  • Are you a young leader or woman passionate about political leadership and public service in East Africa? 📢 We’re calling on nationals of #Burundi #DRC #Ethiopia #Kenya #Rwanda #Somalia #SouthSudan #Sudan #Tanzania #Uganda to be part of a new generation of ethical, impactful leaders. Despite making up over 70% of East Africa’s population, youth hold just 2% of parliamentary seats. Many aspiring leaders face a critical knowledge gap in governance, servant leadership, and policy-making, skills essential for driving meaningful change. The Futurelect East Africa Public Leadership Programme is bridging this gap by equipping young, aspiring, and established political and civic leaders with the tools they need to lead effectively. If you’re preparing for elected office or a political appointment in public service, this is your opportunity to join our second cohort. Selected fellows will participate in seven intensive in-residence seminar weekends, gaining knowledge and insights from leading political practitioners. They will also become part of a growing network of ethical leaders across Africa. 📌 Apply now: bit.ly/AfricanLeader #Futurelect #FuturelectEA #EthicalLeadership #EastAfrica #LeadershipFellowship

  • 📢 We had the honour of welcoming back Siphiwe Phoya Mchenga, a 2023 alumna of the Futurelect Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme, at The State of Your Nation seminar for the 2024/5 cohort. A human rights lawyer and legislative expert, Siphiwe has over seven years of experience in law reform, advocacy, and civic education in Malawi. As a Certified Legislative Draftsperson and practising lawyer, she has dedicated her career to strengthening governance and protecting vulnerable groups. It was inspiring to have her share her expertise and leadership with the next generation of public leaders. Thank you, Siphiwe, for your continued commitment to shaping governance! A special thank you to Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung South Africa for hosting us for the seminar weekend and providing a space for meaningful dialogue and learning. #Futurelect #PublicLeadership #Governance

Some of what I heard and read during the latest Futurelect #SouthernAfricaPublicLeadershipDevelopmentProgramme reminded me of the declaration below, made in 2013 by the then, Australian Army Chief David Morrison. One Futurelect speaker from the legal fraternity spoke about losing her father at a young age, and her mom subsequently being dispossessed of her property, including land, because she no longer had a husband. This experience and how it shaped the speaker's early life drove her to the point where she asked, "What does...society need to be a better place?" Part of her answer was to qualify as a lawyer and contribute to the fight against online violence against women and girls. Her example is one of a person who uses their trauma to become stronger, wiser, and 'turn the tables on the enemy'. From a display at the #ApartheidMuseum, South Africa: "Good moral character is not something...we can achieve on our own. We need a culture that supports the conditions under which self-love and friendship flourish." Are you a leader who works to shape the culture around you so that #humandignity is defended and advanced? *This post does not necessarily reflect the views of Futurelect or any of its program fellows. * I am not affiliated with, or a member of, any political party.

  • The second seminar of the Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme is underway! Yesterday, our fellows arrived in Johannesburg and kicked off the weekend with engaging sessions on political systems and leadership development. A key highlight from Day One was an insightful session led by Dr. Khwezi Mabasa, Economic and Social Policy Lead at Friedrich Ebert Stiftung South Africa. With his extensive background in political economy, social policy, and trade union activism, Dr. Mabasa provided valuable perspectives on governance and policy-making in the region. Stay tuned as we continue to explore governance, policy, and the realities of public leadership! #Futurelect #LeadershipInAction #SouthernAfrica #PublicLeadership

Plugging you with a weekend read. 📖 Six countries. Eighteen powerful stories. We often have many stories to tell when asked what inspires us to lead. But there is always one that sets us on the path. The Futurelect East Africa Public Leadership Programme fellows shared what motivated them to enter public and political service. Their narratives ranged from advocating for quality, affordable healthcare to creating space for meaningful women's participation. The need for better livelihoods and the fight for respect for human rights in conflict-ridden regions drove others. These are their stories. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gy4a3rVu. Budgets are not just numbers; they shape the future of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social services. At Futurelect, we empower citizens with the knowledge to engage meaningfully in democratic processes. Our civic education programme breaks down complex topics like government spending, equipping young people with the tools to hold leaders accountable and advocate for better policies.
