A beautiful and hardy shrub or small tree, Grewia occidentalis, or Crossberry, is a common sight in the Greater Kromme area. Its delicate mauve flowers with bright yellow stamens attract pollinators, while its unique four-lobed fruit, shaped like a cross, provides food for birds and wildlife. As a widespread indigenous plant, the Crossberry plays an important role in supporting local biodiversity. Have you spotted one in your area? 🌸🦜 #GreaterKrommeStewardship #IndigenousPlants #Biodiversity #Crossberry #WaterWiseGardening
Greater Kromme Stewardship
Environmental Services
Conserving threatened biodiversity and ecosystems in the greater Kouga-Koukamma area.
About us
The Greater Kromme Stewardship initiative is a conservation project near St. Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape. It is named for the Kromme River, a watery lifeline that sustains the plants, animals and people that live in the area. The Greater Kromme area is home to many threatened species and ecosystems, some of which are not found anywhere else. The initiative brings together wind farms, conservationists, farmers and government, who share a goal to protect the natural environment. These partners are using an approach called Biodiversity Stewardship. This is an exciting new legal process that can declare nature reserves on private land. It can be for a whole property, or just an environmentally important part of a property.

The Kromme River is more than just a river—it’s part of life in St Francis. It has flowed from the Langkloof mountains to the sea for thousands of years, shaping the land and supporting people, animals, and plants. But in recent decades, human activity has changed the river so much that it no longer functions as a proper estuary. With too little freshwater reaching the mouth, the Kromme is now officially a “sea extension”, which has had a big impact on the fish, birds, and plants that depend on it. We all have a role to play in protecting this special river. Let’s look after what we have and do what we can to help nature thrive. 🌱🐟 #SaveTheKromme #KrommeRiver #ProtectNature #GreaterKrommeStewardship

Wentzel and Sibu, our conservation team on the ground, recently attended a meeting with the landowners within the Oubos-Grootrivier Nature Reserve. When a reserve is officially declared, it is crucial to keep supporting the landowners, to discuss what they have done to manage the land, challenges of the past year and determine a plan for the year ahead. Good communication and ongoing assistance are key to looking after the land and its wildlife. By working together, we can protect our beautiful natural areas and make sure they stay healthy for the future. 🌱💚 #StewardshipInAction #ProtectOurLand #GreaterKromme #OubosNatureReserve #NatureConservation #EnvironmentalConservation #SustainableLiving #ProtectOurPlanet #LocalBiodiversity #CommunityEngagement #environment #Biodiversity

Our team recently spent time at Rebels Nature Reserve, nestled between Rebelsrus Private Nature Reserve and Mostersthoek Nature Reserve. We had some great conversations with the landowners about formally declaring the property a nature reserve and are currently working on a Protected Area Management Plan for this incredible landscape. From the pristine St Francis Strandveld and Tsitsikamma Littoral vegetation to the diverse dune wetlands and seasonal pools, the area is teeming with birdlife, wildlife, and even some marine species. Adding to its charm, the land holds fascinating archaeological significance, with shell middens and cultural sites scattered across the terrain. With breathtaking ocean views and rich biodiversity, the landowners are passionate about preserving this special place for future generations. 🌊🐚🦜 #GreaterKrommeStewardship #ConservationInAction #ProtectingNature #CapeStFrancis #NatureConservation #EnvironmentalConservation #SustainableLiving #ProtectOurPlanet #LocalBiodiversity #CommunityEngagement #environment #Biodiversity

The Metalasia Muricata, commonly known as Blombos, is more than just a hardy coastal shrub – it's a vital part of our ecosystem 🌾💚 Why is Blombos important? ✔️ Soil Stabilization – Its deep roots help prevent coastal erosion. ✔️ Pollinator Paradise – Its small, daisy-like flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. 🐝🦋 ✔️ Wildlife Shelter – Provides cover and nesting spots for birds and small creatures. ✔️ Drought-Resistant – Thrives in poor, sandy soils, making it a key plant in water-scarce environments. At Greater Kromme Stewardship, we recognize the importance of indigenous flora like Blombos in maintaining biodiversity and protecting our natural landscapes. 🌿💙 #Blombos #MetalasiaMuricata #IndigenousPlants #EcosystemHeroes #GreaterKrommeStewardship #ConservationMatters #CapeStFrancis #NatureConservation #EnvironmentalConservation #SustainableLiving #ProtectOurPlanet #LocalBiodiversity #CommunityEngagement #environment #Biodiversity
