We see this all too often, and without exception customers blame the quality of the parts. In this case the impeller came from a well-respected OEM in the #slurrypump industry. Any high chrome impeller will fail from thermal shock if cold slurry or flush water is introduced after operating at low or zero flow for even just a couple of minutes - that 55kW motor becomes a 55kW kettle! In some cases it may cause steam to build and the pump to explode. This critical #safety message needs to be shared far and wide.
Customer: "Look at this impeller! It was installed less than 3 weeks ago." HART Slurry Pumps: "It's not ours, but the failure has nothing to with the quality of the parts, and everything to do with bad operating practices. If no-one got injured or killed, consider yourself lucky." Under certain operating conditions it is possible for the flow through the slurry pipeline to reduce to low or zero flowrates. Slurry particles will therefore settle out and in the worst case it is possible that they block the slurry pump intake and discharge branches. If the slurry pump continues to operate in this condition, the energy input to the water inside the pump causes the water to heat and generate steam. It was 9:55 this morning when the phone rang, only hours after loud cheers and fireworks welcomed the new year. The operator of a pilot plant where we supplied #HARTSlurryPumps through Iphampu Consulting CC mid-2024 had trouble getting their expeller-sealed pumps to seal effectively. Stefan Van Eeden called the Technical Manager on site, and minutes later he was on his way to the plant. As it turns out, the system head was much lower than Iphampu had been advised for their modelling, resulting in a weak seal. After a couple of adjustments the pumps sealed just fine. "Thank you for your dedication and service - any other supplier would have told us to go fly a kite", the CEO remarked when Stefan bumped into him.
