Meetings: - Recent meetings have taken place in Maputo, with further discussions scheduled. - A tripartite agreement is expected to be signed in Maputo on Friday. - A high-level meeting between Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi will take place to finalise the details. Additional Agreements: - The countries will sign memorandums of understanding in geology, mining, and metallurgy. - These discussions will conclude during President Masisi's visit to Mozambique from 10-12 July. Infrastructure Goals: - The railway line from Machipanda to Mutare is expected to be operational within three months. - Train services from Beira to Harare are slated to commence shortly thereafter.

12k Trains SA - recognizes the great influence of the #kingfisher bird on the #Japanese fast bullet trains. The designer of the train realized the reduced amount of drag when the kingfisher enters the water. So the engineer and his team imitated that beak and created a shape that, when fitted on the front of the engine, would part the air rather than compress it. This subtle change made the trains quieter, faster, and more #energyEfficient. Bio-mimicry in Action: Drawing parallels between the kingfisher's beak and the train's design, Dr. Nakatsu initiated simulation studies. The outcome was groundbreaking—a train with a beak-inspired design. This innovation not only reduced noise by 30% but also cut power consumption by 15% and increased speed by 10%. #KingfisherBird #Efficiency #SpeedTrains #BulletTrains #EnergyEfficient #Nature #Inspiration #Japan #Innovation
