The Eye of the Sahara. Known to locals as Guelb er Richat, scientists refer to it as the Richat Structure. This Eye is made up of eroded sedimentary and volcanic rock. The outer bands stretch as far as 40km (25mi). If you want to see it for yourself, you'll have to travel to Northwest Africa, to a town called Ouadane in the Adrar Region of Mauritania. Be aware, though, that this site has been deemed part of the top 100 geological heritage sites in the world by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). Trading the Karoo for the Winelands, Rebecca Ann Light embarked on her academic journey in Environmental Studies at Stellenbosch University in 2016. This was followed by an honours and masters degree, adding Geography to her resume. While completing her masters, Rebecca lectured the subject to education students at both Stellenbosch University and Sol Plaatje University. She has made two contributions to her field in the form of book chapters. The first stemming from her honours research in 2019 and the second from her masters research in 2023. Rebecca started her position as Project Coordinator for the CGA in 2022. She's focused on the Data CoOp project (https://lnkd.in/dS3MBbXA), aiming to benefit the pome and stone fruit industry in the Western Cape with a centralised geographic database. Both landscapes have their roles to play. Natural landscapes offer beauty, tranquility, and vital ecological functions, while man-made landscapes show human innovation and the ability to adapt our surroundings.
