Big conservation wins don’t happen in isolation—they require cross-border collaboration, local engagement, and science-driven action. The African Crane Conservation Programme (ACCP) in partnership with International Crane Foundation embodies this, earning the title of 2024 Programme of the Year. From carbon trading projects in South Africa to community-led wetland restoration in Uganda and climate-smart agriculture initiatives in Kenya and Rwanda, the ACCP is transforming landscapes while securing the future of African cranes. Their work spans multiple countries, engaging with farmers, governments, and conservationists to protect wetlands and the species that depend on them. A shining example of conservation at scale—this team is redefining what’s possible. 🚀👏 #ConservationSuccess #CraneConservation #HabitatProtection #ProtectWetlands #InternationalCraneFoundation

About us
Vision A healthy and equitable Africa that values and sustains the diversity of all life. Mission The Endangered Wildlife Trust is dedicated to conserving threatened species and ecosystems in Africa to the benefit of all life. Who we are The EWT is a leading, high-profile player in the arena of conservation. We identify the key factors threatening biodiversity and develop innovative methodologies and best practice guidelines to reduce these and promote harmonious co-existence and sustainable living for both people and wildlife. We achieve our goals through specialist programmes, and our skilled field staff are deployed regionally and throughout southern Africa. What we do Biodiversity conservation has moved from the fringes of social priorities into the centre of political discourse and socio-economic concern. People around the world can no longer ignore the fact that the environment in which we live underpins every single human need, demonstrated every day by both the losses of thousands of lives due to environmental disasters or the lack of access to quality natural resources, as well as by the dependence of millions of lives on their natural surroundings for their sustainability. As one of South Africa’s leading biodiversity conservation organisations, the EWT is striving to facilitate the protection and sustainable use of key ecosystems. The EWT has a cohesive and integrated approach to the conservation of species, habitats and ecosystem processes and we therefore focus much of our work on protecting both threatened species and habitats. Successful conservation thus means protecting the habitats that support species – and human beings – and in this way entire ecosystems, communities and socio-economic structures reap the benefits.

In collaboration with the KwaZulu-Natal Crane Foundation, we’re using drone technology to better understand the wetlands of the Bill Barnes Crane and Oribi Nature Reserve—a crucial breeding site for Wattled Cranes. Wetlands are ever-changing ecosystems, and what we see on the surface doesn’t always reveal the full picture. With the expertise of Dr Damian Walters, a wetland specialist, and advanced drone mapping, we’re developing smarter conservation strategies to support landowners in protecting crane habitats. This is just the beginning—watch this space as we refine new methods to monitor wetland changes and safeguard these incredible birds! #EWT #AfricanCranes #WetlandConservation #DronesForGood #TechForWildlife #SavingSpecies #WorldWetlandsDay

Behind every successful conservation initiative is someone who builds bridges—between people, ideas, and action. For EWT, that someone is Tammy Baker, our Donor Relations Officer and recipient of the 2024 Conservation Supporter of the Year award. Tammy's ability to foster genuine relationships with donors and colleagues alike has been instrumental in driving support for the EWT’s mission. Her dedication, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment ensure that conservation work gets the resources it needs to thrive. Tammy, your impact extends far beyond fundraising—you're a catalyst for change. 🌿💚 #ConservationLeadership #MakingADifference #EWT #TheEWT

Conservation is not for the faint-hearted—it requires persistence, vision, and an unwavering commitment to nature. John Davies and Danielle du Toit have exemplified just that, earning the title of 2024 Conservation Achievers of the Year. 🔹 John, through his leadership in raptor conservation, has driven strategic engagement, uniting stakeholders towards a shared vision for the Lowveld. His work in expanding the Eye-in-the-Sky initiative and strengthening Birds of Prey Programme impact is remarkable. 🔹 Danielle has been a force for vulture conservation, overcoming challenges in Vulture Safe Zones, engaging with landowners, and spearheading environmental education in Lesotho. Her work in lead-free ammunition drives and predator management workshops has strengthened conservation efforts across regions. Both of these conservationists are proof that dedication and innovation go hand in hand. Their work doesn’t just protect species—it inspires action. 👏 #WildlifeConservation #Raptors #Vultures #ConservationImpact #TheEWT

🦋 A first for South African butterfly conservation! The Critically Endangered Wolkberg Zulu butterfly is now legally protected thanks to a first-of-its-kind conservation servitude. This milestone was made possible by landowner Gustav van Veijeren, in collaboration with the Lepidopterists’ Society of Africa (LSA), the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT), and Rand Merchant Bank. This tiny butterfly—just 26mm across—has survived in only two locations for decades. Now, its critically endangered Woodbush Granite Grassland habitat is secured for the future. A huge step for conservation in South Africa! #ConservationMilestone #ProtectButterflies #ReverseTheRed #EndangeredWildlifeTrust

South Africa is home to 13 unique tortoise species, but numbers of three Endangered species are alarmingly declining. To tackle this, the EWT Drylands Conservation Programme, in partnership with the Turtle Conservancy, has launched conservation projects to locate and protect these elusive reptiles. 🐢🐕 Enter Delta and Dash, our scent detection Border Collies. Trained to sniff out tortoises, these clever canines help our team locate hidden tortoises faster, enabling critical data collection for mapping and monitoring populations. Thanks to Turtle Conservancy, Dwarf Tortoise Conservation, Rainforest Trust, IUCN NL, and Ford Wildlife Foundation for making this work possible. Want to learn more about the incredible role of scent-detection dogs in wildlife conservation? Join us at the first African Canines in Conservation Conference in Midrand on 18–19 March 2025. 🐕✨ Register now. https://lnkd.in/df3bMpCa

This Valentine's Day meets #WorldPangolinDay —a perfect reminder that true love means protecting what we cherish. Pangolins, nature’s armored guardians, play a crucial role in keeping our ecosystems balanced. Yet in South Africa, a hidden threat looms large: electrified fences are killing around 2,000 pangolins each year—20 times more than those lost to poaching (<100 annually). Join us along with our partners IUCN SSC Pangolin Specialist Group in creating safer wildlife corridors and advocating for better conservation measures.
