About us
Cape Town, or the Mother City, is South Africa’s oldest city, its second-most populous and the legislative capital. It is made up of a diverse population, a rich history, world-famous tourist attractions and an exciting calendar of international and local events. More than 231 councillors and 26 225 staff serve 4 million residents across a sprawling and cosmopolitan metro of 2 500 square kilometres. The City provides all the services normally associated with a full-service municipality, such as water, electricity, waste removal, sanitation, new infrastructure, roads, public spaces, facilities, housing developments, the upgrade of informal settlements and existing infrastructure, clinics and more. To meet the current and future needs of its residents, the City of Cape Town has formulated strategies and policies to guide development and growth. Central to these is the Integrated Development Plan (IDP), which is a five-year plan that informs the City’s policy and budget decisions. The City’s strong sense of community makes it one of the best places to live, work and raise a family. We offer rewarding career opportunities, great benefits and competitive salaries. New opportunities are posted at www.capetown.gov.za/careers.

This past Friday, 6 December 2024, the City hosted its Women in Leadership (WIL) Programme for the #SpatialPlanningandEnvironment Directorate as part of the #16DaysofActivism against Gender-Based Violence campaign at the Alphen Centre in Constantia. This year's theme, ‘Safe and Equal’, sought to empower women with knowledge on updated GBV legislation and practical self-defence skills. The Deputy Chief of Metro Police, Annalene Marais, made a presentation on GBV laws, and the Saartjie Baartman Shelter for Abused Women and Children showcased its facilities and what support services they offer. The Kolisi Foundation, Dr Mareli Fischer and Buzzer were also in attendance and provided brochures and tips to participants. The over 100 City staff members in attendance also participated in self-defence demonstrations led by the City’s Safety and Security Department. Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews, made an impassioned plea against gender based violence and encouraged attendees to report cases. #CTNews

The festive season is upon us and the City would like to advise residents of schedule changes to the MyCiTi bus service over this period. Passengers can again look forward to late-night shopping at the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk while Atlantis residents can enjoy a special service to the Silwerstroomstrand beach and resort on some weekends and public holidays. The buses will continue to operate from morning until evening, seven days a week with peak morning and afternoon services being less frequent from 17 December until 5 January 2025 to align with the lower demand over this period.
