The GIANTS have returned! In a historic move for Babanango Game Reserve and wildlife conservationists in South Africa, 16 elephants have recently been introduced onto the reserve. This plays a significant part in the reserve’s ambitious and successful rewilding journey. The first elephants to arrive were a small breeding herd of seven brought in from Manyoni Private Game Reserve in Maputaland, with their genetic lineage coming from Kruger National Park. This was followed by two bulls from Tembe Elephant Park located in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The latest additions to the reserve were seven elephants from Addo Elephant National Park in the Eastern Cape. This occasion signals their triumphant return to an area of Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal where they have been absent for more than 150 years. The translocation of the elephants from three different reserves across South Africa was made possible through key partner collaborations with Chris Galliers, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife The Aspinall Foundation , Over And Above Africa DCM Surfaces South African National Parks (SANParks) and Conservation solution. Summer on Babanango Game Reserve bursts with life, and one of its most colourful residents is the Malachite Kingfisher. This tiny, vibrant bird stands out with its blue back and fiery orange chest. Perched along the reserve’s rivers and local water holes, the Malachite Kingfisher is a skilled hunter, diving with precision to snatch tiny fish, insects, and tadpoles. Spotting tips: - Look for them near the reserve’s rivers and dams, often perched on reeds or low-hanging branches. - Stay still and quiet; their small size and shy nature make patience key.
