The recent United States (US) elections have sparked debate over the potential impact on global economies. Our Chief Economist, Maarten Ackerman, and Chief Investment Officer, George Herman, shared their analysis with The Citizen News on how Trump's proposed 'America First' policies could influence both the US and the global economy. Maarten Ackerman anticipates “continued sticky inflation, a strengthening dollar, and strained global trade relations” stemming from protectionist measures. While George Herman cautions that Republican fiscal policies could lead to “the largest ever impact on the fiscal deficit of the US.” Discover more insights by reading the full article by Ina Opperman here: http://bit.ly/3Z8K4Ae #CitadelSA #BeyondRemarkable #USElection #GlobalEconomy #EconomicInsights

Don’t miss our Chief Economist, Maarten Ackerman, on the South Africa Tonight show with Francis Herd on eNCA this evening at 18:30. Maarten will unpack the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) data and share his expectations on the potential of an interest rate cut by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). He will also discuss the 2025 economic outlook for South Africa, considering the implications of United States (US) foreign policy under President-elect, Donald Trump. With the Monetary Policy Committee expected to announce a 25-basis point rate cut this Wednesday, our Chief Economist, Maarten Ackerman, highlights how this reflects the current economic reality and how inflation is well below the 4.5% midpoint of the target range and moving closer to 3% which creates a supportive environment for further rate cuts. Global factors remain critical to inflation. While the U.S. Federal Reserve has recently cut rates by 75 basis points, it’s unlikely that the South African Reserve Bank will follow suit with large cuts, as they prioritise maintaining a favourable interest rate to support the rand. #CitadelSA #BeyondRemarkable #SARB #InterestRates

Following the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) last week, our Chief Economist and Advisory Partner, Maarten Ackerman, shared his insights, noting that the budget was fair and transparent. He emphasized that substantial efforts are needed to address economic growth, rising debt, and the ongoing greylisting. Ackerman also highlighted infrastructure investment was a welcome move, as is the GNU’s phased local government debt relief plan.
