An Aerospace Indaba was an initiative of the South African Airforce and in conjunction with South African Aerospace Maritime and Defence Industries (AMD), and events organiser Smoke-On-Go put together this event as one of the first such conferences held in a very long time, previously prior 2020 and since then the global pandemic upset most events and only now do we see a resurgence. Although this has come close on the heels of AAD, future planning would look at holding this event in every alternate year as well as combining it with an #Airshow.   Wonderboom as a venue is well suited as it is within the domain of the centre of SAAF activities within #Tshwane and the GA sector at the airport. Although initially a 2 day #conference with a defence theme on day 1 and a GA theme for day 2, it was decided to run the two themes concurrently on Thursday at two separate venues. The Industry turnout was unexpectedly low – probably due to the short time the event was advertised, but at least there was a strong presence from Safomar Aviation (Pty) Ltd, INCOMAR , Denel Dynamics, Starlite Aviation Group, HENSOLDT, TAU Aerospace and Advanced Technologies, Leonardo and Century Avionics as headline sponsors.   The opening address was delivered by Major General Elma de Villiers, Chief Director Air Policy and Plans (CDAPP) at the SAAF. de Villiers highlighted the SAAF vision to enable “effective air and space power, through innovation in the theatre of operations” – and given the current funding constraints invited the local industry to support the SAAF in localising their requirements in keeping their fleet airborne, although achieving some level of independence from international original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) would be difficult for the SAAF but local industry partnership mechanisms can minimise the maintenance burden. A GA panel including James Pitman (Sling Aircraft), Pierre vd Walt (Sport Plane Builders), and Francois Jordaan (Aerostruct) discussed South Africa's GA design and manufacturing sector. They concluded that with strong regulatory support, favorable economic conditions, and a well-developed knowledge and skills base, South Africa continues to produce and export world-class products successfully.   However, the Indaba highlighted a growing resource challenge, emphasizing the need to identify and train the next generation of talent. In an innovative move, the SAAF is exploring deploying its resources into industry and supporting cross-training initiatives, which could maintain skills and technical capabilities cost-effectively on a smaller base.   The first Aerospace Indaba concluded with a Wonderboom Airshow on Saturday, featuring a full day’s program that attracted nearly 10,000 spectators, largely drawn by the SAAF-provided #Gripen, a reliable show participant. #aerospaceindaba2024 #southafrica #manufacturingindustry #aviationindustry #Aerosud #advancedmanufacturing

𝑨𝒆𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒖𝒅’𝒔 𝑵𝑫𝑻 𝒄𝒂𝒑𝒂𝒃𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒇𝒖𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒊𝒏-𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆, 𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒆𝒏𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒅 𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒔𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒆𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒄𝒚… After renting facilities at the Centurion Aerospace Village (CAV) for 4 years, Aerosud Aviation had to make urgent plans to relocate its NDT capability, after the CAV became unavailable.  Aerosud launched an intensive and focussed program to refurbished an under-utilised area of the Main building, and the move was completed over a long weekend in August. This was followed by a Customer product audit and the facility has been running like clock works since mid-August – mainly supporting A320 and A350 products.  This facility is also benefitting from the capital equipment renewal and investment program that was launched to support A320 single-source production of track cans.       #Innovation #NDT #Aerospace #capabilities #nondestructivetesting #NDTtesting #ownfacility #Airbus #A320
