Drone Surveys for Tailings Storage Facilities, Water Assets & Geological Exploration

Drone Topography: Assessing Mine Waste Dumps for Planning Rehabilitation Projects Rehabilitation is the process of restoring the land and environment affected by mining activities- including the flattening of dumps, covering of tailings dams with waste rock and other processes necessary to stabilize the site. FieldServe was recently tasked with conducting a drone based topographic survey for a mine rehabilitation project. The goal was to gather high-resolution data to help rehabilitation specialists plan and execute the next steps in restoring the site to a safe and stable state usable for future purposes. From the survey we provided the data necessary for assessing: 1️⃣ Waste Dump Volumes 2️⃣ Areas that need reshaping and leveling 3️⃣ Requirement of drainage interventions What made this survey especially valuable was the timing- we conducted it moments after rainfall had stopped. This provided the client with the opportunity to identify areas prone to water pooling and erosion- plus, soft light conditions allow us to provide a high quality orthophoto. Post rain surveys? 100% recommend ‼️ As a mine rehabilitation consultant, the success of any rehabilitation project depends on the quality and accuracy of the data you work with (among other things of course) By using drone technology, we provided valuable topographic data that will help guide rehabilitation planning, ensuring targeted and effective interventions. If you're working on a mine rehabilitation project and need accurate, real-time topographic data, let's connect and discuss how our drone surveys can optimize your rehabilitation planning.

Drone Surveys for Tailings Storage Facilities, Water Assets & Geological Exploration

Did you know that the Gauteng Province is home to some of the largest and oldest tailings dumps, many of which are abandoned and radioactive? These tailings dumps are remnants of historical mining operations that were left unmanaged after mining stopped. The risks associated with these dumps include: 1️⃣ Radiation Exposure 2️⃣ Dust Pollution 3️⃣ Water & Groundwater Contamination The Gauteng City- Region observatory ( 📸) shows that areas like Johannesburg, Benoni, Springs, and Krugersdorp are particularly affected. BUT HOW DO WE ADDRESS THESE ISSUES? Well, many of these tailings still contain residual gold and other valuable minerals, offering the potential for re-mining. However ‼️ Re-mining isn't an approach to be taken lightly. Before any re-mining, pre-feasibility studies are crucial. These studies require accurate and comprehensive data to assess the site's physical condition before any ground work. Entering closed or abandoned mines for ground surveys and sampling can be extremely dangers due to: ⚠️ Structural Instability ⚠️ Toxic Exposure ⚠️ Access challenges But this is where FieldServe comes in. By using a combined approach of drone and satellite technology, we are able to provide a comprehensive view of Mine waste facilities, enabling more informed decision-making for re-mining projects. Using optical and radar satellite data, we can provide a historical analysis, revealing surface changes, environmental impacts, and tracking geotechnical stability using InSAR. We then use drones for near real-time data, using LiDAR or Photogrammetry to generate 3D models and measure the volumes of these mine waste piles. Our remotely acquired data helps geotechnical engineers, tailings professionals, investors and environmental consultants assess the potential of re-mining projects with limited (if any) need for site access. What do you think is the best way to address Gauteng's mine waste challenges? Let's have a conversation and explore how our remote data solutions can help inform the feasibility of potential re-mining projects.

Drones and Methane Detection: A Groundbreaking Solution for Landfill Gas Detection As organic waste decomposes in landfills, it generates methane, a potent greenhouse gas. 🌎 🌏 Addressing methane emissions from landfills is crucial for mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable waste management practices. Landfills traditionally use manual inspections with handheld detectors and permanent gas monitoring systems like gas probes or wells to detect methane leaks. These methods, while valuable, can be labor-intensive, time-consuming, and may not offer real-time or full coverage of the entire landfill area, plus, no one should be walking on a landfill if it can be avoided. FieldServe is proud to be the South African supplier of the Laser Falcon methane detection solution from SPH Engineering. As opposed to having your team take days walking on hazardous landfills, our drone solution is easily deployable and can cover the entire landfill in a matter of minutes or a few hours, optimizing your gas detection operations.

Landfill Leachate Dams: Preventing Uncontrolled Discharges of Polluted Water through Drone Bathymetry A leachate dam is a specially designed structure that collects and holds liquid waste that seeps out from a landfill. ☣️☣️This liquid , called leachate, can contain harmful substances and it is the duty of landfill operators to maintain enough storage capacity to ensure dam integrity and prevent uncontrolled discharges. 1 critical factor in the prevention of uncontrolled discharge is the management of dam capacity which requires bathymetric surveys- measuring water depth, volume, and sediment buildup within leachate dams. Traditional methods of collecting bathymetric data often rely on manual sampling and sonar equipment deployed from boats. Some of the challenges with these traditional methods include: 🔴 Access limitations after heavy rain 🔴 Safety risks to personnel 🔴 Time consuming and labour intensive Plus the smell is nothing to write home about. 💡 At FieldServe , we provide drone based bathymetric surveys for the proactive monitoring of leachate dams. The result? A clearer, safer picture of the dam's health. ALL WITHOUT PUTTING PERSONNEL AT RISK. SPH Engineering 's drone bathymetry system ( 📸)offers a safer, more efficient solution , providing accurate data on water depth, volume, and sediment buildup without the challenges of traditional methods. As we explore the role of drones in monitoring leachate dams, it is clear that this innovation can greatly enhance landfill management practices. If you are in charge of landfill operations and looking to optimize your data acquisition processes, let's have a discussion about how our drone surveys for landfill management can help.
