  • Africa Check hosted a second ideathon on information resilience in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Supported by Meta, the event brought together academics from Addis Ababa University, representatives from the US Embassy, and UNESCO, as well as media development and civil society organisations. Nine idea pitches were delivered, with the top three winning prizes for the innovative use of AI, audience-specific media literacy strategies, and gender-specific approaches to misinformation. A big congratulations to the prize winners and heartfelt thanks to our local partner, Inform Africa!

  • Africa Check hosted the inaugural ideathon on information resilience, integrity and digital hygiene in Nairobi, Kenya. The event, supported by Meta, brought thought leaders from the Kenyan government, tech, fact-checkers, researchers, civil society, academia, media development organisation, and human rights organisations, Unesco and UNDP. The ideathon got 10 powerful and innovative ideas to build information resilience, boost digital hygiene, and disrupt harmful disinformation. These ideas were pitched to a panel of judges and an expert audience. Top three ideas got token prizes. Here’s what’s coming: ✅ Media situation rooms in Accra and Tamale (4-11 December) to monitor, verify, and debunk harmful election-related narratives. ✅ Collaboration with ~50+ journalists and 100+ media outlets in ~45 Ghanaian languages to amplify credible information. ✅ Partnerships with Africa Check, CDD-Ghana, WANEP, and more.   • Africa Check’s head of education and training, Carina van Wyk, and outreach assistant, Bokamoso Matsawane, were in Cape Town recently to facilitate the last of 29 fact-checking and verification workshops as part of a four-year project supported by the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF). More than 700 students and journalists across South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya attended these workshops, where they were equipped with skills to verify the accuracy of information, find credible data, and establish the origin of images and videos shared online.

  • ❌ Tahirou Sarr, candidat aux législatives sénégalaises du 17 novembre 2024 a affirmé que les étrangers représentent près de la moitié de la population du Sénégal. Les données disponibles, obtenues auprès de de l’Agence nationale de la Statistique et de la Démographie (ANSD), font état de 207 791 étrangers, soit 1,1% de la population. Des experts interrogés sur le sujet reconnaissent certaines limites dans le recensement de l’ANSD concernant les étrangers, mais ils confirment que ces derniers ne représentent en aucun cas la moitié de la population sénégalaise.
