The Ministry of Electricity and Energy has announced the list of bids received for Bid Window 3 of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). 33 bids were received from 28 companies. Preferred bidders will be announced by the end of February 2025. The contribution of renewable energy to the national grid is likely to increase to between 30 - 40% by 2035 meaning South Africa will need an expanded and flexible storage network to make sure this energy is available to be dispatched when needed. In total, approximately 13GW of storage will be needed by that time. https://lnkd.in/dAhG8y-Z

The Energy Council welcomes the call from Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy, Samantha Graham-Maré, to cut red tape in the renewable energy sector. Removing obstacles will help to improve efficiency and lower the cost of renewable generation but must be balanced with sufficient new dispatchable power generation, and a sustainable Eskom, which are also critical to an overall balanced and reliable system. https://lnkd.in/dNRzx_QP James Mackay

Congratulations to our members Mulilo, TotalEnergies, Sasol and Air Liquide on these fantastic projects! Jan Jurie Fourie Stuart MacWilliam Bertrand Bouvet Sunil Gandhi
We are pleased to announce the successful achievement of Financial Close on 260 MW of private power purchase agreements (PPAs) with two prominent corporate clients. In partnership with TotalEnergies, Mulilo was selected as the preferred bidder for a dual-project renewable energy initiative. The projects include: · De Aar 2 South – 140 MW wind farm (155 MWac installed) and · Paarde Valley PV2 – 120 MW solar PV plant (142.6 MWdc installed) Both projects are being developed for Sasol and Air Liquide, and will be located in the resource-rich region of De Aar in the Northern Cape. The design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance of these projects will be jointly managed by Mulilo and TotalEnergies, with construction having commenced in early November 2024. This achievement undoubtedly strengthens our position as a leader in South Africa’s renewable energy sector and reaffirms our commitment to providing innovative energy solutions. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to our equity partners, TotalEnergies and Reatile Group (Pty) Limited, for their collaboration and unwavering support in making this project a reality. #RenewableEnergy #Wind #Solar #Mulilo

The Energy Council estimates that more than R2-trillion of investment is required over the next ten years on new generation, transmission and distribution, with the majority of this funding coming from the private sector. South Africa is going to have to compete globally for this funding and will need to bolster its position if it wants to be more competitive in this regard. Read more about this and what our CEO James Mackay had to say at the recent Energy Intensive Users Group convention. https://lnkd.in/dtK2aE8r
