[New Publication] Pretoria University Law Press (PULP) on 6 December 2024 launched its second of a series of commentaries on African human rights treaties, The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child: A Commentary. The launch coincided with the 25 year mark since the entry into force of the African Children’s Charter, on 29 November 1999. To date, 51 out of 55 African Union member states have ratified the African Children’s Charter, which demonstrates a growing commitment to respect, protect and promote the rights of children. On 21 November 2024, the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria, in collaboration with African Initiative of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRD Initiative) welcomed the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), Mary Lawlor and the Special Advisor to the UN Special Rapporteur on HRDs, Ed O'Donovan to the University Of Pretoria, Faculty of Law to a roundtable discussion to assess the status of HRDs in Africa. The theme was strengthening the protection of HRDs in Africa: challenges, strategies and collaborative pathways. The discussion examined the international and regional challenges to the protection of of HRDs, with a focus on the African context. The discussion also sought to strengthen the cooperation between the UN mechanisms and academic institutions, drawing on academic perspectives to support policy development and advocacy for the protection of HRDs in the region. The discussion welcomed representatives from the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation (IJR) Human Rights Watch Huruma Bantfu BeRelevant Afrika Southern Africa Youth Forum (SAYoF_SADC) Southern African Council of Non-Governmental Organisations (SAf-CNGO) and Centre for Applied Legal Studies, the Dean of the Faculty of Law Elsabe Schoeman, and staff and students of the Centre Elvis Fokala, Magnus Killander, Bonolo Makgale Tariro Sekeramayi Lakshita Kanhiya Tendai Shephard Mbanje Sabeeha Majid Henrietta [Enobong] M.
